I’d be happy as hell to run a store in Antarctica! Pretty much the safest place on earth! This is a cool video. Very cozy feeling…. Like general store meets gigantic continent in the middle of nowhere! Love it!
Subscribed! PLEASE post more videos on daily life in McMurdo, the pub, the food, the weather, everything! I've been looking for jobs there myself for the experience of a lifetime.
I kinda always wondered how all this works... Never would have expected that they would even have alcohol there honestly. Figured it was a "dry" camp. Can people make special requests to order things they may want such as like for example, I dont smoke but I chew copenhagen. Could someone order in like a case of chewing tobacco if they wanted it? Neat video tho.
No way - it's awesome that you stock Founders Brewing Breakfast Stout from Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. My home town! P.S. I've always wanted to live in Antarctica. Keep up the great work.
Is it less common outside of Michigan? Makes me wonder if there are a few Michiganders out at McMurdo or whether the Americans in general are just fond of it. I've never tried it, it looks quite hard to find in my country (Australia), which makes it quite amusing that it's easier to find in Antarctica.
Hi. I guess they spend cash there. I used to do Wheresgeorge. A lot. People tell you where your bills go. One of my dollars made its way to McMurdo Station. From the puget sound. It was a few years ago. Thanks for showing me the place. Peace. Out.
So I was thinking of sending CDs of my podcasts about classic TV shows to Antarctica. Do you think that is something that would be well received? What would be the best way to go about doing this?
I've thought about doing an Antarctica trip off and on; any word on how much a person should have saved? I've heard in most cases you have to have a job or some functional role down there to qualify to go.
U.S. Marshalls. www.usmarshals.gov/who-we-are/history/historical-reading-room/us-marshals-make-legal-presence-antarctica And of course they can always just push you out the door to "chill out"...
Nice video. How do you handle shoplifters, or for people that steal a lot, those committing grand theft? Do you call the McMurdo Police, have them hog-tie the offenders, throw them in the back of the cop car, then take them to McMurdo Prison? Do they keep the hard-core criminals separate from the petty thieves in the prison, to try to prevent prison riots? ;)
You can recieve packages at McMurdo, but they do need to be sent well before winter to ensure they will arrive before the station closes for winter. Plus it depends on how big the package is. If it was a good sized cuddly toy I would think that you might be able to vacuum seal it, it's easier to send smaller parcel packages than boxes because whilst the C-17 planes do carry personal packages scientific equipment takes priority, of course, so a package may wait some time before there is room in a plane to take it. So the smaller and lighter a package is the more likely it will be able to find a place on a plane to arrive more quickly. I don't think I would let myself forget a cuddly toy, I couldn't leave myself without one. Especially because even though McMurdo is amazing in the dark winter I'd probably be thinking about The Thing.
@@TheJoyfulTravelista Ok. I know the kiwis up the road buy things, I guess there would be an exchange office for them. I know McMurdo is in the Ross Dependency, NZ territory. I even know about Air New Zealand plane crash that occurred in the 80s (Mount Erebus disaster). So I expect NZ to have some influence on McMurdo.
So none of this is real. Its all made up. The earth is flat and Antarctica is really a giant army base under the ice, which is artificial. Also there’s a huge ice wall that cannot be gone around, over, or thru. Yes…..I’m being sarcastic towards flatbearthers 😂
I would definitely hire a graffiti artist to come down and put some serious color and murals on those painted walls...my god what a horrible color. I would lose my mind if I had to look at those walls every single day. That's a quality of life issue if I ever seen one. Maybe hold a contest when the next crew comes on see if you have any talented budding artists that want to take a crack at it. @ least put up some posters...because right now you have a picture of a volcano and an iceberg right behind you @ the end of the video, an iceberg really?, you don't see enough of them do you?/s
I was the retail supervisor at McMurdo from 2008-2012! Fun to see how it has (and hasn't) changed!

Safest? Someone was murdered there with no resolution

Watching this from Germany with no clue why this was suggested but I‘m quite happy with this. Interesting and lovely, thank you 😅
You are a ROCKSTAR! So much admiration for your work. Hello from Chattanooga, TN!!!
I got an email back today about my application and so far I'm moving forward in the process!! Fingers crossed that I'll be down next summer.
Good luck! I've always wanted to go one day myself
@@LaughingindaMirror Same! Hope we all get to go :)
You have an amazing vibe.

Looks like a fun job!
Thank you for the tour.
This was great! Thanks for sharing.
This was a fun video! Have you done an overwinter or could talk more about what differences (if any) the store goes through for the winter season?

How much is a ration of alcohol?
I did enjoy the tour! Thank you for doing the video and giving us a glimpse of down there😊
Short sleeve shirts, that surprised me!
Inside the buildings can get quite warm. Plus, people buy them as souvenirs for people back home. :)
@@TheJoyfulTravelista interesting, really enjoyed the video, thank you!
Great tour presentation... At 5:34 they finally mention "potato chips" Ahhh... that would be one of the first things I'd look for...
Hellloooo 😂
Random vid on my feed but loved it.

You got a boatload of PBR I see!!! Good call.
How much does cigarettes and alcohol cost at mcmurdo?
Cigarettes are 9 dollars a pack. It’s in one of her TH-cam shorts.
Wow less than 1 pack here in Texas for my Capris@@diesel7903

Wow I'd love to be able to buy a baseball hat!
The fact that Antarctica has no insects blew my mind :O
I don't know why this video was recommended to me but now I have so many questions. How does one end up working retail at McMurdo??
They got rid of the local bar. Yikes! I guess no more video rental section at the store.
Bars still exist - they're now BYOB. All DVDs are in dorm lounges that people can borrow whenever.

Pls tell me you have full fat original coca cola too ...greeat video too ..your a natural ❤😊
I noticed the prices are surprisingly inexpensive . it’s much more expensive in every state 😮
5:14 is there law enforcement or behavior enforcement just in case someone gets a little heavy on the wobble pop

I’m wondering how much more long it is until you guys get pretty much unlimited items.
Why do you need a fridge in Antarctica?
How do people who forget their cuddly toys get through polar wintery without you selling such?!

Ya !
ב''ה, how much for a passport?
How does one apply for a support job down there?
No bug spray???
Is there an espresso machine in the cafeteria?
not in the cafeteria, there is a whole other lounge/hang out building called the coffee house that is where the espresso maker lives.
rationing doesn't make sense. just order more if you know it will be in demand
Wait, wait, wait, you keep the alcohol stocked but ration the candy ? Not the candy 😢😢😢
I didn't see condoms..
I was thinking the same thing. 😂
those are free at the medical building across the street from this building
C😊ndoms?
Where is the Real Food?
What currency is used for the store? US, NZ, Aus or Euro?
US dollars since it's run by the US Antarctica Program.
