Im an old mechanic and done a few of these before, for the NON AC vans you can get the heater matrix out from under the dash, no need to remove the whole dash. takes about 15 minutes to remove. remove glove box and center lower cover infront of gear stick. take off cabin air filter in engine bay, remove 3 bolts, that frees the fan. two bolts behind intake manifold in engine bay, these hold the heater box with matrix in. separate the clips that hold fan section to heater box and remove the fan side from under dash. then you can pull out heater box in direction of glove box.👍
I really appreciate all of your videos for the T4 Eurovan engine! I have a 96' Rialta and these are helping me so much! Can we ask for request if we don't see something? 😂
You can request, but I have no way of knowing what I work on each day or when requested work would come in the door. If you ever run into any issues, just ask a question under one of my videos. Provide details of the issue and what you've already done to try to solve it. Thank you for watching!
Hi, Thanks for posting, I have to do exactly that work to replace the blown out heater core. So far I just by-passed the bugger in front of the fire-wall and ran without it. regards,
Had an Audi 5000, heater core can be replaced through the engine compartment. It's a self contained box, bolted to the fire wall. Took me 2 hrs to replace and I'm just a weekend mechanic at best. This is lot work, removing the hole dash board.
Good stuff. One question - you mark the steering column just before you remove the steering wheel. Why? If the van isn't going to be moved while being worked on, is that necessary??
At the 8:58 "come on" point, can't see what you were doing inside that corner...but was that a mistake and you realized that the two screws in front needed to come out first or did you do something in that corner? Also, I've got a 97 T4 - what do I do since I don't have a glovebox, but instead an airbag?
I was trying to unplug the speaker wire... they can get stuck real well. The service manual will show how do disassemble the dash / airbag part of things.... for some reason, I have not yet had the pleasure to deal with one yet myself.
Go to: erwin.vw.com/erwin/ For $35 USD you can download as many service manuals (in pdf form) as you want, within a 24hr period ($35/24hrs). I've been known to download 8GB within that time frame (multiple vehicle platforms). The Bentley manuals are ok (I have $1500 worth), but this is a quicker & cheaper alternative.
Thanks! On their page, though, it reads: "There is a registration fee of $100.00 to get the credentials, and then there is a subscription of $500 per brand per year. You also need specific equipment." Maybe things have changed or I'm just not understanding their site?
what were the symptoms that led to this replacement? does the heater core just blow up and spill the coolant everywhere or was is because of lukewarm/cold air (could be just clogged too right?)
+Žanas Tumasonis The usual symptoms are coolant on the carpet, as well a windshield that steams-up as the coolant gets warm (also a coolant smell / sweet smell when the heater is on).
+Thomas EXOVCDS ok then mine's bad.... omg more stuff to do again. maybe I should also replace some coolant flanges/plastic connectors and or hoses, I remember reading somewhere that there's a few that fail, but not sure which ones, any idea? huge thanks for the videos, without them it would be hell. I'll donate soon.
+Žanas Tumasonis The core is easy to bypass if you do not have immediate time to change it. Simply splice the hoses together at the firewall (in the engine bay)... easy to spot, to the left of the coolant bottle. There are many hoses & plastic fittings / flanges that could be changed or weak (due to age) at this time. Replacing all would be overkill, but can ensure that you have most of the bases covered. However, when doing so, Murphy's Law will suggest that even after spending $$$ on a lot of parts & time... that a small, cheap & over-looked part, will leave you stranded some time later. I would only replace what you know is bad. Feel the hoses (replace soft & swollen). Don't touch plastic flanges unless you see signs of coolant leak... or they are easy to get at & change.
@@EXOVCDS You rock Thomas! I hope everyone can respect your work. By the way, I did a Ford Escape/Mazda L4 timing last year. (shitty Ford pulley design broke the cover ) and I noticed you were involved in that learning process over there. Hmmm..Thomas? Ah, he's the VW dude!

Yeah, I changed one of those a long time ago. Much easier... might have been an A6.

Great video! Can you do a video on Eurovan VR6 AXK timing chains replacement?
I record what I gets given to me... I can't say when a repair like that will fall in my hands. If you need info, I can supply that at any time.
Can you do a video, how to change the timing belt on the 93' T4 2.5L 5 cyl?
Sure, once I get one in the shop.
I have one booked for this Friday... as long as I get to work on it, you can expect a video shortly after.

Thx, looking forward to it.

Thanks very much...am about to drop the cash to get the Bentley manual. Did you do a video to show the repair of the blender doors, by chance?
No... I didn't record the fix. I do have another dash removal with better lighting I think. Search "EXOVCDS VW T4" to find all my T4 stuff.

Gone at 11:25. :-)
unfortunate that the watermark makes the video hard to watch, thanks anyway
Unfortunately... here's a better video. Thanks to great comments from viewers like yourself! Thank you!
