    I must be getting old, that is extremely fast for a train and a huge responsibility. That lady was so calm and she passed those suburban commuter trains like they were standing still. Im from NYC and this is obviously a long distance passenger train the british equivalent to our national Amtrack trains.

      A far faster and superior train to the national Amtrack trains

      Vincent M probably comparable to the Acela in terms of required infrastructure, although it’s a much older and diesel-powered train. UK was prepared to invest in its intercity passenger network in the 1970s-90s, US unfortunate was not.

      The famous & much loved Intercity 125 HST a diesel train capable of speeds of up to 148 MPH, fastest diesel passenger train in the world, although it's ''allowed top line speed in the uk was 125 MPH, started in 1975 & basically retired this year all apart from Scotland. Sad to see them go - they were brilliant! Shame about the Hitachi plastic crap on wheels we have now instead! :-(

    Welwyn Viaduct, (AKA Digswell Viaduct) which we cross at 06:02 spans the valley of the river Mimram. The viaduct was completed in 1850 and over 12 million bricks were used in its construction. From memory I think that this whole section of the line was built under the control of top Victorian Railway contractor Thomas Brassey. The viaduct was considered one of the wonders of the Railway age and for a while it was a tourist attraction in its own right. Queen Victoria herself took the train from London to see the viaduct, though she refused to cross it in the train! She got off the train at Hatfield and took a coach and horses to the other side of the viaduct - admiring the viaduct from a distance. She rejoined the royal train at Old Welwyn station.
    As you can just see at 06:20 having crossed the viaduct, trains flashes through Old Welwyn station. Despite the name it bears, the station is actually located in the village of Digswell and is almost a mile from the very pretty village of Old Welwyn.
    After the station (just visible at 06:22) the line then runs into the first of the two Welwyn Tunnels. These tunnels take the line under the high ground between Digswell and Woolmer Green. Sadly, there was a major two train accident in the northernmost of these tunnels in 1866 when a coal train and an empty goods train collided. Two railwaymen lost their lives there and the resulting fire in the tunnel had to be left to burn itself out, which took two days. Of course the death toll would have been far greater had the trains been passenger trains - a fact not lost on the Victorians, who immediately installed new safety precautions around that location.

    Those wonderful diesel engines not only providing immense power but also reliability. That route pushes the engines hard and for long periods of time. They also sound good too!
    Quite surreal to see the true view of what a driver sees. Being placed at the front of 100s of tons of metal and flying over points. All the while, the drivers sit relaxed and incredibly focused.

    I drove in this very route in a Train Simulator. So interesting to compare the game with a real video. Thank you.

    These HST 125 diesel trains were designed and built by "the railway" and gave excellent service over many years. We got many miles out of this design.

    She's a happy train driver. Can't see why they cant punch a 300 kmh TGV class train down that line. You can drive your car faster down the autobahn. Still 200 kmh (125mph) was the rating on the original Japanese shinkansen in 1964

    • @EXSKIN
      @EXSKIN 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And how fast do TGV's go on the french conventional railway system. you know when they come of the purpose built high speed bits. yes you can drive down the Autobahn faster but 70 mph motorway limit here. And again the bullet train purpose built high speed lines so your point is ?.

    • @EXSKIN
      @EXSKIN 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your right there when my 325 unit could only get up to 85 ish, as there was a eurostar in the same overhead section.

    • @johnsergei
      @johnsergei 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The running speed of the Shinkansen was a bit faster than 125 MPH in its early years, but it also ran on track,built especially for high speed & the O series EMUs that rain it had every axle powered. A Pendalino or the new stuff would be competitive but by the time the Intercity 125 or 225 got going, an O series Shinkie would be gone. Tokyo - Osaka times,though the 60s,70s & 80s would've been roughly midway between ECML/WCML express times now the upcoming High Speed 2.

      Mucho movimiento de cámara pa distintos sitios y corte

    • @86501freightliner
      @86501freightliner 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the ECML doesn't have the cab-signalling required to exceed 200kmh. I reckon the actual signalling-blocks themselves might also be too short.
      Also, don't forget that this is NOT a dedicated high-speed route, it's a conventional upgraded line. InterCity services still have to mix with slower regional, commuter, and freight services.

    Not bad for barely three quarters of the route. Having stations etc listed would not have helped because we did not see quite a few of them eg Arlesey cut to driver cut to Biggleswade cut to Little Barford power station.

      Yep, an HST Class 43. This one is running at 125MPH. They are fairly quiet in the cab considering the 2250 HP V16 MTU engine just behind the bulkhead behind the driver.
