I actually have both the pro 7 and the pro 8 at work and the heat management of the 8 is loads better. The 7 gets hot by just using one note or browsing as you said. The pro 8 doesn't seem to even break a sweat if I plug an ultra wide wqhd screen to the surface dock.

What a nice video. I'm thinking about getting SP9 for daily work but, does it works good with Remot Desktop connections, outlook, teams and all that stuff?
I got my Microsoft-refurbished Surface Pro 8 for under 500 euro. Great value for the money, love it. On the downside it is quite heavy for a tablet, and also very very shiny.
Is 256GB enough? If yes then going for Pro 8 seems like a better decision to save some money. any advice? I do have the 1TB one drive and also 2TB google drive plans. So, in that situation would you recommend going for 256GB?
Uh this seems like they cost reduced the 9. If it’s a choice of i7 between the two the 8 seems to be the way to go. I’m biased because I have an 8 and the processor does everything I need it to do. The generations between these two aren’t wide enough to make a tangible difference.
Thanks for the in depth comparison. The surface pro 8 is still a contender and removing the earphone jacks in the newer devices and selling overpriced headphones and obsoleting millions of wired, perfectly functional high-quality headphones is just corporatism. Not environmentally friendly either. They will soon find a way to have devices burst into flames in our hands after two years. Keep up the good work!
Now bring back the fanless version, the card reader and the headphone jack on the Surface Pro 10 please! My i5 SP5?(The one without a number) is now down to about 60% battery capacity and my 3rd keyboard is hanging on to a thread. But I am seriously leaning at replacing it with a SP7+ still... I'd love the new screen and speakers, and don't really care about the money side of things, but the above is really important to me. But I don't want to buy old tech. Aarrghh!!!
12th gen Intel has been such a disappointment in the mobile space. the gpu in the Intel 12th is so bad. and the cpu aspect isn't so great. wish there was amd options here. but that said, I find the power management on the Surface Pro 9 much better than the Surface Pro 8. On the sp8, i basically shut down the system rather than put it to sleep because it would drain during sleep. this didn't happen with the sp7 and not with the sp9.
thanks for a nice review. Just have a little feedback, relating to how I would have found it to be more useful towards a more sound purchasing decision, as most of your viewers might be doing just like myself. While all the syn. cpu benchmark scores tell us a bit of the potential performance characteristics of the processor, I think what would be helpful is to actually focus on day to day use cases more, where it really matters. It's similar to buying cars, super sport cars capable of 180mph speeds, vs everyday Corollas that is just fine around town, say in London streets. Where would you actually use that 500hp engine and sticky handling. I'd say it's quite useless. So, back to the tablet, most gamers will be looking elsewhere, and others needing multi-core processing power will be looking for the "h" variant, or "p" for Intel. I would venture to say that most surface pro users are going to be browsing, utilizing MS Office automation software etc.... so does the 9th gen multi-core processor really matter? in every day browsing, powerpoint presentation, will I notice a difference, what about media consumption? using cyberlink dvd software, where the real actual everyday use "really is".... just food for thought.
Thank you mate, I appreciate the feedback, it can be very hard trying to cater a comparison for everyone so your info will help for future comparisons.
for your use either would be amazing so it comes down to price (8 should be cheaper) if you need a headphone jack (9 doesn't have one) and colour choice as 9 has more options :)
I'm satisfied with slim pen2 so I won't consider V3 now, but I want to know if I use Pro10(165u) and 4060ti(egpu) to play games like Forza Horizon5,will it perform better than my current gaming laptop with Ryzen 4800H and 3060 laptop?
I absolutely need a headphones jack. To my ears, 8 sounded better. To my eyes, 9 visuals were better. Going for the 8. Appreciate your thorough review.
Thank you for your in-depth review. It has been very helpful. I've been looking for a suitable laptop or tablet for school now and it looks like the Surface Pro 8 will be perfect for my needs and, like you said, be much more cost effective than the Surface Pro 9. Cheers mate
a couple of things. 1. there's no way you're getting 7 hours of battery from normal use. have a read of reddit. 2. you do need headphone jacks because 95% of the people in my office (about 60 staff) use wired headphones for teams and whatever else. yes most of them have BT headphones when they leave, but in the office, almost everyone uses wired headphones. i use wired headphones in and out of the office.
Totally agree being a dj that’s the reason I will go for the 8 with the headphone jack,I don’t know why Microsoft tek off the jack on the 9 ,makes no sense
Great review/ Personally. I hate the Alcantara finish and the flat pen. Still, I love the concept of this product which has been validated by the evolution of the ipad
It can. I've used Autocad for years on a Surface Pro 4 and currently a 7+. Sure isn't as snappy as a proper CAD workstation, but it will get the job done.
Great comparison! The affordable models in each line have only 8GB RAM. Could you do a video evaluating the value of 8GB vs 16GB on the Surface Pro line? Seems like 8GB is just adequate any more for basic productivity. So is 16GB worth it on these devices? thank you!
That is a good idea.I originally had the 8gb SP8 and during last Black Fridays sales I got a really cheap SP8 with 16gb. For me day to day use I really don't notice the difference and if I had payed full price I would have buyers remorse. My use case is: writing notes and scripts for these videos, light photoshop, research and web browsing, light sketching and watching the odd video.
@@MashITTech Awesome! thank you for the response. My use case is even less demanding--just writing, browsing, whiteboarding/designing on OneNote. Was wondering whether to spend the extra $$ for future proofing but it's hard to justify. Thanks again!

