We used a food delivery service ONCE during the pandemic. I had such sticker shock it was the only time. Like you said Jim, I’m healthy, I can drive, I’ll go pick it up myself.
That’s exactly what you should do. If you had a broken foot and you were on crutches, you can pay $20 for someone to deliver you a $25 food order. If you can drive, you don’t need it. You don’t hire a limo to bring you to the mall or a movie theater, do you? 😁
I don’t watch your videos to get ideas on what to use in my kitchen, I have all the tools…pots, pans and tools I need. If I stumble on a video that is hawking specific items, I’m going to stop watching. I watch to get recipes, ideas and many times your recipes bring back memories of my mom cooking!
Absolutely one of your best yet. I have so many comments I could make regarding delivery services which I can't stand and try never to use, but also about the pastries you discussed. I'll just say that I'm not a fan of sfogiadel', just not my thing, but I judge any Italian bakery by their cannoli.....they're either great or they're not getting my custom a second time. And that green on the cannoli' was never sprinkles, it was ground pistachios, and they were great back in the day. Hard to find good ones today. To each their own, but it's not hard to create and serve good food (yes, it is demanding work), and I wish that were more respected than it is these days. Glad you guys do this podcast/video thing, and I share it for all who will get it.
I would miss the both of you’s guys!!! I am disabled so I rely heavily on grocery/ restaurant delivery services. Yeah I know that they jack up the prices but I haven’t driven since 2016. What ya gonna do? Thanks again for all of the Great Content!!! - Nick Giardiello
The creators whose content you consume regularly become important to you because you like them. You want them to succeed and support their family, as long as it aligns with who they are.
I have no idea why people are willing to hand over so much money on delivery and up-charged items just so they don’t have to go get their own food. My grandkids (20 & 24) do it and it drives me crazy! You have a vehicle, you’re perfectly healthy, and will sit around doing nothing waiting for their order. Good Lord! Go get your food! When I was a kid (long ago), I was the delivery method. On the occasional time my mom didn’t cook, I’d go get us pizza or Chinese. The restaurants didn’t even have their own delivery service. Delivery was ME! I also would go by the Deli and pick up soda for the event. lol And if I was lucky, I’d get a quarter 😂
Tara: Your time shouldn’t just involve dollar value. It should also should involve quality time.” Tara is a very articulate communicator and is very astute.
I’ve never ordered delivery in my life. I think part of me is afraid of getting instantly addicted to the convenience… because in other areas of my life, I very much WILL pay extra for convenience.
When I was a general manager of a Blaze Pizza or Executive Chef at Rize Pizza I HATED these services. Once that driver took the food I had no idea what happens to it on the way there and unlike having my own driver, these drivers are just gone so I cant write them up or w.e if they screw up the food. I had one driver come in and grab a pizza, I saw them take the pizza and put it in the bag on its side... Guarantee that food was ruined.
The delivery services have also affected the grocery store, the other week I was waiting at the deli with about 6 other customers when we realized not one of us was being waited on the clerks were all waiting on the insta-cart orders. I feel like the customers in the store are more likely to spend more money on impulse buys. I like that you don't try to sell us stuff.
Never have had food delivered in my life. Age 67. Didn’t own a car when I was younger and still did not get food delivered. I hate cold food . As well, food safety issues are a concern regarding cleanliness and food in a car for an hour perhaps. How is it stored? It is a convenience and necessity for some. Made it this far without using. Don’t intend to start now. Plus I like cooking and spending money I save on cooking my own food on other things that interest me.
This happens to people in general regardless of a specific online ordering or the company's mobile app. I've seen where are all these people at Starbucks order these drinks and just leisurely come in whenever and many times are taking priority over walkin customers. Is slows down the entire when some people are there waiting for a drink but the ticket machine only puts out so many tickets at a time
I agree with you Jim. These companies have ruined the dining out experience. Since the pandemic, the cost of dining out has increased exponentially. Couple that with the fees these companies put on top of a meal, and they have totally ruined the experience.
I don’t watch many cooking channels but I don’t like channels that push stuff all the time. I would, however, trust anything you recommend because I trust you two.
Jim and Tara....two things. First, make it at home whenever possible. Second, quality has a shelf life1. Depending upon the food, sometimes the food begins to decline in quality in minutes from when it leaves the restaurant kitchen...steak...5-10 minutes, fish...forget about it..pizza or Chinese probably 15-30 miniutes. Don't treat food as just fuel. As the world gets more and more insane, your food experience can make your day.
From a restaurant perspective, it’s not that the services directly tell you how to price your food, it’s that they charge a 15-30% commission to the restaurant to be on the service. That means they increase the price of the menu items in order to offset that fee. The restaurant doesn’t necessarily have to do that, but most run on pretty narrow margins aside from alcohol sales. You don’t want to break even or lose money just to put out more orders. Speaking as somebody that used to run to-go at a local pub….that no longer is on these platforms.
