I was in a grocery store wearing a military caped greatcoat. I was vaguely aware that I was being stared at, but that's pretty normal when you're in the dairy section wearing something that went out of style over a hundred years ago. What started to weird me out was the realization that a man was following me, but he stayed pretty far away and kept trying to make it seem like he wasn't following me, and wasn't watching me. After a bit, a woman finally caught up with him and they had a conversation, I could tell he was embarrassed, and he kept doing that little half hand wave to point me out while still trying to seem like he wasn't drawing attention to me. The woman looked exasperated and came right up to me and said, "My husband wants to know where you got the coat from and how much it cost." Turns out he did civil war reenactments and he was desperately in love...with my coat.

There is a girl in my nothing city who dresses like a perfect 40s film star. Hair , makeup , hats everything . She always brightens my day when I see her . Like a piece of art . And she is a bit of a celebrity because she stands out so much I have noticed her several times and mentioned seeing her to a coworker and she knew exactly who I meant.
I totally relate to the attention part! I'm used to it and I'm not. During a recent trip to Disneyland I wore a handmade dress (from a vintage pattern) and I got at least 50 compliments on my outfit or questions on where I got my dress. It got downright overwhelming, having multiple strangers (from different groups) at once coming up to compliment me! Then when they ask where I got my dress I felt bad saying it's handmade and not available to buy anywhere, because then they would gush more about how I must be talented to have sewn it! I know dressing this way means people will stare and comment, but I feel like saying "thank you" in response to a compliment isn't enough. As strange as it sounds, I think I could handle rude comments (which I have never gotten) better than being bombarded with compliments, because it's harder to react to compliments!

Neckbeard, you could also respond with something about how people that prefer to be trendy are just letting the fashion industry manufacture their opinion for them just to tell them their clothes are wrong in a month and have to go buy new clothes because they have no opinion for themselves. This is coming from someone with a degree in fashion design who absolutely hates the fashion industry. ;)
If you don't want to tell people it was hand sewn to minimize attention, tell them you bought it from a seller (whose name you don't remember) on Etsy! I tend to but my dresses on Etsy and people are usually okay with that explanation, and don't ask any follow up questions
Something nobody told me about wearing vintage : Irish charity/thrift shops are terrible, seriously almost every vintage blogger seems to have vintage gold mines in their local charity shops but the oldest thing I've ever found in a charity shop was 15 years old , even if I find something I like it's probably too big for me because most of the people who are donating clothes are Middle age women who are much bigger than me . But I'm hoping to get better at sewing to get more vintage style pieces . Sorry for the rant , I love your videos .
The US most stuff is divined, you can't go to a normal thrift store and expect anything older than the 1990s, finding hats, gloves and bags (which aren't very useful...) is easy because ever antique mall will have them. Finding actual vintage clothing will expensive, and depending on your area you might have to travel (more artsy cities will have more vintage clothing shops).
You're not alone! I don't own a single vintage piece, partially because the shops around here only have 90's and some 80's stuff, and I'm a plus size girl with a huge chest that wouldn't fit into most vintage stuff. I make about 85% of my clothes myself. Most major pattern companies sell reproductions of vintage patterns, and it's pretty easy to find true vintage patterns on Etsy. Also, circle skirts and gathered skirts are ridiculously easy to make, and are great staples for a vintage look! Just wanted to say you don't have to wear vintage to have a vintage look. My style is more or the New Look (now often referred to as Pinup) style, and I don't wear a single vintage piece, so it's totally possible without it! And making your own clothes is a very vintage thing to do!
It's also kind of weird that "vintage clothes" is considered a single, uniform category, when the clothes differ so much from one era to another. Like, someone who likes 1950s clothes wouldn't be likely to like 1970s clothes, etc. So when someone asks, "Do you like vintage?," I don't know what to tell them. It's just one of those overly broad categories.

