  • Subscribe, as I will be doing an entire fall (cool crop) garden series for 2022. I start with peas and carrots first. They love the cool weather but enjoy the end of summer heat to germinate, establish and get going before the cool weather rolls in. I cover planting peas and carrots, soil, fertilizing, spacing, and depth.

Please gardener friends, please put your zone number in title or description. We all know this matters on plant timing and these videos are a dime a dozen these days but most videos do not contain this vital time saving info at a glance that could be put in easily without explanation.
Your videos are definitely better where you start out with that info 20 seconds in so thanks for including that very quickly.

If I'm able, next year will be a banner year for me in my garden. I've never done succession planting or cool crop planting. I also plan to do canning. The knowledge and encouragement you share help me tremendously in maintaining hope and confidence to make this happen. Winter will be full of rewatching your videos over and over again. Thanks for your hard work, Gary, and for sharing it all with us. Good health and happiness to you and everyone you love!

Good afternoon from Coastal Georgia Zone 8B!
I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe during this pandemic crisis.
I’ve been harvesting pole beans, black eyed peas, and purple hull peas. The summer heat was very harsh on my squash and zucchini, but I was already started seed indoors for my fall garden. I’ve also started cabbage seeds as well.
I’ve been e joying sugar baby watermelons, delicious tomatoes and cucumbers! Oh boy!!! DELICIOUS!!!
It felt so good to harvest the first watermelon from my summer crop. It’s a beautiful volunteer vine that produced a 36.8 pound watermelon! There are still 6 more that are still growing on the vine.
I will have to share the picture on the Facebook page!
Thank you, Gary, for sharing so much valuable gardening information for us gardeners who are still learning to grow our own food.
    Wishing everyone a blessed day!!!

I haven't had much luck with Danvers, I'm lucky if I get 20 percent germination, watering daily to keep the soil moist until they are established. New Kuroda do better, and Purple Dragon, Kyoto Red, and Uzbek Yellow do surprisingly well with nearly every seed germinating. The rutabaga seeds and turnip seeds have all sprouted and the seedlings are doing well. It is too hot in Alabama, zone 7B for peas. I'm going to wait two more weeks to plant them. Golden Sweet, and Oregon Green sprout faster, and mature quicker than sugar daddy. I have the beds cleared and ready, just waiting and hoping for cooler weather. My first average frost date is Halloween, so I have a little more time. I just cleared out my zucchini and sowed Lemon Squash, and Yellow Scalloped Squash to replace them. I should have time to sneak in a harvest, or two, or three. I'm looking forward to fall and winter gardening, using low tunnels for frost protection. I swear the summer heat is killing me. Fortunately, I can take refuge inside my trellis tunnel. It is a lot cooler inside it.

I've never planted for fall before. This year I really want to plant some different lettuces but particularly Romaine because my mom and I really like it. It's difficult at times to find it fresh in stores or the sell by date is coming up soon. Plus, once you open a bag it gets rusty overnight. Well, at the least the compost pile is thriving. I also want to plant some carrots this fall and maybe some peas. I especially want to plant some collards as I love them. Maybe some turnip greens if I can find the right seeds. I'm near the Atlanta area and it's still very hot here so I may wait toward the end of August to do anything. I've bought shade cloth if I need it, but usually September starts to cool down to the 70s at least and our first brisk and cool day will be about mid-October. I don't remember seeing frost on the ground last year until way into December, but that can be unusual. It's usually November for sure. Always look forward to your videos! Keep them coming!

If you are looking for turnip greens, and don’t have much of a need for the actual turnip root, check out Seven Top turnip greens (salad turnips) - their root is woody and inedible, but you get lots and lots of leaves! Just ordered some from Southern Exposure to try out.

Peroxide is cheap so you could spray the ground but spores float in air and hang on host weeds. So really its about treating the leaves of the squash early on.

Thinking about feeding my tomato plants when the rain stops. In the past week we have received some 10 inch of rain with 2 last night and another inch today more tonight. Tomatos love the rain but I noticed more blossom end issues when depleted by to much water. What blend would you recommend to kick up washed away fertilize areas. I currently have around 500 plants with hundreds of tomatoes already missing due to wildlife issues, I believe I've cured much of that issue but lower production and much of mid level is gone but plants are at six feet and I'm starting to win.

The edges of the bed dry out faster. I have to water more than once per day to get seeds to start. I end up over watering towards the center of the bed resulting in fungus gnat and aphid infestations. Unfortunately, I only get direct sunlight from around 2 pm to 5 pm while its in the mid 90 degrees. A few years ago I had amazing luck with peppers. All I seem to get, now, are infestations. My neighbors all started gardening on their patios and I am wondering if that is a part of it, as well.

Hi Gary, I think I have a cantaloupe vine growing very nicely but it doesn’t have any flowers yet. I live in Philadelphia (7b) and my frost date is Nov 11. Should I wait and see if it blooms or cut it down and try something else?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would wait. Sometimes flowers are slow in heat but you should make sure its cantaloupe if you can.If you dont see something in 10 days, I would be concerned.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Hi Gary, just giving you an update. I never got a flower on that big prickly mystery vine that looks like cantaloupe. Thank you for being such a great teacher, because my tiny garden is benefiting greatly from your advice! Have a great weekend.

Same here Alvin. I’m in 9b so we grow pretty much year round. Accordingly the stores don’t need to expedite a garden clearance.

@@MadTracker Got that right! I live in South County (9a) and the retailers for garden supplies is limited unless you want to travel, but who wants to spend the gas, right? So we are the mercy of the market, but with the techniques of how to build your own quality container mix as seen in this channel really do help to stretch the gardening dollar.

True but you would have to do this later in the year. Adjust off the info I gave you cause our season temps vary.