Great discussion on food services, I never ordered delivery in my life, I'm 75, and I enjoy going out for pick-up or having a cold beer waiting for my pizza, or just enjoying the atmosphere of the restaurant watching how they do things, I always leave a tip, even for take out.
My biggest issue is the quality of the food when delivered. It isn’t near as good as when you dine in. When you couldn’t go in during Covid it was worth it and a way to support our favorite restaurants. The only time I order now is when we have a work lunch (at home) where we have a video meeting and eat lunch all together. Work gives us a free lunch once a month to be social together.
I tried the corporate world before marriage and children, so I had already decided to take less money for more of my own time when I married. I still put time into my job, WAY more than 40 hours, but we chose to live in a MUCH smaller town and I had basically a 10 minute commute. After children, I was able to still attend their events and award ceremonies and take to lessons and doctors' appointments because I had made those decisions. Still had mommy guilt but it was lesser for me. Having a profession, I too put a dollar figure on my time, so I can calculate opportunity costs for the delivery thing. We used it heavily during COVID times, but it was just starting in my local area at that point and the fees weren't so bad. NOW, of course, the fees are awful, and I refuse to pay them. We go pick up when we order out, and the time ranges from 20 to 40 minutes round trip. I mostly cook at home and almost ALWAYS have groceries delivered. I pay the annual fee for the usual suspect and tip my driver for that service. Worth every penny to me for the time I don't spend at the store. I have always gotten perfectly fine produce and meat. I enjoyed this episode. TFS.
I use a grocery delivery service a couple times a month, absolutely worth it to me. All of my cooking is done at home and not having to travel to the other side of town is worth the annual fee. I have 2 small grocery stores 1/4 mile from my home and shop there for things I don’t get delivered. We used to have a BJ’s membership, between not paying that, the gas and time involved makes it worth it for us.
I've been enjoying this podcast more and more and this was another great topic. As far as food delivery...I grew up in NE Philly. So far out, there was farm land around our apartment in the early 60's. We didn't have a car. My mother would occasionally order cheesesteaks from a place called The Shanty. When she called, the first thing they'd ask was "pick up or delivery?" I'm not sure, but I'm guessing they had employees making deliveries because we often had the same guy. Now, as an adult, I have never used a food delivery service and most likely never will. I can't justify the expense. I prefer my own cooking but there are times I get tired of it and have the luxury of being able to walk or drive to a restaurant. Tara, thank you for being so vulnerable in answering Uncle Bob's question. I'm glad you survived to tell the tale and I'm glad you have the time now to be doing more of what you truly love and being with your family. Jim, I do follow a few other cooking channels or people who dissect ingredients in food products, etc. Some of them do push products (their own and/or others), and sometimes I am influenced by what they say. However, I'm big on fact checking, research, and credibility. Keep up the good work.
I think it can be annoying if someone is promoting their own product, but I do quite like it when youtube cooks promote products made by other companies that they have used and believe strongly in. It is very helpful to someone who is cooking and needs direction on the best products to buy.
I have memberships to the various delivery services through my credit card. I stick to ordering from restaurants for which there is no/low delivery and service fees and then tip well. Am I paying more? Sure. But my time is at a premium these days, so it is worth it to me.
Most of these food delivery services benefited from COVID-related loans and grants. As those subsidies went away, they passed the costs to the customers. When enough customers look at their bills and see how much they are charged they may stop using them. These services will either adapt to the current events or not.
How about those boxed prepared meals and meal kits like HelloFresh and Blue Apron? Addition: Coincidentally, a lawyer on TH-cam channel I watch hawks these meal kits, along with electric tooth brushes and boots. For me, a total turn-off, makes him look self-serving and grubbing for cash, having nothing to do with the subject and content of his lawyering channel or his actual expertise.
I think food delivery is a necessity for some people , and for others, some of the time, it is necessary such as when you are unable to drive due to health issues. Maybe some have Covid, RSV or the flu, or they can’t drive due to medication which contraindicates driving or injury. It is a luxury for every other situation. People who “need” it only as a convenience, a luxury, can stop complaining! Of course it makes your meal cost more! People are not realistic about what the actual cost of providing such a service is. Everyone knows the cost of gas, but do you know the drivers spend unpaid time waiting for a call? You have to pay for convenience. It’s not free!
