He doesn't feel a lawyer can accurately represent him. However, he is incapable of defending himself and doesn't see that. He's walking right into a guilty verdict; and then will blame the system. The system is not created for you to represent yourself, that's why we have laws guaranteeing you an attorney. No layperson understand this, or could learn to. It takes literal years to understand this.

I think the difference is that this defendant seems smart and can clearly argue a (hilariously wrong) point while being respectful to the court. He should be able to realize how lost he is and Simpson is trying to make him use this brain of his and realize that simple fact. Despite being annoying and terribly wrong most sov cits are at rock bottom, vulnerable and intellectually out of their depths. They still lose of course but a good judge is allowed to try to see through their bullshit words and judge the case on its merits. This guy on the other hand should be smart enough to get a lawyer. He tried withing the law to get this dude to lawyer up. The court can't MAKE you use a public defender, only hint at it. The judge knows how much of a pain in the ass trying this guy is going to be if he represents himself. That's why he keeps asking him if he wants an attorney.
