- The Detroit mayor and Detroit police chief held a joint news conference Monday morning to discuss "illegal" block parties following a block party shooting that left two people dead and 19 others hurt.

@dunnrite8299 I don't think that's the problem. It was 21 ppl shoot. You think out of 21 ppl there wasn't any home training. No the problem became when they legalized weed. Their minds aren't developed enough to handle whatever it is that they put on the weed. All that stuff you get in THE GAS STATION and purchase has a big effect on the human mind. I live on the street this mass shooting took place on and I don’t know why they keep callin it a “Block Party” because it WASN’T. A block party is a party that the people who LIVE on the block throws to have fun with their neighbors that ALSO live on the block. We didn’t know them kids. They don’t live on this street. I’m sure majority of them don’t even live in this area. This was WAY too close to home. Maybe open back up the Recreation centers so these kids have something constructive to do with their time other then drinking, smoking and shooting up a street they don’t even live on. We have a LOT of elderly people on this street and that was soooooo disrespectful and dangerous for them AND the rest of us. That ish was so sad.

I am not being cold hearted to those whom were hurt and the families of those whom had perished. My prayers and condolences goes out. However, after this incident if people still attend these illegal block parties knowing the shootings that had occurred at the last ones then attendees will be taking their lives into their own hands

I teach in Detroit and yes, we have what's called SEL (social emotional learning) infused in the curriculum. I'm a reading teacher and students are taught character traits like respect, empathy, integrity, and compassion. In many cases, kids don't see these things being demonstrated in their homes or community.
You can see the pastor is at his wits end.
I agree that parents need to do their jobs, but what do you suggest we do with all the kids whose parents have abandoned them? He's offering a solution that may help teach the next generation to be more responsible.

There's a rule to close a street on a block for a party - a yes for 75% of those that live on that block...not a percentage to stop the party based on a disturbance.

That’s actually a good idea who would come to I was growing up. I lived in the warning counter project the old side we had the own mini police department. This was the early 80s early 90s no drama plenty of parties. Everyone got along used to have many police stations everywhere but now the police are just as bad as, the one gangsters who can you trust?

What’s going on in the Black community? Seems like they’re going backwards instead of forward. Gangs were heavy when I was younger in the Asian community. All my brothers were gang affiliated but as we grew up and had children, we wanted better for our children so we steered them away from gun and violence. Mind you we also lived in the ghetto and on government assistance. The community moved forward as a whole. We shamed those who wreaked havoc in the community and held them accountable. Now, if you’re gang affiliated we just look at you like you’re goofy. Nothing is going to change if the community doesn’t want to put the effort.
Well, you guys decided to close off Belle Isle in the evenings. Parks closed off at 10. Decided against the race track. Where do you expect people to go to do the things they want to do? Only place left is the neighborhoods. People are going to party and race their cars. Always have, always will. Give them a place thats safe to do so or you'll just keep running into the same problems every summer.
There are vast amount of empty land within the 140 square miles in Detroit. Why not hold a block party on one of those parcels? That’s just an excuse young Detroiters make for their lawlessness.

So, you have a block party. Kids have social media and hear about an event and they’re coming from all over. Some may have been in town visiting relatives and heard about the event. You say you’re not victim shaming but you are, Chief. Errbody knows that Detroiters live all over the place these days, including the burbs but what is true is that the shooting probably wouldn’t have gone down if the party was in the burbs. And why is that? It’s not so simple. We need to take a hard look at this.
The police stopped the drag racing in my neighborhood, I believe they will deal with this.