Hint for lipstick staying, apply the lipstick liberally and blot regularly with tissue then put a translucent powder on, afterwards reapply the lipstick, blot, and powder. Final coat then blot should stay there all day
Lol. I’m starting to collect stamps. My grandma passed to be a journal of stamps as early as 1890s and I want to keep adding.☺️ I would love to do vintage. Edwardian dresses are my favorite, but I don’t think I could pull that of😂
One thing about vintage clothing is that it is typically available in one size - the size of the specific piece. If you know how to sew you might be able to reproduce it in your own size.
I've been in love with so many clothing styles, including vintage. I love the look of vintage and since last year I wear vintage clothes pieces too. I take elements from vintage, combine it with modern cloths and make it my own. It still has vintage details, but more modern. i could never be 100% vintage. It is just not me.
I find it interesting how you talk about the hairstyle element when that was one of the first ways I started learning about vintage style and wearing it myself. I would wear some of my modern clothes that when styled right are close to passing for vintage style, and pin curl my hair. I can't imagine trying to do vintage style without doing something with my hair??? I hope you have a lovely day!
I totally agree with so many of your points, most of them I wish I had known when I first started wearing vintage. Especially about getting attention, and the time it take to find and create your own vintage look. I am always amazed at how wearing vintage can make other people who see me so happy though.
Love this! Can totally relate to the end note about being known as the "vintage girl"- I've had big hair for the past 4-5 years and that's what I've been known for ever since. It's changed many times throughout my hair journey and is now significantly shorter than it used to be but is still just as big and poofy. I can't even go to Target without being recognized

I like wearing 1940s suits, unfortunately in Italy there aren't any due to the extreme poverty of our country during the war and under bombs so my best is dig in ebay or etsy looking for something on budget. And I found some nice pieces in USA in 120-180 $ range. My best was a 1940s pair of Nettleton shoes apparently never worn for 35$. Now I own 4 suits 1939-1948 and now, for everyday use, I'm adding some mid 1950s british suits, more wearable for today standards, they keep the style but not so flashy. To wear these, well, I usually wear suits in winter so I don't have summer suits due to its extremely high cost. In spring-summer I'm regular 1940s with khaki slacks and plaid shirt. The phrase that makes me angry? ooh very nice suit, so stylish...gangster?
i am far too tall to wear vintage clothes but i admire the effort that goes into this style of dress.

+a m a z o n I used to think that too, I was like "all these vintage ladies are so petite and it doesn't draw attention as much as a giant giraffe wearing a vintage hat" but I got over it. you just have to find the right kind of style! obviously finding original clothing is a pain as everything is either too short or has a waist near my armpits.
I'm trying to start wearing vintage, but I never go out unless I'm invited somewhere, and so it's always people I know, which is good, but the problem is it often seems overkill to wear it around them. Idk, I'm trying:)
You mentioned hating straight hair and that completely describes me! I won't leave my house without my hair curled or the lack of curls concealed by a back roll, hat or turban. It's actually the bane of my existence and I need to have a permanent. :P

