Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow, known as Donald Starring in Maui Mallard in Europe, is a platform game of 1995. The game was developed by Eurocom and published by Disney Interactive.
What caught our attention, besides the quality of the game is the ability to control Donald Duck in two distinct styles of gameplay. Addressing a content a bit macabre, unlike standard on other Disney games, Cold Shadow managed to surprise the players who saw the Disney games with exclusivity and easy child. On a tropical island, the idol Shabum Shabum disappears. Shabum Shabum is considered the guardian spirit of the island, and unless the idol is recovered, the whole island will explode. The detective Maui Mallard ("interpreted" by Donald Duck) is called on the island to discover the whereabouts of the idol, and his investigations lead him to a haunted mansion. Going forward, he finds a strength training Ninja, where a wizard gives you Ninja skills. So Maui goes the power to transform into Cold Shadow. Besides the normal stages the game also features bonus stages called Babaluau Baby, all take place in a theater and the goal is to get all the fireworks.
The soundtrack of game is composed by Michael Giacchino. Giacchino is known for working on the soundtrack for films such as "Ratatouille," "The Incredibles," Up", "Mission Impossible III" and on the soundtrack of the series as "Lost"and "Fringe". For the North American versions of the game, all Donald Duck references are omitted for unknown reasons and the main character is only known as Maui Mallard.
With beautiful graphics, music and more, Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow is another good platform game for SNES. A sequel was planned, but factors like low popularity and the fact that it was launched in 1996 at the end of SNES, meant that these plans were shelved. I wish this game had continued. Maybe one day!

They really went HARD with this era of licensed games in 90's. To this day the animation and pixel art of this game still impresses me. Perfect use of smear frames and stretch and squash. Indie devs making pixel art games could learn a ton from this title. On top of that the soundtrack was fantastic.

Indie devs saw Earthbound and thought that was the pinnacle of pixel art. We'll never get a retro-style game as atmospheric as this one...

Simply Pure Love! in the form of colorful graphics, awesome gameplay and level design. we will never forget the real good times, like when we were kids.
This is great. I don't remember seeing this one before, but those sprites are gorgeous. Some of the effects sound like sounds from Zombies Ate My Neighbors, itself an amazing game from the 16-Bit era.
Damn...this was the first game i tried to beat when i was 7/8 years old at 1998/99 in my cousins pc... unfortunately my cousins pc was broken and i remember dropping the game at level 6 in the water.Amazing times
It's not just the pixel art and numerously creative sprites that's amazing about this game. The sound effects and music are so on point, it makes you wonder to this day what else the SNES was capable of at it's full potential. Definitely a gem on the SNES
Beat this game during the summer as a kid over two decades ago. Those were some good times.
soundtrack hits right in the nostalgia. Wasnt my favorite snes game but I did borrow it from a friend multiple times.
My friends and I played this. Saving the game progres codes on paper and coming back to it. I actually didn't play it much alone and it took us all a couple years or something to beat it with constant trial and error and frustration and failors. But the day we beat it was a well deserved reward.
I hope that Donald's ninja alter ego, Cold Shadow appears in the future Kingdom Hearts games! That would be awesome! 🐱👤🎮

I have never seen this game before. However, I have played Mickey Mania on the Sega Genesis(which has a SNES counterpart). It looks like Donald shares some poses, jumps, and movements as Mickey, from that game.
Man, the Megadrive sound and looked better than the snes.
I have never played this game, but have the faintest of memories seeing it at my local Wherehouse. Now that I’m watching footage of this game decades later, I’m kicking myself for not checking it out.
It remembers me Hercules, both games have same dinamics...

The music in this game is phenomenal, and the colors absolutely pop on this version, and best of all, this saw US release, meaning more people actually got to play the damned thing.

There is a stage in the game (4-3) that requires some deaths to get all the jewels.

@@shredderorokusaki3013 This is Donald, for some reason they didn't call the game Donald Duck in Maui Mallard in the US. The Genesis version has the name, but was only released in Europe, had it been released here, it would've had the same name change fate. Plus listen to when Donald gets hits, or changes into his ninja alterego, Darkwing Duck doesn't sound like Donald Duck. Do a little research next time.
OMG I've played this game until I was like 4 since then I traded all my Super Nintendo games for Different One's like Power Rangers and Yoshi's island and Mario World which was a good decision but I I couldn't remember the games I owned before that. Besides Lion King. So I thought this was a Dark Wing Duck Game for the longest time until I tried searching for it online but then I couldn't find it anywhere. All I remembered was that it was a Duck Like Character and that it was a long scrolling one and that there was a organ. AND I Remembered so much!! I'm pretty proud of my memory! \^O^/

i prefer the sega version of it cause the music is alot better amd doesnt have unnecessary censorship, but the game is great regardless xD
What censorship? Music being better? Nonsense, this has much more instrumentation in it's music, something FM Synth, as much as I love it, can never replicate. You also have to remember, the Sega version was only ever released in Europe (which has the biggest biased hard on for anything Sega I have ever seen), had it been released in the US, and it WASN'T (I don't count Sega channel, it was not physical media, and was likely just the European ROM anyway), it would've gone under a similar name.
You Sega nerds are just as bad as the Nintendo nerds, if not worse. Just be happy that the 16 bit era gave us two consoles, and great games between them.
