  • I was asked how I did this style, so here's a tutorial! It's very comfortable and you can do this both with longer and shorter hair!
Frida got the hairstyle from the El Istmo De Tehuantepec, part of Mexico. The style is an indigenous hairstyle, although it's been used by different people all around the world.

My favourite hairstyle! The scarf makes me feel like I have more hair. I've also used the same method to braid some false hair into my own - bought a big hank of it online. Sometimes I use little claw clips to secure the braids, too.

Yes I know about and that they're from India 🙂 They're also appreciated amongst some of us long hairs internationally and we have an entire thread for them on long hair community 🙂 But most of us makes a more simple version of them, rather than the elaborate and beautiful ones that you have.

This is cultural appropriation. Frida Kahlo's braids are really a Mexican Indigenous braid style that is use throughout Mexico by Indigenous women. Frida Kahlo used that hairstyle because she honored her Indigenous roots. Anybody who wants to wear braids like this should show respect and be knowledgeable about the history of this type of braid. Taking or copying from another culture without any connection, respect and acknowledgment of that culture is appropriation.

This style of braiding has been done across many cultures. Im Slavic and we have had this style for a long time. It isn't exclusive to one culture.

This hairstyle (both just as it is or in variations) was also used by medieval and renaissance woman in Europe. It comes from times where hairties were not a thing yet. The purpose of the ribbon or scarf was to make the hair look more voluminous (something that was considered a beaty standard) as well as getting really long hair out of the way for daily work chores. In my country, Austria, this kind of hairstyle is considerered a traditional hairstyle as well (crown braid for everyday tasks, loose braids for church to impress the guys by showing off ones hair; back in the old days). Surely enough, mexian women are using this hairstyle too, so do many women in slavic countries or other places around the world. But that doesn't mean that one culture has ownership over something as basic as this...it's like saying the basic ponytail belongs to one culture alone and no one else may wear it.

In mamy slavic countries this hairstyle was very popular. In Poland it was usually weared with ribbons not scarfs, but it is almost the same. It is easy to do, so many people would wear it to work in the field. Also slavic people used to believe that hair was very important and magical, so women used to have very long hair and this was one of the few hairstyles they can do to keep their hair out of the way while working.
