  • Jeff is joined today by organized crime journalist Scott Burnstein as they delve into the life of Philadelphia mobster Joey Merlino. "Skinny Joey" was mob royalty growing up around the life, making a play to take it over and ultimately living a very colorful life filled with time in prison for his involvement in the Mafia, run-ins with celebrities and even a photo with Donald Trump.

The Philly Mob is such a close knit group. Many of the high ranking guys in the Philly Family have known each other since childhood. They have an emotional attachment to each other which lowers the risk of informants. Much like how the Detroit Partnership has many members that are related thru blood or marriage.

The Philly mob was always a huge mess. Joey was one of the better ones who had some class. Look at all the in fighting and clashes with each other? You even had two brothers killing each other. Disgusting lifestyle. Philadelphia is horrible , yes they are very tough but play dirty and trashy. Ralph Natale was horrible, stanfa horrible, scarfo very snakey, all of them were terrible people. Joey was different in the way he had a plan and made a name for himself..other than that it was just one big waste. Nothing really accomplished other than regular business deals and cash grabs. Nothing to be impressed with

Wow, my Skinny Joey update turns into a deep dive, thanks Jeff. Guys like Joey never really leave the life especially in Philadelphia where the dynamics of South Philly are completely different than NYC where families are climbing all over each other creating daily drama. You can be a player long term if you keep a low profile. Solid, very informative show.

You had brothers trying to kill each other. Yes it's a dramatic tale, but it was a trashy evil tale. Nothing to memorialize or be impressed with. Only one that made a change was joey. After Sammy and Phillip became federal informants there was a vacuum in Philly there was no one giving orders anymore. Joey showed he was The only one willing to take the rains. Made a ballsy move by clipping Nicky's sons wings. That alone got him respect from the other family. Nicky's son had to be put under the protection of one of the families just to keep him from being killed. A sit down later Joey got The nod and he became The acting boss of Philly.

MY main pet peave is he Never does anything for the people of Philadelphia unless it benefits him. since he's been a teenager, he skimmed off the top of the money he was supposed to be delivering to the higher mafioso, and always denied it!! He would probably charge Jeff for an interview and want a contract on it. Not a favorite of mine, sorry if you are.

Actually... Joey is very smart aligning himself with these people. Makes his image look good. Plus it's harder to get stuff on a guy who is so involved in the community and involved with politicians and sports stars and judges. Etc. Etc

Jeff, have you or any of your associates ever heard of theDonald being in a real fight of any kind? He must have had some kind of street rep from growing up in queens even if it was little lord Fauntleroy. I'm trying to figure out where his "tough guy" label comes from. Beating up his wives doesn't count.

Jeff, can we get a show on mobsters who have had their hands or family in with in college or pro level athleticism like Nick & Joey Bosa from Ohio State who were related to Carmine Persico.
I think this would be an interesting one considering the sitdown is parterned with Barstool