Depends on how much you need for performance and battery life. If the Intel 11th gen CPU is sufficient enough and you don't mind using chargers, then Surface Pro 8 is the better pick. I assume there are design engineering reasons for these changes which make the 9 a bit more efficient. For example, grouping the ports reduces the amount and complexity of wiring inside.
for the day to day use I preferer android tablets like galaxy tab s8 because android tablets are lighter and easier to use when you carry them and the android os is way simpler and easier to work with. in my opinion window tablets like surface pro are use mostly in professional way than the day to day use and despite windows 11 is better to work with when use it in tablet mode android and ios operating system is way better and easier to use for the casual people
they're just tuning up a little bit of performance and presenting it to the users as if thats a leap in a technology but in reality its hardly noticeable and for that barely noticeable feature they're charging like 100-200$
We had the first RT's, right up until the Pro 8 (bulk used were Pro 4's). Disappointed they're still using the Surface Connect Port, which they really should replace with another USB-C and help standardise charging.....not to mention that their chargers are totally over priced (plus the V2 Dock added another £100 to the price over the original Dock). As a business, the other issue was repairs, which only gives you the option to send off in the post, when compared to other manufactures offering next day onsite repair. Don't get me wrong, they're nice bits of kit (I'm typing on my Pro 7), but not fanatically durable over time, which is another reason we're now moving away from them.
The true upgrade is the Surface Pro X (SQ2 Arm) to Surface Pro 9 5G (SQ3 Arm) Have been using the Surface Pro 9 5G for nearly a week now, and so far it performed doing general office applications, Internet and light tasks on LTE quite well with good battery life. However Microsoft still needs to work more on that emulation/translation layer instead relying on devs to port things. My HEAVY use of the Surface Pro 9 5G Arm running many applications/programs often so far: + Outlook - Naturally when using a tablet on the go + OneNote - Note taking is a massive reason for tablets + Edge - Chrome I feel is too much of a system hog, if it were Linux I'd be using Firefox, but Edge seems ok so far. + Dowload managers - Jdownloader, Utorrent + LTE & Blue Tooth - Phone link, Surface Pen, ear buds + 60~120 dynamic refresh rate - ought to have 1htz for always on displays With all these things running on performance mode, I only got around 7 hours of batter until it hit 10% than I had to recharge. - SQ3 still has some ways to go to match both the M iPad Pro's power and battery life. - Microsoft still needs to refine a lot of the touch and gestures of Windows 11, especially in Portrait oriention, if the Surface Pro is to be the tablet king (It is first and foremost meant to be used as a tablet with the laptop abilities being there when placed down with a keyboard) Found some non-powerful but essential applications dissapointingly unable to be installed such as Super Display - connects any Samsung device via wireless or cable to act as a second monitor to the Surface Pro 9 5G. Microsoft is best to work on that emulation/translation layer like Apple's Rosetta 2, to get many legacy applications to run on Windows on Arm instead of relying on developers to port over applications to Arm (IF they do) so we won't need TWO sets of programs/applications to run things on X64 and Arm device in the future. Just ONE set of programs/applications. * Also dissapointed Microsoft opted to the Surface Pro 8/9 chasis for the Arm version when it could have been better suited to keep it in the Surface Pro X body. + Thinner + Lighter + No need for those air vents, because it doesn't need fans like the Intel chips
I don't understand why people don't buy headphones with the newer connector (USB-C) instead of using the extremely outdated 3.5mm that is becoming more and more obsolete. What am I missing?

