    Many decades ago, I played chess by mail with a guy in France. It was way before the internet and cell phones, and long distance phone calls were so expensive back then. We would each mail our next move in an envelope via the postal service. It took about a month for me receive his next move and a month for him to receive my next move via the mail. A game took about 14 years.

    @8:54 The puzzle answer Rook capturing the b7 pawn so King has to capture to avoid checkmate. Now knight can go d6 for fork winning queen.

  • @RonCraig
    @RonCraig 3 ปีที่แล้ว +408

    The best move is R×b7. If K×b7 then Nd6 fork and the sweety is gone. White can easily promote to queen.
    If king doesn't capture then the black queen has to sacrifice itself otherwise Nc5 is checkmate.
    Additional point : After R×b7, if queen captures knight, first R×a7 check and then d×e4.

    8:59 puzzle solution is 1. R×b7. Its now forced to take the rook otherwise mate with Nc5 on the next move can't be stopped and if black takes the rook 1. ...K×b7 we go for 2. Nd6+ forking the King and the Queen, a Royal Fork. If black eliminates the knight woth 1. ...Q×e4, then simple gain another pawn with 2. R×a7+ followed by d×e4 and white is completely winning.

    Solution for the puzzle:
    1)Rxb7 :- Black is forced to take the rook which results in Nd6+ forking the King and the Queen thereby winning the game(because after that the Knight goes to f6 attacking black's h pawn and white's g pawn is unstoppable).
    2)If Black plays any other move then Nc5# is a mate(Inorder to stop the mate you have to capture the Knight with the Queen which again leads to the above option).

    The best move is R×b7, if king takes Rook then the knight goes to d6 and forks the king and queen. And you are winning. If any other move then Nc5 mate. If black tries to eliminate the knight by capturing with the queen. Don't straight away capture the queen. But you can gain one more pawn by first R×a7+. After king takes Rook you capture the queen. And the black pawn cannot promote because of the white king. And also you are up 2 pawns. So white is completely dominating this endgame.

    The answer is : Rook into b7.
    The Idea is if king takes the rook, then Nd6 is a folk.
    And if King doesn't move and moves his queen, then Nc5 would be a checkmate because B file is covered by rook, A5 square is protected by the pawn. And also Queen can't defend it.

      @@ChessTalk I got a big thing to say here. Not an easy puzzle though.
      Of course, Rxb7 is answer, threatening Nc5# . If Kxb7, then Nd6+ and we win the queen and the game.
      But black has one desperate try. He can either play Qf8 or Qc6. After Nc5+, Qxc5(forced). Then bxc5. Next black had to play Kxb7. Then the most important move to play which is d4. We shouldn't take the pawn because black plays Kc6 and after Kc2, he plays Kxc5 and we play Kc3 and this is a well known draw. After we play d4, black plays Kc6. Now we play Kc2. Black plays Kd5. Finally we play Kc3. And one last moment of the game. If black plays a5, then we play a3. And once he pushes a4, we play the star move g5. And black has to move the king, we take the pawn on c4 with our king and two connected passed pawns is winning.Great puzzle sir!

