Honestly the first movie was legitimately good. Not Pixar good or anything, but it was a decent heartwarming kids film. But then Illumination saw how much money they could make and ripped the heart of the Despicable Me series, leaving only minions, minions, and more minions.

IMO the first despicable me is illuminations only good movie so far. And even that isn’t super great or anything but it is a fun watch once in a while

I hate what happened to this franchise. A series that started off a genuine breath of fresh air with a very hilarious and heartwarming movie (and even some legitimately great action sequences), quickly went downhill once they realized that their target audience literally only cared about Minions doing funny things.

Older people were expected to have spouses to have kids with, not be friends with. Men and women were pushed into separate hobbies, clubs, etc, and shamed more for divorce if it was even legal where they were. People wound up trapped with those they didn't have anything in common with, and women especially we're unhappy because most had to work outside the home but then also do all the chores in the home. So they complained and men called them nags and it was all very bad for everyone.

Something worth mentioning is another reason Victor is a good villain is because from a kids point of view endless bickering, and one-upping is similar to siblings which makes it relatable for kids but also able to make the parents who have to deal with this all of the time, laugh

The only good spin off of a comic relief character in my opinion is the all hail king Julian series. It complements Madagascar and builds so much on it as well all being actually funny. Most the time. Would highly recommend people watch this.

Despicable Me: Fine film, funny and touching at some times. 🙂 I've watched various times and I've enjoyed all of them, tbh. Not the best I've seen, though.
Despicable Me 2: Eh, didn't live up to the original, but well, it's still watchable and standable.
Minions: un-funny, irritating characters (not just the bloody Minions), lots of badly integrated stereotypes (I don't mind nation stereotypes if it adds something to the plot and it's not there just to shame or make fun of the people of that country for free, as in this case) and a stupid plot. I want those 90 minutes of my life back. 🥺
Despicable Me 3: watched the trailer and made the wise decidion not to watch it. Just from the trailer, it looked plainly stupid and cliché.

The first two Despicable Me movies were pretty okay. The third one though….. we don’t talk about the third one.

When I tell you my best friend was OBSESSED with minions in elementary school! Like I don’t even know why and I didn’t back then but she was absolutely crazy. She owned so many minions shirts, and she used to wear this outfit like every day that was just a yellow minions top with a blue skirt because it “made her look like a girl minion”, she dressed up like a minion for Halloween, owned every stuffed animal, liked Universal Studios more than Disneyland because there was a minions ride, she was crazy! I can confirm that we are now juniors in high school and she is no longer obsessed with minions but you can still see remnants of her minion obsession scattered around her house. I literally saw the midnight (more like 9:00 but it’s a kids movie) premiere of the minions movie with her, like I had to stand in a long ass line to see the minions movie at my bedtime!
She used to send me rants about people who hated the minions. There was that one girl on TH-cam who made a video about how the minions are ruining her life and my best friend cried about it. I didn’t know it then but I was living in the worst timeline.

I really hate how this franchise went from a genuinely sweet plot and quirky characters to - *"MINION: THE MERCHANDISE."* because it makes me angry that I skipped out on Megamind - it's the same plot, but less marketable.
Also, Despicable Me 1 already gave us a cooler backstory for the Minions: they were genetically modified popcorn kernels. So imagine my shock when the spinoff *doesn't* go with that and have a plot where Gru tries out 400 different microwaved things before settling on kernels while the girls try to help him.
The retcon doesn’t really make sense either…. In the orientation day short, which takes place during the events of DM1, there are still minions being recruited, as if they were JUST hired or created.
MEGAMIND IS BETTER
The thing at the end of movies that says "any resemblance to people living or dead is purely coincidental" is even at the end of biographical movies. It is put at the end of basically any movie because of a lawsuit against MGM's 1932 "Rasputin and the Empress".

Honestly, Seamus's argument about the second movie being a lot better "outside of the minion parts" made me a little upset. Like, yeah, I really like Seamus's content, but saying the second movie was as good or better, is just an insult to me. Because I really loved the angle the first movie went to where Gru is the girls' dad by the end. Like, that is so great for single fathers, which deserve more appreciation! But then the second movie is all "Oh no! Agnes can't function properly without a motherly figure and Gru is holding them back if he doesn't get a partner!" Like, what? Why are single fathers not allowed to be a thing, especially because the first movie directly shows that Gru is a good father once he starts caring about the girls, and he doesn't need a partner to help take care of them.
to be fair i don’t think it’s better just thought you could make an argument that it was!! specifically in contrast to the other two films which were significantly worse :))

I remember seeing the trailer for the Minions movie and convinced it was just a short, I literally had an argument with someone telling trying to tell them a Minion movie wouldn’t work cuz you can’t understand them. And I wasn’t wrong with that last bit.
i actually like the second movie. probably because of nostalgia because i was 8? 9? when it came out and was obssessed with it. but it's a cute movie (the first one is the superior one). i actually went to watch the third one in the movies with my dad on my 13th birthday and that was the first time i thought "maybe i'm too old for animation". i guess i wasn't too old for animation (i don't think there is such a thing), the movie was just bad

