    The reason why some of these mine adits and vent shafts are grated off, rather than sealed, is to allow bats to continue using the mines as their homes.

    The Lucy Gray mine was my grandparents mine. At least they had a claim for awhile. Thanks for covering it. It's been onn the AAA maps for years. Look for rock structures, my grandpa built houses. Whoever cut the bar had to have a generator for enough power. They also had the Old Woman Springs mine in the San Bernardino mountains near Holcomb. It was my grandmother's passion and she lived like a guy truth be told.

    Loved this! Thanks! You got yourself a new subscriber! 😀 Born and raised in New England here, but I've lived in California for the past 31 years and LOVE the West: the history, the old mining camps/towns, the ghost towns....love exploring places like this and really love the Mojave Desert not to mention Nevada (and yeah, Las Vegas!) This video was right up my alley and very entertaining. Glad I found you and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos!

    Sarah that yellow truck I think was x-Army surplus then the Yellow paint job was ordered by Nevada highway or it was a local municipal road crew, after that the miner bought the truck 🤔

    18:58 Yes, gases can be radioactive. One you might have heard of is Radon, a byproduct of the natural decay of uranium 238 and Thorium 232. One of it's isotopes, Radon 222, has been blamed for causing lung cancer among non-smokers with no other known risk factors. It has a relatively short half-life, but long enough to cause problems. Nice episode. I really enjoy the old mines and "man camps" that you explore. Be well, and stay safe.

    • @j.b.9895
      @j.b.9895 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Radon half life is very short but that doesn’t mean it’s here than gone. It is the product of uranium and thorium degradation that has a half life of billions of years. If you have radon in your house you have to capture it and send it out and up for all practical purposes forever

    • @SCSlimBoiseID
      @SCSlimBoiseID 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@j.b.9895 I didn't address the half-lives of Uranium or Thorium; I only addressed the half life of a specific isotope of Radon. I also did not state or imply that it is not continuously emitted from the Earth. Obviously, since it comes from Uranium and Thorium, and Uranium and Thorium exist in the Earth's crust and are always decaying and emitting Radon gas, as long as that is the case, Radon will continue to be released into the environment, including people's dwellings. None of that was my point. She questioned whether a gas could be radioactive and I supplied an example of one and what its source is.

    • @j.b.9895
      @j.b.9895 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I know but anyone knowing nothing about radon might think it’s inconsequential due to its short half life. I wasn’t trying to fault any of your comment

    any woman familiar with Betty boop scores points with me . she originally started out as a dog character, but as she developed, all that was left of the dog were in the way the ears were drawn.
    one has to find a place that is equipped to show highly flammable nitrate film, plus have an interest in historical cartoons to be exposed to such stuff, like the UCLA film library.

    I love old machinery. I used to dumpster dive whenever I was allowed to at various work sites. It’s amazing the things that get thrown out from business owners and large industrial companies. I also dug through the dumpster at the small town where I worked for a few years. I found 100 year old blueprints, solid brass steam gauges and old street signs. Lots of the stuff I salvaged from dumpsters are now hanging on the walls of my huge workshop. I convinced my son to also keep his eyes open for cool stuff at the school where he’s a teacher. When they remodeled, he salvaged the cabinets from the science lab and they are now my shop cabinets.

    When you said this mine was featured in a game, I immediately thought of Fallout New Vegas, Even before you said it. Lol.
    Fallout New Vegas is a very popular game. I haven't played it in about 13 years, so I don't remember this mine but it seems about right.
    And you throwing in that little piece of trivia is awesome, that is some world-class research there. Haha.

    The story of Fallout New Vegas is about how "Mr. House" (the house always wins?) saved a large portion of Las Vegas from the nuclear holocaust. It is like an oasis in the desert. I don't recognize the mine.

    That truck looks a lot like a military surplus 2 and a half ton truck. Even the plates inside are military, I spent time as a soldier in the back of those plenty. Most were built during WW2. Also I used live above a mine that was completely closed off with a heavy metal door, at one point when taking the trail down there I saw someone busted it open.

    Loved Fallout New Vegas,! But, it's been so long, I don't remember the details to remember this spot. Might have to go back to my old games and take another trip, especially now that I have more knowledge of the real Mojave desert these days. Would probably appreciate it more! Also not sure it occurs often in mines but something to be aware of is H2S (hydrogen sulfide) gas. Even low concentrations can permanently damage respiratory system and has resulted in many deaths. If you smell sulphur/rotten eggs get to fresh air immediately. Can't stand the thought of a world absent WonderHussy content.

    Wood-burning stove with the nearest trees far and few between? Maybe they brought loads of wood in with them. I'm currently trying to insulate a 36' camper and it is quite challenging. The walls are only about 2-3 inches thick with scant insullation. You know, I lived in Red Bluff which is a nice 3-hour drive to Reno, and most people don't realize that half of California is desert. The beach towns are all west of the mountains. From Bakersfield up to Redding is almost all semi- or full desert! This is the real, "Golden State," brown really. P.S. I recently got divorced and moved to Clarkedale, Mississippi, and I love it here!

    4:30 the Seton safety booklet,Seton used to be a very over priced safety and cleaning product supplies company in England (and now it seems that they were in America as well)it doesn't exist in the UK anymore, I noticed the linked in and TH-cam logos beside that in the box too,and the Kirkland Costco vitamins look very recent, when you see the state of the deterioration of the wooden hut and the contents I was going to guess that it was abandoned in the mid to late 1980s at the latest even with vandalism damaging doors and windows and letting in the elements quicker, but the safety booklet seems to put it at around 2006 abandonment ?

    I remember those old wool carpets before nylon and other man-made fibers.

    Great adventure, you could potentially be stepping on and over gold that has washed down from the tailings when it rains

    Wow only 30-40 from Vegas! Love you found those brochures. Refrigerator wasn't too sketchy. Definitely would be freezing in that shack. Could not imagine how it would have looked in 2014😂! Didn't the mine was for all those minerals! Wow took awhile to get to the mine. Everything is dilapidated 😮! Definitely a lot of old equipment! Be careful 😮! I would not spend a night there eithet😊!