You look great! When I was a teenager I was into vintage a lot, but people in Poland were staring at me and I did not like to draw attention , so I stopped wearing vintage clothes. Oh no! I wonder if the Renaissance way of wearing "lipstick" would also affect you like that? They used beet juice to stain their lips. Hope you're able to achieve your look either way.
I don't mind getting extra attention because of my clothes, but! getting attention because of my hair is problematic for me. I do very simple pin curls, because I'm still a newbie trying to make it work and I already see people staring at me. I always had plain hairstyles so now it's very uncomfortable for me. I try to curl my hair and at the same time style it in the way no one can notice a vintage vibe.
MargaretHagar Start taking people's stares as a form of compliment and appreciation for the time you took putting your look together. Nowadays, fashion and hairstyles don't require much, so seeing someone with their hair done, even if its simple, catches people's attention. I suffer from social anxiety and sometimes stares can be overwhelming but I always try to take it as a compliment, whether it is or isn't, for being one of the few who still believes in putting effort into creating a look, instead of just relying on the latest trend. It takes a lot of creativity and effort into developing a personal style, stop downplaying those wonderful qualities in you. If people are gonna stare, you might as well give them a good reason. ;)
there's one in Melbourne where I found this gorgeous kind of blush pink/burgundy 40s dress - but they're always way more expensive because they're a lot older, so harder to find, as well as more fragile :(
TOUCHÉ. When you look for vintage-styled items, you have to make a thorough search, because the smashing majority of 'vintage' fashion around is filled with 1950s rockabilly and pin-up. Here's a 1930s affictionata talking :)
I dressed vintage to school (late 1940s- early 1950s look) people guessed 30s, 50s, 60s, and even 80s. Most people just asked why I did my hair funny and why I looked like a grandma/librarian/old lady. I got a few compliments and a lot of confusion.
At school people will always try to intimidate you because they don't like when people start having own style - God forbid you may start having own opinion and will cooler then them.
Let me tell you about the people who still collect stamps. I went to the post office one day, wanting to send a letter (yes, people who write letters also still exist), and there was a stamp collector in front of me. He stood there for like half an hour browsing catalogues and asking the lady at the counter to bring him more and more. It was actually kind of cool. You know what? I always wanted to collect coins, I think I should start.
I collect stamps for over then 5 years now, i've got them from my dad, so i didn't have to start from start. I have stamps from more then 55 countries around the world, i know it's not a lot but I have special countries like Tanzania, Ajmar, Jordan,Manama, Phillipins, and I'm really happy because I live in Slovenia ( small countrie in Europe)

I dress in 1890s styles (mostly reproductions. Originals tend to be too small and too fragile). It took me four years to get to a point of being completely historically accurate.
Delenn Gérald - it’s not that hard. The hardest part is finding time for upkeep (mending, washing, ironing, starching, etc.). The only thing that I don’t like about actually wearing the clothing is when it’s raining and my long skirt drags on the ground, and acts like a wick in an oil lamp. After a day of walking around outside when the ground is wet, my skirt will have sucked up so much water that it’s soaking wet up to my knees. I could avoid this problem if I were smart enough to look at the weather forecast before getting dressed. That way I could just wear a skirt that’s a few inches above the ground.
I HEAR you!! That's encouraging actually because I'm just starting out and focusing on 30s styles but I also really love 1890s and right now it's just too hard to find anything and too expensive to buy reproductions but I'm hopeful!!
I used to be shy about wearing vintage clothes but then I thought hey vintage clothes (If done right) are cute! And there are so many trashy, ugly popular styles today. If people have no shame wearing a 70 dollar shirt woth HOLES IN IT I have no shame wearing my bomb ass vintage stuff
"You end up buying something you don't like because hey, it's vintage" I can relate to this, like, 150%! I have bought sweaters and knee-length skirts and shoes I would have burned a few years ago. On a side note: do you think you could make a video about winter vintage clothing? It's easy to get a vintage (or vintage-y) feel in the summer, with all the nice flowy, flowery dresses and cute shoes, but not as easy in the winter. When I look for winter vintage outfits I only see people suggest nice little sleeveless cardigans, peep-toe shoes with no stockings and pretty capes with 3/4 sleeves but, hey, where I live it's hella cold outside - and I'm pretty sure winter was just as cold in the 1940s! :D
I don't live in a particularly cold place, but I do get cold very easily, so who knows if the following will be of any help! 1) Wide leg/swing trousers. I feel like one can get away with wearing leggings/thermals underneath because the pants aren't form-fitting and are actually meant to fit on the looser side. The one's I have are long enough that you can barely see the shoes I wear them with, so again, one could wear shoes that are more practical rather than "fashionable". 2) Big coat- Overcoat, swagger coat, swing coat, polo coat, etc. The 40s (and 50s) had these big beautiful coats that would fit over one's outfit. They ranged from super simple to more "sophisticated" looking ones that I imagine were worn by women living in bigger, more fashion-forward cities. 3a) Wear clothes made of materials/fabric that keep warm. Wool was/is an excellent insulator. Many coats of that time were wool. Wool skirts can still be found as well. The downside is that if a wool garment isn't lined, it can get rather itchy. 3b) Layers. Women in the forties wore layers- longline bras, stockings, slips, etc. So even if the outfit isn't of the warmest material, the layers provide extra warmth. True then and true now. And layers can help mitigate the wool-itch. 4) I recommend getting reprinted catalogs such as, "Everyday Fashions of the (insert decade here)- As Pictured in Sears Catalogs", these are a great resource! Since its offers everyday fashion, winter clothes are included too (though the selection is smaller). With these, one can see the styles/cuts that were popular at the time which helps when looking to add pieces to our wardrobe. I know this isn't comprehensive, but I hope it's of some use.