I feel dumb saying this, but these are like some of the most nostalgic movies for me (well, the first two are). I watched them so much when I was a kid and was pretty much obsessed with them (I can confirm that when you’re a kid the minions seem funnier), and I legitimately think those first two still hold up. Like, I rewatched them a few months ago and found myself genuinely invested and laughing! But I think it was when I saw Despicable Me 3 that it really hit me- the first two are the only good ones, and they’re milking this franchise into oblivion. It’s almost tragic, because they could’ve kept better standards of quality and this might not have happened.
I actually really enjoy the first two. The OG I found had a lot more heart but I found 2 to be more laugh-out-loud funny, and I thought what they did with the minions was actually pretty interesting-and just in general I liked how they challenged Gru’s new status quo. Minions and 3 were both underwhelming though. If I were writing Despicable Me 4, I’d do a small time skip and then make the story about Gru, Lucy and the Girls all embracing villainy together after they realize that’s where Gru belongs. Gru bring a hero just doesn’t sit right with me. Actually, I am excited for minions 2 (weirdly) purely because it can explore what made Gru an interesting protagonist and by extension Despicable Me an interesting series in the first place.
I thought the “Orlando coming soon” gag was amusing.
So, in Poland Despicable Me isn't called that (I guess if it was translated it would kinda suck?), instead it's called How to Steal the Moon. This makes sense because they didn't really expect the sequels. However because of that when the sequels came, they had to be called something else so they went all in with the Minions. 2nd movie is called "Minions Make Trouble" (in the literal translation) and the 3rd one is literally called "Gru, Dru and the Minions". The Minions were so famous that they literally shoe-horned them in both titles.
Luckily, they didn't have to do anything for the Minions Movie because Ilumination did it for them

I remember the name of the middle girl because as a little kid, before watching the movie, I had some collectibles from the supermarket and they had the characters' names on the back. So I made up a whole story where Gru had created her in the laboratory because I thought "Edith" was related to "edit" as a word and I thought it meant "create" because I didn't know English. That is very complicated and I had completely forgotten about it

Honestly I love the characters designs in Illumination films like you don't usualky see more catoony designs in animation especially in 2010. I I like that some characters have more sharp angles like grus nose like I am used to seeing soo many round character in 3D animation.

i was around 8-10yo when despicable me 1 came out, and my dad took me to see it in the cinema. he ABSOLUTELY fell in love with the entire franchise and he gets so much joy out of dumb minion jokes. it's so wholesome somehow. every time i want to make him happy i watch one of the minion or despicable me movies with him and seeing the joy on his face is so precious hahaha
Seamus now you have to review the superior movie with a villain who becomes good that is Megamind, it came out at the same time as despicable me and it kind failed but it's way better

I genuinely quite enjoyed the first despicable me film. There's such a sense of whimsical child like wonder to it that's very appealing when the weight of reality gets to you. Almost a liberating film to watch in that sense. They definitely lose that as the film's go on. That's my 2 cents anyway
If only Illumination kept their focus of this franchise on Gru.

Now it's popular to hate minions because they made one awful spin off movie about them... Why? I just ignore the cash grab and enjoy the movies like I used to, I certainly won't bully or shame someone for liking minions.

I enjoyed the Spy vs. Spy reference in the credits for Despicable Me 3, and the way they managed to make the television scenes of robot Brad destroying the city look like an actuactual guy in a suit, like in actual old television shows, as well as the "unicorn" capturing, so I all in all enjoyed it.
Still not the greatest movie ever, but still good enough.

things that that annoyed me about despicable me 2 is that they added a very pointless character named Antonio, he was never scene again at the end of the movie, so I don't get why he was added in the movie if he wasn't going to do anything important to the story. Removing him from the movie won't make a differences, I would have written him way better.

I genuinely like the first despicable me movie. Also, I find it so funny how different the acceptance of the minions is around the world. I lived in Japan for a long time and everyone loves minions over there. I think that's why I still see the fun in them too.
I really enjoyed the first two when I was younger and still think they are enjoyable today. After that, the movies were just big cash grabs. Like they didn't care about the characters anymore.

Yeah... I've suffered through DM3 one too many times just cause me and my dad wanted to have a large binging session for the franchise. (Which is actually fun to do for any franchise. Great way to see how they improved upon/ruined certain things.)

I’m 16 so I saw dm 1, 2 and the minions movie in theatres and honestly they’re all pretty good movies like I say that with confidence. They’re not masterpieces and theyre not even great but there all good. It’s only dm 3 that’s straight up bad

I think the first 2 despicable me voices are probably in my opinion 2 of the best films I’ve seen. In my opinion.

17:45 I don’t think that message at the end of films protects the filmmaker’s from any lawsuits. I had seen a video on the topic and quite a few movies have been sued for wrong portrayals of people.