I think the ultimate conclusion is that if people feel delivery services are not worth the cost, they won’t use them, and they will fade away and die out. Not to worry!
Yes! And In addition to tip, tax, delivery, there's a service fee. 😢crazy. However, if they removed Uber eats, Door dash, etc from Manhattan, there'd be hell 2 pay😅. We're lazy people here in nyc...😂
I would refuse to comply if a delivery service told me to up my menu prices if I wanted their service. I’d tell them, “Take a hike!” The service company should be customer option, or they’re out. Period.
My family members have multiple food issues (peanuts are scary, and celiac is ugly), I order online from very few places and always pick up the food. I use your recipes with Gluten Free Barilla or Dececco pasta
Never have been a fan of food delivery! Many, many reason that I won’t go into. We used to order takeout at the best Italian food eatery about 15 minutes from our home “Three Brothers”. I became friends with the owners and Nonna who did the cooking and the sons made the pizza, calzones, Stromboli, Italian boats and sandwiches. While I waited for my order, they would make me Clams with linguini! A little perk! Loved it and miss it very much! delizioso!
I never buy the "merch" that is pushed by You Tubers. I have my own opinions and trusted brands that I will buy. I watch their videos for the cooking demonstrations and recipes. I do not want them trying to push their stuff on me.
Hello! I am Elia. I am a female, and it is pronounced EH-lee-uh like Ellie-uh. No worries on the pronounciation! And it is a pretty gender neutral name. Sometimes they will add a "s" at the end for boys. Thank you for your bakery suggestions, I look forward to going with my list and finding these items. And to note, another commenter asking if the focus was on new york or new jersey bakeries and I just wanted to say that I live in the midwest, in Southeasten Wisconsin. We have a history of southern Italian immigrants coming to Wisconsin to work manufacturing industry, rails roads, laying many of the cities streets and walkways. We have frequent "festas" throughout the year. We also have a grocery store chain (sendik's) and many restaurants built/run by the Balistreri family (not the italian bakery I was referring to). We also have a large German immigrant population. We have a lot of diverse backgrounds in the city and it is amazing to be a part of all of the great foods and traditions that make the city what it is. I know its not like this everywhere in the US, but if you do live in a city that has history and culture do yourself a favor and patronize those businesses. Many of them were started and still run by decendents of "mom and pop".
eurie here. like 60 dollars for food for two (ok, splurging!) and then 30 dollars fees and delivery is insane, I think.... we rarely order in, but in our prices usually fees and tip are included, and you can give an extra tip if you want to.... we might spend 20 euros sometimes for pizza and some beverages. I'd love some thai food lol, haven't had any in ages. maybe a cooking series? And my little bakery (Northern Italy) make the best cornetti ever, but I like mine with no filling, husb likes crema filling. You know what you could try to bake? A colomba! For easter..... It's difficult to make tho, at home....
I like having delivery options beyond the traditional pizza & Chinese carryouts, but the additional charges aren't always worth it. Not to mention Door Dash & Uber drivers might not have the means to preserve hot food. Nowadays I'll either eat at those restaurants or order pickup directly through their websites. My advice: never EVER order Taco Bell through these services unless you're getting enough food for a large group. ➡This idiot (me)⬅speaks from experience 😅🙃 In terms of TH-camrs & other influencers selling "merch," I understand why they do it. I'm into collecting watches & follow several reviewers on YT. Many of them also sell stuff, from t-shirts & mugs to watch straps & even their own watches. This pushing of "merch" is obnoxious. I think it's refreshing that you guys don't do that, though I would totally buy your cookbook!.
I think these delivery services are going to eventually fade just like Groupon. They will self implode because of their usery practices. Same as Groupon which in the US has lost over 40% of their active users. And in the first quarter of 2023 had an operational loss of $30.57 million.
Oh my goodness. Yes we have ordered Uber eats for our favorite restaurants and literally it’s double the price. . With all the fees and tips and everything. And usually not as good as well . Ha.
I am very tired of you tubers constantly promoting their products. There is one site that constantly does this. I used to like him when his videos were about healthy eating. Now it’s 90 percent promoting his products. I will not mention a name. But he and family used to live in Chicago. Not anymore.
I don’t have Italian bakeries, or, frankly, any family owned bakeries of any kind for 100 mi around, or maybe much more. There are no bakeries worth diddly ANYWHERE within reach, unless I booked a flight. Are you narrowing your focus to New Yoest York Italians on Lobg Island? You are leaving most of your audience out. Unless, of course, you want to teach how to make authentic homemade Italian bakery pastries at home. I don’t. I would buy them, but not gonna make ‘em.
GREAT subject!! I never knew all those facets of delivery services! Separate issue- 'Im married to a hot tempered Italian man and it would drive me crazy if he had Tara's always seeing both sides of issues and avoiding an opinion lest someone might be offended type of personality. I'm sure she's a lovely woman but I'd find myself yelling 100 times a day, "Just say it!!!!!!!!"

