If I could bring back only one smell from the 70s it would have to be the original Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo. Anyone who remembers it knows what I mean.

@@SusanChristmas Are you sure? I liked soft musk but after smelling it again (an avon rep had a bottle at a market/fair last summer) I thought to myself, wow - my body chemistry must have changed because that does not smell good! It's either that or the perfume was old or more likely, I've developed a fondness for more subtle perfumes. The one that never changed for me though was Gucci #1. Whenever I find a vintage bottle, no matter how old - it smells so good on me that both men and women ask me what I'm wearing. Now that I think about it, never mind - hope you find a bottle and it smells as good as you remember!

Wella Balsam shampoo and Suave Strawberry shampoo both smelled great. I also remember Dippity-Do styling gel had a distinct smell, as did White Rain shampoo and Aqua-Net hairspray. I loved Jovan Musk and Skin Musk by Bonne-Bell which are still around today. There were also these big plastic tubes of lip gloss by Bonne Bell that smelled like various kinds of candy or soft drinks. I loved two in particular, Orange Crush and Dr. Pepper. Cover Girl liquid makeup had its own smell, but I haven't used that in decades so I don't know if its the same or not. Whte school paste that came in a plastic jar with a brush on the lid smelled kind of minty and is probably why some kids tried to eat it. Mucilage glue reminds me of middle school art class, as does tempera paint. Mimeographed papers, rubber cement, and Liquid Paper correction fluid remind me of high school. My three favorite scents that can transport me back to childhood are crayons, Play-Doh and old library books.

The old movie theatre I used to frequent in NJ had a urinal cake or cleanser that smelled exactly like that cereal and sick as it sounds, the smell brought me back to my childhood. As for Captain Crunch, the entire line was my favorite cereal. Still is. Beauty products and fragrances that I loved in the 70s: Eau De Love, Love’s Fresh Lemon, Jovan Musk, Slicker Lipstick, Cover Girl liquid makeup, Cornsilk face powder, Flex shampoo and conditioner, Jergen’s lotion. One toy that I recall having a distinct smell was a hard plastic Duncan Yo-Yo, fresh from it’s packaging. When the first mall opened nearby, I remember the smoky-cheesy aromas from Hickory Farms, and also the sweet smell of their dried banana chips. The 1970s malls also had at least one leather shop, the leather goods had quite a distinctive smell. Usually, there was also at least one pseudo hippy-stoner shop, selling posters, tie dye clothing, etc. Most of these shops also carried a large variety of incense and essential oils, certainly more scents than I had ever experienced.

As a kid, I used to play with something similar which was individually sold, not as a set, though, in 1980s to 1990s Manhattan Chinatown in NYC, bought outside from a stall across the street, from where my family had a buiness. We would play that for hours as kids with an adult next to us.

I was born in 1969, being a boy in the 1970's was my absolute favorite time ever ! I wouldn't trade it for anything. Girls had cooties, we had Big Wheels, skateboards, bikes we jumped to try to be like Evel Knieval, nobody wore a bicycle helmet or a seatbelt. 2nd hand smoke everywhere, Dad drank Budweiser while he was driving, it was legal if you weren't drunk, our gigantic Chevy Station Wagon. Mom with her Lemon Pledge wooden furniture polish is probably the smell I remember most, but I remember almost all of those. Thanks 😊 for bringing back great memories; kind of bittersweet. Everything seemed normal then compared to now. 🇺🇸

I remember those big Tide boxes the powder came in. Mom always bought the big Tide box. She loved it when one time Tide packed a towel in each of the big boxes. Mom loved that as we were so poor that the towels were more than welcome. Then brother and I would fight over who got to dig the towel out of the box. LOL