I mean, I actually prefer fall/winter clothes and colour palette to the summer one, so I'm wearing my winter clothes pretty much the whole year (especially this year in Scotland - I'm actually writing this wearing my winter bottle green turtleneck). my vintage winter hacks - cosy knitted sweaters and vests, berets, fake fur, wool. I'm usually wearing not-very-proper thick black tights instead of stockings, because my legs are getting super cold. shoes are what I struggle with the most - on the original 1940s winter pics most women are actually wearing heels, but if you dig deep enough you can find some examples of warm boots and cute fur-trimmed shoes. and the rest have been written down here nicely by Ms. A!
A few additions: - They DID wear stockings with peeptoes. Not wearing stockings was considered improper. Even unseamed hosiery was considered improper at first, because it looked like you had naked legs. - Stockings were thicker than it may seem in the photos, especially in the 40's. They even had woollen ones. - In the 50's there were trousers that we in Finnish call "skiing pants". Not wide-legged, but quite slim around the calf. However still big enough to wear tights! - In the 40's and 50's most boots were low, mostly ankle length, but people wore gaiters or spats aka legwarmers that can be taken away once inside. They could turn even low shoes to being wearable at winter. (Of course that depends - in Finnish winter it is also about how warm the shoe itself is, how thick the sole etc.)
@pale magnolia...what a lovely screen name! 😊 a simple wool skirt can be worn as a petticoat & can greatly help in keeping one warm. I find it very useful so that I can wear my summer dresses even during the winter.
I love how you said Hairstyle = +1,000 points. It's so true, I've always said a vintage hairstyle can make or break a look. If you throw your hair into a barrel roll/victory rolls it makes almost anything look instantly vintage! I feel like it's the most important thing for people new to vintage style to learn, is how to do your hair! I am horrible with my hair, and it took me years to get it down, but now I can do something like a barrel roll in less than 10 minutes. It's great because it sort of hides any issues with your outfit! Newbies out there, practice the styles, I learned by practicing at night before I went to bed and brushing it out in the morning before anyone could see me!

It does! It seriously took me years and a lot of failing. My big tip is you have to go all in. When I was new I would try making victory rolls without curling the hair first, without teasing, and without using pomade and hairspray, and it would never work, and I gave up and just thought I couldn't do them. You have to just go for it 100% or else you will fail and get discouraged! There's some great TH-camrs with hair tutorials. Cherry Dollface has the best videos when it comes to talking through every step and common mistakes. She has a vintage hair do's and don'ts video as well as a pin curl/brush out do's and don'ts video that are super helpful! Her videos are great for teaching the basics, and where I learned to do rolls from. A Vintage Vanity also makes some great hair tutorials that are pretty easy to follow once you have the basics down. Lisa Fremont Street is like the mecca of vintage hair tutorials, there's TONS of videos on her channel. However, a lot of them are more advanced and sort of assume you have the basics down pat.
Well, you can also pull a me and show up to a 20s/30s themed event in victory rolls because that's the most vintage hairstyle I could think of. Not the right decade.
I agree so much is of these things, and I'm just starting to build up my collection. The only thing holding me back though is my mom.. she always mocks me and criticizes me whenever I try going full-on vintage, which I feel really comfortable and confident with.
Your mom just doesn't get it. I understand that because there was a time I called vintage stuff "old lady-ish." Now I love it. Forget that your mom disagrees with the style and rock it, girl!
strawbyrri I encountered similar criticism from my Mom for my style. All it took was my buying a vintage dress she hated and now I don't care what she thinks of my clothing. In fact, that dress is still my favorite! If you are buying your own clothes, get and wear what you like otherwise, you won't be happy and she never will be anyways. Wear what makes you feel the best. She's not wearing it, so she can keep her negative comments to herself.
All true! 😂 I was called "The Vintage Barbie Doll" at University. Decided day 1 of my four year stunt in college that I was going to dress in vintage-like fashion every day and it certainly didn't go unnoticed.

