Thanks to Ray for supporting the Lakeland Amateur Radio Club for our special event station (W4S) at the 2024 Sun N' Fun airshow. He provided us with a complete IC-7300 station which was a big hit with the visiting hams. His staff was just great in working with us on the station. Danny WZ1P.
I missed the live session... I would have loved to ask about flat audio/9600baud data ability. After 7100 there are no other devices that support it. If IC5100 had support for it, even at an extortionate 650 euro I'd buy it. But alas, Yaesu it is. Also an occasional Motorola Waris. And not just for G3RUH. There is a bit of a renaissance with data experimentation with MMDMV-TNC supporting c4fsk ax25,, and other interfaces for m17 data packet mode, Vara FM WIDE(hate vara for not being open, but respect the speeds). This is shoving a head in the sand moment. Instead of offering full software defined I/Q to hams, they stick to sunken cost fallacy of d-star. I mean, by all means, keep d--star but do not slow down the progress please. Even the Quansheng K5/K6 with minimal mods detailed by Mobilnkd git page, has flat audio support with decently fast tx-rx recovery/go-around time.
I do understand where Ray is coming from since I work for a company that builds products made in the USA at about 2x the volume of Icom from what he was describing. I am a big fan of APRS and I do understand DPRS the main difference is to extend APRS you need a digipeater that much cheaper than a repeater for Dstar. So for normal events hams help on its good to know where everyone is and in remote areas that’s where APRS shines. Now in a city with lots of Dstar repeaters that could work well for voice and data at the same time.
And where exactly is a 7100 available for under $1k USD? And where is any coupon he is referring to? Best I can tell, the Icom website is unaware of this and the big three dealers don't seem to know the current price or know about the coupon, if this is true.
I would love to know from anyone if I'm missing something! I really would like to pick one up this month and would rather not spend $200 unnecessarily.
For your future segment on mobile radios in the shack: I've been using my FT-2800m since 2008 as a base radio for local nets. I've had more use out of it than my HT. I've had new hams with HTs try to join the local nets from inside a house. They would have done better with a mobile radio and a roll-up J-pole in front of a window. --Paul, KE5WMA
I'm lucky, I can see the tower our local club repeater is on from my walkout basement only 2.25 miles away. I can get in clear as day with my FT-60 and a signal stick.
The IC-375A 220 all mode radios are still if demand and fetch a premium price for a used(and OLD) radio. $1200+++ when the 275/475 2m/70cm versions go used for $400ish
DStar is icom. You have to purchase an icom to do DStar. ARPS is open source. All i need is a raspberry pi and a sound card and a radio with vox to do ARPS.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Actually there has been no coupon/rebate since its "rerelease", not even a penny discount at Dayton. I know because I had been eager to buy one in 2022 when it went out of production (when it was $999.99 with rebate) but after it came back in stock in 2023 for the higher price I wasn't willing to pay that for a >10 year old product 🙂
I don't know why Icom has been so stubborn on this, and refuses to implement APRS. APRS is something that many of us use, and beyond basic location. Just setup Dstar repeaters and then use DPRS is a dumb argument. It's why I don't own a Icom handheld, and almost didn't purchase the 705.

@@HamRadioCrashCoursei have yet to see that. In Europe especially, the price is 1.300-1.400 euros which comes to approximately $1400-$1500.