I got a SP8 (new) base spec for £600 about 5 months ago, and the SP9 retails for £1100, so for me I would choose the SP8 without hesitation. Of course, with time the SP9 will be discounted, and the story may change then. But in the here and now, easy choice for SP8.
@@andyH_England With that said, you can use that scenario every time a new version comes out. When the Surface Pro 10 comes out the price of the Pro 9 will drop drastically, and you will say the exact same thing.
@@andyH_England How's the experience? I'm thinking also of giving the base model a go - I can deal with the hard drive, it's just the 8GB of RAM that worries me as intend to use for large spreadsheets / data modelling...
Dang dude keep coming back to your channel awesome stuff!
Thanks mate, strangely enough I used to watch your videos a while back (assuming you are the Serge!?!) are you still making content?
I'd like to think that they intentionally changed the placements of the ports to easily identify which is which. Those 2 are basically identical.
I have a surface pro 7 16gb i7 and honestly the performance of these laptops arent worth the price. The fans kick on just using the web browser and struggles to do much else. The tablet experience is nonexistant considering the lack of apps on windows that make the experience worth it. I bought an Alienware x14 laptop with an i7 rtx 3060 because i loved your review on it and that will replace my surface pro 7.
I actually have both the pro 7 and the pro 8 at work and the heat management of the 8 is loads better. The 7 gets hot by just using one note or browsing as you said. The pro 8 doesn't seem to even break a sweat if I plug an ultra wide wqhd screen to the surface dock.
Thhats because the poor management of windos full of bugs in the proceses in tasks.. you can evently fix those one by one with regitry editor cuz the fucking windows runs apps in the background even if youre not needing them.. and if you open explorer the processor starting fire
Thats the window is what it is
@@iuliuvlad563 i believe it because back when i had windows 7, it was fine till i had windows 8 and every update had me fixing a different issue so my surface pro had updates every time i had to use it which is fustrating. so far, windows 11 on my new laptop has no issues and works flawlessly. it looks cleaner and has less updates than previous windows.

Thanks for the comparison. I went with the 9 because i just have to have the latest tech. How do you feel about them not releasing a new surface pro this year?
disappointed but with how boring the SLS and SLG were I am almost glad they didn't release it, maybe when we get Intels new CPUs which finally improve onboard graphics and architecture they will release a surface worth upgrading to
I would use a Surface Pro for recording in my studio. Are they both fanless? I can't have fan noise when recording.
They do have fan to cool down, and they kick in quickly even just browsing internet
@@Mr-Noro Ok thanks. That rules them out for me then.

The "button placement" alone is worth the upgrade 😂Thanks for mentioning that, so important!
Glad it helps 😀
Another great, quality video. Always looking forward to your reviews man.
Thank you mate 😃
I bought the Surface pro 8 i7, 16gb, the device would get hot on normal use such as youtube, MS word. the pro 8 reached a temperature of 106F (41C) My thought process was if its getting hot on a cold winter, how hot is it going to get on hot summer. I returned it and bought the SP pro 9 i5 16gb. so far its not getting any hot at all at normal use. its temperature has been around 80-85F (26C -29C)
Exchange for another if you're still within return time frame
What a nice video. I'm thinking about getting SP9 for daily work but, does it works good with Remot Desktop connections, outlook, teams and all that stuff?
hello! I am torn between the two: surface pro 8 i7 vs surface pro 9 i5. If same price, which item you recommend to get?
I got my Microsoft-refurbished Surface Pro 8 for under 500 euro. Great value for the money, love it.
On the downside it is quite heavy for a tablet, and also very very shiny.
you can get screen protectors that provide antiglare coating
Is 256GB enough? If yes then going for Pro 8 seems like a better decision to save some money. any advice? I do have the 1TB one drive and also 2TB google drive plans. So, in that situation would you recommend going for 256GB?
Go with 256, replace the card yourself.
@@TripleE76 thanks. I bought the 512 GB from Microsoft directly

