    In this episode
How Scott used geometric patterns to master the fretboard.
The clues he picked up from Gary Willis.
How you can unlock your own fretboard knowledge.
Where you can check out the SBL Fretboard Accelerator.
    And much, much more!

For anybody who is on the fence of joining or not joining the fretboard accelerator, here is my personal experience with it:
This accelerator was the first thing I purchased ever from SBL, I was also not yet a member of the academy itself. I was playing bass for years already but as Scott says in this episode, I also had no real clue where any of the notes were etc etc... so I joined this accelerator, worked through some of the quite (mentally) painful exercises, especially for augmented and diminished as you just encounter "normal" major and minor much more frequently in songs, and I just have to say that it opened a new world on this instrument for me, which is kind of embarassing to me now, that I struggled with learning anything about the fretboard for such a long time (I won't admit how long I played bass without knowing the fretboard 🥴) . I have to be a little more consistent with practicing this, still, so yeah it really depends on how much work you put into this and really going through exercises some minutes every time you pick up the bass.
Anyway, long story short. This course is worth the money if you are a bass player of any level who wants to learn the fretboard, man. Thank you Scott 😄 Oh and doing this accelerator made me join the regular SBL membership right away because my brain is just longing for more input since then. Just my little input, hope this helps anybody.

I have done Technique Accelerator and Fretboard Accelerator. After years of doing my own thing (64years) I am loving getting to grips with all this stuff. I'm not very fast but I think I have a good groove and these courses are "TAKING ME TO THE NEXT LEVEL"

Thanks for sharing your journey in such an honest and genuine way. I signed up this year and it’s definitely worth it. I’ve been playing for 40+ years and know my fretboard fairly well, and at least for the 1st inversion major triads I knew the shapes pretty well too. But I didn’t think of the fretboard as a map and geometry as the key to linking it all together. But even so, I’ve learned so much just by working through the 1st and 2nd inversions, splitting up the fretboard, and getting really fluent at all the combinations. Visualize and vocalize. I’ve done other courses and became a lifetime SBL member many years ago, and they’ve all helped me move to a higher, more exciting level of my playing and fluidity. It’s a great system, and worth every penny, probably no matter what your abilities or genres.

You're such an upstanding and honest guy, Scott. Have learned so much from you. And since I heard that you have tried out the carnivore diet I really got excited as I've been carnivore myself for about five years. I'm 63 and I never felt better! And my "fretboard memory" has excelled, too. Cool, right?

Right on! Also am a big fan of buying nice expensive couches only to find it more perfect sitting on the floor . My dad did it and I do it. Sitting on the floor is my happy place, combine that with playing bass ❤

I love it when you make a podcast alone and bring it back to the bare essential. Just you, a camera, a mic and your thoughts. And I like the Fretboard Accelerator, it is going to help me the rest of my life.

I don’t like a whole podcast episode being used basically as a sales pitch for this course. But I will say I’ve done the fretboard accelerator and it is definitely a worthy investment.
I just really love the podcast as a Scott and Ian (and sometimes guest) conversation and not extra info on a course. But I’m only ‘upset’ because it means I miss out on a ‘normal’ episode so it comes from a place of loving what you guys do.
Love the pod - keep it up!

Thanks for sharing. It gives people encouragement to know that those who are great at this instrument also had their struggles.

I was 16 when I start playing guitar, went to Bass when I was 24, learned the fretboard when I was 35 😂😂😂 so no, 20/21 doesn't sound that bad

Separated at birth! I was always artistic and always struggled with learning the notes on the fretboard. Did my own fingerboard charts, no use whatsoever. I can play fine, can play fast, but even now (40 years on), I have to think really hard about what notes I’m actually playing whilst playing. It’s never been easy for me. Same way I used to be the one who sat in recorder class and struggled to sight read. And yet I can create a melody and harmonise over and over it completely spontaneously. Go figure. 🤷‍♂Everything is instinctive to me. I wish I was better at the math side though! I wrote a song a while back, had no idea what the chords were, had to actually look them up afterwards and there was some weird stuff in there. But without knowing what the chords were called, I knew what notes (in terms of sound) they needed to contain. I know musicians who use the math first and some who can’t do it without knowing the math, but I’m just not like that.

Does Fretboard Accelerator cost make you a member of SBL lessons, or is this additional? Thanks for all the great videos.
