Making his return to NYFF with not one but two Main Slate selections, Japanese filmmaker Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Asako I & II, NYFF56) affirms his stature as a true rising star of world cinema, and one of the foremost chroniclers of the ebbs and flows of human relationships. With Drive My Car and Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy-a pair of vividly realized and ceaselessly surprising emotional epics-Hamaguchi demonstrates his singular talent for tracing the intricate workings of the heart amid the perennial paradoxes of modern life. Join us for an in-depth conversation with the writer-director to explore the resonances and shared preoccupations of his new films and his prolific body of work.

I am watching"Happy Hour"now. I'm almost at the half way point, my doctor said that if I stay hydrated and get up and stretch every few hours so I don't get blood clots in my legs, I should be able to finish it. All jokes aside, I really am enjoying it. Hamaguchi is

John Cassavettes is a great starting point for any director. Loved his work. not to mention his wife the great Gena Rowlands.

I don’t like the idea of giving a movie the best picture award solely for political relevance. However, I know I am speaking hyperbolically, but the Korean sign language monologue ALONE I think is reason enough to give Drive My Car Best Picture. The character arc of Kafuku parallels recent collective experiences, even if his is on a microlevel. Similar to what we have gone through with COVID and now the war in Ukraine, Kafuku is dealing with trauma and must learn that what’s best for him is to keep on living.

Peak Hamaguchi is Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy not Drive my car...drive my car is too commercial especially asako. Hamaguchi should not be swayed doing hollywood movie they will destroy his creative process.

too "commercial" funniest thing i've ever seen. ozu and mizoguchi are as mainstream in japan as akira kurosawa was with his action movies. you're just projecting hard. you think kiyoshi kurosawa's and kore-eda's works aren't commercially successful movies? clown. they were always under studio restrictions. that's how they get funded lmfao