The Perfect video. This is a guideline for any TH-camr on how compare 2 products. Congrats
Uh this seems like they cost reduced the 9. If it’s a choice of i7 between the two the 8 seems to be the way to go. I’m biased because I have an 8 and the processor does everything I need it to do. The generations between these two aren’t wide enough to make a tangible difference.
I think Microsoft should have added an extra Thunderbolt on the Surface Pro 9 (3 Thunderbolt), if the headphone jack was removed.
Thank you mate
Now bring back the fanless version, the card reader and the headphone jack on the Surface Pro 10 please! My i5 SP5?(The one without a number) is now down to about 60% battery capacity and my 3rd keyboard is hanging on to a thread. But I am seriously leaning at replacing it with a SP7+ still... I'd love the new screen and speakers, and don't really care about the money side of things, but the above is really important to me. But I don't want to buy old tech. Aarrghh!!!
Thank you guys. Much appreciated (and needed!).
The SQ3 model actually don’t have USB4 ports, they are just USB3.2
thanks for a nice review.
Thank you mate, I appreciate the feedback, it can be very hard trying to cater a comparison for everyone so your info will help for future comparisons.
hi, i am office user and i also watch media. Which one would you recommend for me? Thank you
for your use either would be amazing so it comes down to price (8 should be cheaper) if you need a headphone jack (9 doesn't have one) and colour choice as 9 has more options :)
I liked your video very much. I've seen many, but your video shows most of the information. The internals comparison was also super helpful. thanks
Glad it was helpful! :)
I'm satisfied with slim pen2 so I won't consider V3 now, but I want to know if I use Pro10(165u) and 4060ti(egpu) to play games like Forza Horizon5,will it perform better than my current gaming laptop with Ryzen 4800H and 3060 laptop?
really looking forward to the egpu testing! just puchased a SP8 and want to get an EGPU
My egpu is working great on my SP8 but nothing I have tried can get my SP9 to work! I know others have had some success but I haven't yet :(
What is the name of the powerbank you used in your video?
I absolutely need a headphones jack. To my ears, 8 sounded better. To my eyes, 9 visuals were better. Going for the 8. Appreciate your thorough review.
Glad it helped. I ended up returning the 9 and keeping my trusty 8!
Don't have either device but the 9 doesn't seem like an update at all.. Better CPU and that's it..
If the actual battery time was real, it would be great! My SP8 lasts about 4 hours on a full battery... Only down for me.
Thank you for your in-depth review. It has been very helpful. I've been looking for a suitable laptop or tablet for school now and it looks like the Surface Pro 8 will be perfect for my needs and, like you said, be much more cost effective than the Surface Pro 9. Cheers mate
When is the egpu test coming?
It was a disaster. I have had nothing but problems with the sp9 to the point I had to abandon the video, sorry
Does surface Pro 9 have flickering/Ghosting and battery drain issue?
Any updates on the egpu performance tests?
a couple of things. 1. there's no way you're getting 7 hours of battery from normal use. have a read of reddit. 2. you do need headphone jacks because 95% of the people in my office (about 60 staff) use wired headphones for teams and whatever else. yes most of them have BT headphones when they leave, but in the office, almost everyone uses wired headphones. i use wired headphones in and out of the office.
Are you sure firmware update has enabled vrr because I don't have it yet and mines updated af
No headphone jack on the 9 is a big negative. If I'm buying one, I'll go for an 8
Totally agree being a dj that’s the reason I will go for the 8 with the headphone jack,I don’t know why Microsoft tek off the jack on the 9 ,makes no sense
Great review/ Personally. I hate the Alcantara finish and the flat pen. Still, I love the concept
of this product which has been validated by the evolution of the ipad
Can it support autocad? 🤔
If yes, I'm considering buying this instead of rog g14.
G14 will be much better, its got much more powerful cpu and a descrete GPU
Spot on. I would want dedicated gfx if using cad
@@NoName-bg2om thanks
@@MashITTech thanks