Some of my least favourite 'Vintage Girl' problems include; Conservative people believe on sight that you are one of their number, and that you must hold mid-century family values, or be a good little wifey. (NOPE) Progressive politics in a corset and gown, thank you! That the UK Rockabilly scene seems to be disproportionately made up of lecherous men nearing retirement age who dress like mid-fifties American teenagers and plenty of much younger women who are too polite to notice. That men on the street truly seem to think that you got dressed that day purely to fulfil their fantasies about how a woman should look and proudly feel it their solemn duty to exclaim that 'Its nice to see a woman looking like a real woman'. Except that all women should be free to dress as they wish without the judgment that they arent good enough to pass the eyeline of a creep. (BIG MASSIVE NOPE!) And finally, that no matter which vintage style you choose to wear, the women seem to tear each other down with comments that women in frocks are posers and should be wearing jeans and saddle shoes instead, or that girls in jeans and Pendletons should make more effort, or that what someone is wearing isn't 'original' (Bitch, please. We can't all be a walking museum as much as we'd like to!) FINALLY When you do an absolutely cracking wet set, you go to take it out and its still wet. Party over. p.s I forgot one of my main vintage girl issues, you touched on it about people approaching you. When you are super anxious and sometimes awkward but people mistake your eccentric dress for being extroverted and attention seeking. You just wanna get through the day in an outfit that makes you feel good but people want to talk to you about it lots because they think you want validation. (YIIIIKES!)

I don't wear vintage but I wear Japanese fashion a lot and the staring thing is so true. I've slowly gotten used it to but it still feels weird, these days I just tell myself "but you look cool, there's nothing to be afraid of" I really love when people express their own individual style I wish people were more open about those who do.
I love to use vintage dresses and skirts and when I was in High School some people used to treat me like "prude"and thought I was afraid or wasn't allowed to show my legs when actually I just wore it because I liked it and it was really comfortable. That kept me from using vintage clothing for many years after. I wish I'd had your channel back then
When I wear vintage I notice that more women and young ladies smile pleasantly or tell me they love my outfit. And men 40+ years old give me fond looks.
When I dress vintage the people who come up to me will compliment me and rave about my look and it's very sweet and flattering. I don't think I have EVER gotten a mean comment from anybody. However, perhaps I've gotten a few staggered looks here and there, but whatever. I love my style and I think 90% of others do as well. :D
Same here! Most people like it. I think because it's such a classic look that's friendly and not off putting the way a lot of other subcultures fashions are. Most people can remember a beloved older relative dressing that way (or dressing that way themselves!) and seeing it reminds them of that person and makes them smile. Most people don't see a punk rock person and think "Awwww, that reminds me of my grandma!" Hahahaha
The last point about being labeled as "the ____" is so true for all kinds of fashions. And it's not necessarily a bad thing. People will definitely remember you. I often came across this one woman at various university lectures, and she was always wearing the same, distinct outfit. It wasn't even anything strange or over-the-top, but the fact that she always had this one carefully put together look, made her seem like a character from a story. I have no idea who she was, and I never talked to her, but I always thought of her as "the NPC lady", because she looked like someone you might come across in a game, and who would send you on a quest. I used to imagine that she had a closet filled with similar outfits, one for each day of the week. Seeing her made me think of how cool it would be if, instead of following mass trends, everyone had their own distinct signature look and style. We could all be the unique characters of our lives. :)

