Susan was my mentor at Calarts. We had great conversations regarding not just art, but most anything. She was totally dedicated to her painting.

First time I associated Philip Guston to Susan. Love them both.

Such intriguing work, but PLEASE can we just stop perpetuating the myth that it's somehow glorious to martyr oneself for art by slowly poisoning yourself with toxic chemicals absorbed through your skin and lungs?

2005 ? presque 20 ans déjà. Susan a 60 ans lors de ce reportage et décédera en 2020. La fraicheur d'une petite fille qui cherche encore à s'améliorer avec un magnifique sourire.

True. Maybe this lady’s soul resides in her studio. I bet sometimes she actually sleeps there. I feel that her house is just useful.

I understand what she says as having a work ethic as an artist . The Southwest is silent and empty and you have to be able to self motivate and not go for inspiration or distraction outside your studio or getting impulses from others.
on the other hand i believe she became an alcoholic . 😊

I saw a studio on top of the house, made entirely of glass (retractable roof included). On the interior, a second set of glass windows that can be moved up and down. Paint(ings) on this second set of glass frames. The light smashed into bursts of colours.
My temples knew about the light of the Sun painting the world. The Templars kinda knew this with their stained glass cathedrals.

Sorry to hear you say this. Susan's comments were probably the most lucid and honest I've heard from an artist for a long time, especially from an artist of her stature. Her work ethic of just getting in there to the studio and doing something everyday is great advice for anyone in any discipline. I've been a fan of her work for years, especially the horses and though I may not like all her work, her philosophy and working attitude just makes sense.