Geat review. One questions that I have is the fan noise. I have Surface pro 6 fanless that work great still.
Yes sorry I put fan noise in the original reviews but stupidly forgot that section in this comparison! They both have fans but the fans are much more pleasant than the old SP4-7 i7 versions if you have heard those
$500 difference, surface pro 8 for sure. Plus It even has a headphone jack.
Pro 9 for $1400 isn't worth it IMO.
Yep, I am not trading my pro 8 in for a 9 for sure!
Depends on how much you need for performance and battery life. If the Intel 11th gen CPU is sufficient enough and you don't mind using chargers, then Surface Pro 8 is the better pick.
If performance matters because you are fighting for a work promotion, then the Surface Pro 9 could give you an edge.
One thing I missed. Are the keyboards from Microsoft for the surface Pro 8/9 are with lights or backlit?
Yes, all surface pro keyboards are backlit

Hmmn I want a surface pro Device I'm long overdue. I'm not sure if I should get one or another tablet.
My buddy gets Microsoft discounts so I would get a 256gb and upgrade few weeks later. Ces 2023 is showcasing new stuff now.
I'll probably check out lenovo,Asus,etc..
Still usings a Dell Inspiron 1545 from that I got back in 2009. At this point anyhting is better than what im using atm.
should be one port on each side and not both on one side
Yeah, that would be so much more useful
I assume there are design engineering reasons for these changes which make the 9 a bit more efficient. For example, grouping the ports reduces the amount and complexity of wiring inside.
I have a surface 4,with surface 4 keyboard and Microsoft stylus. Do either of those work with the surface 8 or 9?
no

We had the first RT's, right up until the Pro 8 (bulk used were Pro 4's). Disappointed they're still using the Surface Connect Port, which they really should replace with another USB-C and help standardise charging.....not to mention that their chargers are totally over priced (plus the V2 Dock added another £100 to the price over the original Dock). As a business, the other issue was repairs, which only gives you the option to send off in the post, when compared to other manufactures offering next day onsite repair. Don't get me wrong, they're nice bits of kit (I'm typing on my Pro 7), but not fanatically durable over time, which is another reason we're now moving away from them.
i want to see ProX Vs Pro 9 pls 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂 ?
Thx for an honest review.
Looks like pro 9 is more like pro x design wise
The true upgrade is the Surface Pro X (SQ2 Arm) to Surface Pro 9 5G (SQ3 Arm)
Have been using the Surface Pro 9 5G for nearly a week now, and so far it performed doing general office applications, Internet and light tasks on LTE quite well with good battery life. However Microsoft still needs to work more on that emulation/translation layer instead relying on devs to port things. My HEAVY use of the Surface Pro 9 5G Arm running many applications/programs often so far:
+ Outlook - Naturally when using a tablet on the go
+ OneNote - Note taking is a massive reason for tablets
+ Edge - Chrome I feel is too much of a system hog, if it were Linux I'd be using Firefox, but Edge seems ok so far.
+ Dowload managers - Jdownloader, Utorrent
+ LTE & Blue Tooth - Phone link, Surface Pen, ear buds
+ 60~120 dynamic refresh rate - ought to have 1htz for always on displays
With all these things running on performance mode, I only got around 7 hours of batter until it hit 10% than I had to recharge.
- SQ3 still has some ways to go to match both the M iPad Pro's power and battery life.
- Microsoft still needs to refine a lot of the touch and gestures of Windows 11, especially in Portrait oriention, if the Surface Pro is to be the tablet king (It is first and foremost meant to be used as a tablet with the laptop abilities being there when placed down with a keyboard)
Found some non-powerful but essential applications dissapointingly unable to be installed such as Super Display - connects any Samsung device via wireless or cable to act as a second monitor to the Surface Pro 9 5G.
+ Thinner
+ Lighter
+ No need for those air vents, because it doesn't need fans like the Intel chips
please tear down surface 8..... there isnt any video from it

Great review, any chance you may make a similar review but with Linux installed on the MS Surface Pro 9?
I don't understand why people don't buy headphones with the newer connector (USB-C) instead of using the extremely outdated 3.5mm that is becoming more and more obsolete. What am I missing?
