Hey Dan, you mentioned that you just have a bunch of those tesla cables lying around, but I think its more of a first world problem for you. I don't want to pay more money to get a charger installed in my house and I'd rather us the charger that comes free when you buy your electric car. I don't understand why Elon thinks this has no use, basically every Tesla owner (probably not a tesla owner that has 2 or more cars) use the mobile connector for charging at home, and charging at relatives homes when they go on vacation. Tesla basically pulled off an Apple move right there removing the mobile connector.

Not good advice in this video in my opinion. The wall connector is $400 but requires installation by an electrician unless you are willing to try yourself. Installation is usually $750-1000 plus the $400 connector price. It is also overkill for most people’s driving habits.

The wall charger installation should be basically the same price as a NEMA 14-50 outlet. You're literally only connecting three wires. 99% of the install price is going to be for the wiring.

It’s actually illegal to drive in the UK with tyres with a tread depth of less than 1.6mm and you can be subject to a fine of up to £2500 per tyre + 3 penalty points on your license - it’s that serious!

I think the outrage comes more from the fact that there was no price change in the car with the loss of the charger, so you're paying the same but getting less. If they removed the charger but dropped the price by 400$/200$ then no one would have cared.

      @MichaelVanBladel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@sameerramdeen477 I don't agree with that argument though. It's an objectively anti-consumer move and there's no reason you as a consumer (assuming you're a consumer and not profiting from this move) should be defending it. Lets say the price of manufacturing is 100$ for that charger, over 1/2 million cars in a year is a truckload of money in tesla's pocket and that's the reason they did it. Any other reason given is an afterthought (unless like I mentioned, the price was lowered, then the purpose would indeed be to help with e-waste). 400$ might not be "that big a deal with cars that expensive" but it's a couple of nice restauraunt meals or a new tech gadget 😉

The problem with removing the charging cable is the principle. When you buy an electric car you want to have everything you need included with it that allows it to charge.

As an owner of a Model 3, I found the mobile charger so important *when I first took delivery*. At that time I didn't have a house, we were renting and couldn't install a charger. I think that's when the mobile connector comes into play. In big cities, I've seen people hang extension cords out their windows to charge. In terms of travel, I do agree that the supercharger network has grown so much that you probably won't run into a time where you NEED a 220v or 110v charger. However, just in 2020 we took a road trip to the Grand Canyon and there was no superchargers or any other electric car chargers available. We had to stop at a campsite to charge and the 220v connector was key! I do think Tesla should include it, or lower the price by $200 since they're not including it anymore. It's kind of odd that they kept the price the same, but removed a key component to the car. But I will say this -- Once you own a Tesla, and a home you can install a charger, then the mobile connector sits in your trunk and collects dust. I find it only valuable for traveling (in the rare cases superchargers or level 2 chargers aren't available) and for maybe a quick charge when visiting a friends/family house if need be.
PS. Don't go through a regular car wash! Touchless car washes only for Teslas! Regular washes eat away at the Tesla paint and can easily scratch and damage your paint. Look up videos!

Its essential in areas outside the US with poor charging infrastructure, we take it on road trips although it is becoming less necessary. Tesla should give you a card saying you own a Tesla when you purchase one, then if your workplace collects enough, you should get a discount on a charger installation at your workplace. Charging at the same time that PV panels are exporting their excess to the grid will do wonders for grid stabillity.

Just use the UK rule. If there is less than 1.6mm of tread across the centre 75% of the tyre, it should be changed.
Uneven wear means your inflation is either too high or too low depending on where the wear is most, always best practice to check air pressure before you go on a road trip and check when your tyres are cold.
Either low air pressure for a long time or your tracking and/or tyre balancing is out. Both of those issues should be able to be rectified at somewhere like Discount tire...

I'm pretty sure you have to do alignment on your Tesla as well which is why you have uneven wear. 36K miles isn't very much for them to be completely balled unless they are high performance summer tires vs. all seasons. My parents in law live at the country, not any chargers in the area, so it is great, to be able to use the mobile charger and still be able to drive around. • @jasonman1515

Good proper way to maintain tire life is balance and rotation every 5k miles. keep the life of the tire last longer for sure. Some manufacturer want the vehicle to come in at 15k-20k miles and do a alignment, which that is fine. You just maintaining the front end and making sure its tracking right down the road. When I going to replace tires, I will get an alignment done, just to make sure everything is all good and don't have uneven wear on the new tires. I can get close to 60k+ miles on a set of tires by doing just that.

What about when you want to charge at home off your solar panels ? Trickle charging off the standard cable is better to manage the power load (depending on your total solar) and power usage in your house. When you have a number of things you are using at the same time. No doubt after your solar vid you would have to manage this carefully when you have air conditioning, pool pump and car charger at the same time.

When my mom bought her BMW i3 in late 2019, it came with a mobile charger (J1772 with a 110V plug that is not removable) AND a wall charger with the installation included (i'm not sure if it is standard or if it was a promotion). She has only used the mobile charger 3 times. The first time was after delivery before the wall charger was installed, 2nd was at a hotel that doesn't have any charger and the 3rd was at a rural property to spend the weekend. Of course, the i3 is not meant to be taken on road trips and that hotel is around 80 km (50 mi) from our home.
I think that Tesla should not remove the charger just like that but instead offer either a) 200/400 dollars off the cost of the car b) a discount on the wall charger or c) include a simple "emergency"/temporary 110V only charger.
Now, if Tesla is removing the mobile charger because they are eating the cost of it, then they should include it by default (pump the price up and say that this is why) and offer the different options I mentioned above. This is the only valid reason to remove it.
Another possible option is lending the charger, get it for some time when you receive the car until you install the charger.
