  • You might be wondering What is GD&T? The short answer is "it's a system of dimensioning and tolerancing from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers which allows you to know with 100% certainty that your parts will fit and function within their next-level assembly. For a bit more detail watch this short 10 minute video!
    Fully Detailed Drawing:
    drive.google.com/file/d/1-CWH...
    3D PDF of the Assembly:
    drive.google.com/file/d/1ljML...
    Instagram: @straighttothepointengineering
    Discord: / discord
This video was created to help beginners rapidly understand GD&T and quickly use the concepts in practical applications. Technical vocabulary was purposefully NOT used in an attempt to convey these topics to those who do NOT have a background in GD&T.

I’m a retired mechanical engineering manager. We did not have assembly problems with the classical tolerance system. Converted to GD&T because that was the way the wind was blowing. Led to endless ‘discussions’ among the designers and burned through hours trying to figure it out. (And we had GD&T classes). On balance, it was a loser for our (mainly cylindrical) parts and assemblies. Use GD&T where needed, where NEEDED.
I think a thesaurus of GD&T assemblies and parts might be useful as a reference.

Great Video. I think one thing that I would have added to point 6, is that its important that all people involved WANT to use GDnT, instead of traditional methods of tolerancing. Also its worth noting that the trade off in using GDnT is more time spent interpreting drawings at every level. Once you have your head around the system its really not an issue though

The intro explaning the essence of geometric function is great: Only in the contex of an assembly a function is realized. But no one is bothered by the lack of an explicit functional specification. I'm afraid so it can't be surprising that the presented gd&t of a single part has errors: E.g. datum B and C are equal? Take care for the function: Every real feature of a datum has a toleance itself. This must be taken into account when calculating the calling geometric toleances! By the way one last question: What are the mainfunctions of a geometric feature? It would be very helpful to clearify this first.

GD&T is "Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing"
Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing provides a comprehensive system for symbolically
defining the geometrical tolerance zone within which features must be contained. It
provides an accurate transmission of design specifications among the three primary users
of engineering drawings; design, manufacturing, and quality assurance groups. Some
techniques introduced in ANSI/ASME Y14.5M have been accepted by ISO. These
techniques include projected tolerance zone, the three-plane datum concept, total runout
tolerance, multiple datums, and datum targets. Although Y14.5M follows ISO practice
closely, there are still differences between ISO and U.S. practice.

    Hello
I would like to thank you for your video are very informative. I have a question about the tolerance's numbers. For example all these symbols and letters are understandable for me but how someone will take the decision for the size of the tolerances or what is the suitable tolerance for him? ok for the bearing or o rings etc you can find specific tolerances tables... But when you have to take a decision for example... to fit a rectangle to a pocket, how can you know What size (tolerance) should have your rectangle? I can think a few questions as a gui to help me to decide, like do I have a thermal expansion? For what use do I need the assembling etc.... Is any book can help me?