    RE: GAME THAT TOOK 14 YEARS. I've been getting quite a few enquiries. My chess opponent in France, many decades ago, before the internet, like myself, would mail our next chess moves in an envelope sent through the post office. It would sometimes take 3 or 4 weeks for either of us to receive the others next move. My opponent, an artistic Frenchman, would often make drawings of his next move, instead of just writing down what his next move was. I got his letter one day postmarked from France. I enthusiastically opened it, wondering for weeks and weeks what his next move would be. When I unfolded the piece of paper it said "CHECKMATE." I had to laugh, I remembered my last move and he was in trouble, and I anticipated sending him a note proclaiming CHECKMATE very soon. I hurried to the drawer where I kept the thick stack of our moves and looked at the one on top. He drew it with a pencil instead of writing out his move in words. There was a long debated disagreement about what piece his crude drawing pictured. Needless to say, it was more a stalemate, than a checkmate. We argued back and forth on this through the US and French mail. Snail mail from that far away. Long distance phone calls wefe very expensive and out of the question. We had already spent a small fortune in postage stamps. "The chess piece I drew was this; and that piece drawn was clearly that" he claimed. It looks way more like "that" than "this" I strongly protested. The argument went on for 20 months. 23 heated letters back and forth between him in France and myself in the United States. We finally agreed to let an unbiased impartial judge decide on who won, to end this nearly decade and a half marathon chess match. We finally agreed on a man from Copenhagen to be the judge to decide it. At first we considered a man from Sri Lanka to be the judge. He sent us his picture, and we decided against him, seeing that he wore glasses. Then we considered a man from Switzerland (a nice NEUTRAL country) who lived in a chalet in the Swiss Alps. But his fondness for Impressionistic paintings put us off on him. We finally decided on the man from Copenhagen to be the impartial judge "If only I had been a little better artist" the Frenchman thought. "If only he had been a little better artist", I thought. The much anticipated letter from Copenhagen with the decision, arrived in the US mail about a month later. It seemed the longest 4 weeks of my life. Springtime had already sprung "This is it" I thought, as I unfolded the letter. "Here it is; this is it." I closed my eyes tightly shut for a full minute, and hoped to the heavens for a favorable ruling. I opened my eyes slowly, and looked at the letter The judge had rendered his decision...... It was a draw. It was declared a tie. After 14 years and 8 months; it was declared a tie. Drats !!
    I sense that some of you have found this amusing. Ticklish... Without Feathers - W. Allen.

    I've been playing Chess for a year now. And I had stagnated at 1400s. I was missing the center control strategy. Some of the more experienced would gain from this as well. Thank You.

      Also the London System offers better defense when one chooses an aggressive attack on the King's side instead of castling. Love it!!!

    My answer to the chess puzzle
    Rxb7, whatever black plays after that move puts him in zugzwang. Hence, if Kxb7 then Nd6 forks the couple and if king does not capture rook then it is curtains for black because of Nc5#

    I'm always happy to see these. I feel comfortable in most Queen's gambit positions but don't really go for anything else. Sometimes a London but idk it too well. With black, I can do a Queen's Indian or King's Indian but idfk what to do with it once I place the bishop, knight, 2 pawns, and castle. Lol

    Puzzle- 1. Rxa7 Kxa7 2. Nd6 forking the king and queen,let's assume he got that fork and play any other move that Nc5 is beautiful checkmate.

    Chess Puzzle answer:
    Rxb7 threatening Nc5#
    If Kxb7 then Nd6+ and anywhere Black's king goes, we simply gobble up the queen(Nxe8)
    If Qf8 then Nc5+, Qxc5 is forced, then bxc5 and it's completely winning
    If Qxe4, then Rxa7+, Kxa7, and axe4, we are still winning as we are a pawn up

  • @jadengoldsmith5253
    @jadengoldsmith5253 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best move would be to move pawn to A4 and leave the black to decide what to do.
    Moving the queen is more feasible option for black. If he doesn't, then knight goes to C5 and Rxb7 check mate
    If queen takes A4, then knight can fork and take the queen.
    Best option for black to avoid a checkmate will be to sacrifice queen for the knight or rook; or both (if queen is played to cover b7)
    In every other possibility, it's either a checkmate, or a queen sacrifice, or both.

  • @mamonighosh7032
    @mamonighosh7032 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Solution to the puzzle.
    1. Rxb7
    2. Kxb7
    3. Nd6+ to pick up the queen.
    But if Qxe4, then der and after king takes rook, white can storm with the pawns and win the game.

    N c5 check. K b6 to protect the check and R b7 is the checkmate move.

  • @nidhikapoor3794
    @nidhikapoor3794 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The puzzle answer Rook capturing the b7 pawn so King has to capture to avoid checkmate. Now knight can go d6 for fork winning queen.