And the food is in much better condition, warmer and not cold and coagulated.
@jeanniebrooks no limo but yes Uber
On the topic of sfogliatelle, it’s worth noting the filling is made with ricotta. Whereas the lobster tail is filled with French cream

I agree Tara! There is something to say about quality of life!

Speaking of delivery, do you have an episode or plans for one about meal kit services such as hello fresh.
Tara’s Question:”What do you do about it?”
Answer: You don’t ‘t pay for services that you feel are not worth your money. It’s pretty simple, really.
I think it can be annoying if someone is promoting their own product, but I do quite like it when youtube cooks promote products made by other companies that they have used and believe strongly in. It is very helpful to someone who is cooking and needs direction on the best products to buy.

When enough customers look at their bills and see how much they are charged they may stop using them. These services will either adapt to the current events or not.
If there are so many bad customer experiences with food delivery services, then customers will stop using them and they will go out of popular usage.
How about those boxed prepared meals and meal kits like HelloFresh and Blue Apron?
Addition: Coincidentally, a lawyer on TH-cam channel I watch hawks these meal kits, along with electric tooth brushes and boots. I'm retired from pharma. We had catered lunch meetings every day. The local pizzeria ultimately refused our orders because it slammed them.

And my little bakery (Northern Italy) make the best cornetti ever, but I like mine with no filling, husb likes crema filling. You know what you could try to bake? A colomba! For easter..... It's difficult to make tho, at home....

U LOOK FAB!!!

➡This idiot (me)⬅speaks from experience 😅🙃
In terms of TH-camrs & other influencers selling "merch," I understand why they do it.
Wow. You said “SHIT.”
Damn, glad I live in the uk, much cheaper and good quality
I think these delivery services are going to eventually fade just like Groupon. They will self implode because of their usery practices. Same as Groupon which in the US has lost over 40% of their active users. And in the first quarter of 2023 had an operational loss of $30.57 million.
Oh my goodness. Yes we have ordered Uber eats for our favorite restaurants and literally it’s double the price. . With all the fees and tips and everything. And usually not as good as well . Ha.
tara has such nice hair she shoudnt hide it under a cap
Tara here, thanks for the compliment. I was 1 week away from getting my grays covered up. Definitely needed the hat! lol
well this was interesting because my job is ubereats delivery. i would never order delivery though because of the cost lol.
Tara needs to make ice cream.
I get Pizza delivered thats about it using there delivery guy
GREAT subject!! I never knew all those facets of delivery services!
Separate issue-
'Im married to a hot tempered Italian man and it would drive me crazy if he had Tara's always seeing both sides of issues and avoiding an opinion lest someone might be offended type of personality. I'm sure she's a lovely woman but I'd find myself yelling 100 times a day, "Just say it!!!!!!!!"