So I did a wet set last night and wore a 50s looking dress for the first time today- people definitely noticed and treated me differently it was weird... not in a bad way..
I started wearing vintage, and started with crappy circle skirts that were cheap, and petticoats, due to my influences being my grandmother, who was a model for the 'new fashion' which was greatly appreciated for at least having a reference I could look at. I had a woman staring at me, which if say was normal as I was sitting, eating my mcnuggets because my friend left a coupon at my house and I'm broke as hell, and I'm not going to be picky, in a new silloute dior looking dress.

You can wear whatever you want to, just be satisfied with your body cuz you don't have to change it. And if you did so, and reached to a level of confidence that makes you consider your body as something you don't have to worry about, every single garment would look on you as if it meant to be just for you.
It's funny, because I like to switch between styles. I'm pretty addicted to Visual Kei (japanese dark rock style) and all its variations (meaning victorian inspired, super modern, futurisric, more punk, more casual, a little gore-y... etc) and that's my go-to, even my hair is cut spwcifically to fit that, but I also got into vintage over the summer... I already was into all-pastels as well before which is one heck of a contrast. I'll confuse the hell out of everybody at my new school (which is a fashion design school btw)

I'm a guy getting into vintage styled stuff. Not really thrift shopping, more like getting new stuff that's period correct or styled. I started with a greaser look, wearing the jacket, cuffing my pantlegs, styling my hair with pomade. I was wanting to get into 40's and 50's fashion, mainly with a suit and hat. However, no matter how good I think I look, or what my gf tells me, I still get nervous wearing the fedora. I don't know why. It could be that I have never worn a hat before in my life, or maybe the stigma associated with people trying to be "classy", but I cannot get the confidence to wear it. It's comfortable, I like how it looks, but I just get too damn nervous. Does anyone have any advice?

I'm working on going vintage Victorian... which isn't really possible or practical, so it's more like collecting things that have the look of being Victorian, like frilly shirts and granny boots. I have two corsets but no way I'm wearing one every day. lol.

Some folks are adversely affected when they're confronted with non-conformity, thus some express this through verbal abuse. Then some folks are inspired by non-conformity, thus some will compliment you. I don't wear specific era clothes, I just grew up a non-conformist. I did this unconsciously as I didn't know about social conditioning, conformity, mimicking in order to fit in and be accepted, herd mentality etc. till my mid 30s. I'm a 60 yr old male and I dress in what I like, not what's the latest trends or established fashion for each age group. I wear loose baggy clothes, cargos + t-shirt or long sleeved T, hoodie or thick wool jumper in winter. Usually bare foot, only wearing shoes if there's an attire restriction or it's really cold or hot. Casual hippy teenager look I suppose, but I doubt that's a style. My current fav cargos are a brand of workwear, simply because for $80AU, cargos from well known clothes shops are just crap quality, and I found out workwear are extremely high quality. Plus baggy cargos are being replaced by the god awful cringeworthy tight versions, I even saw one with elastic bands around the ankles...W.T.F... a cargo that isn't a cargo. Honestly it's just not common to catch slack for what you're wearing. Sometimes it can be that they just didnt use the right words and you have low confidence still. And other times, you're 13, they're 13. Everyone is 13 and an asshole. So.
Late late comment. But I love that I get labelled that way- because if I wasn’t “that vintage girl”, I’d be “that cat girl in the wheelchair”. So I make labels work for me. They see my style and not just my disability. I’m not trying to hide my disability (I don’t think that’s possible- wheelchairs can’t exactly be hidden). But with being “the disabled girl” comes pity. And pity sucks. But being the vintage girl does not come with pity- it comes with awe and “how did you do your hair like that?” Also, I don’t wear anything true vintage. It’s just too expensive and too difficult to get in my size. I’m more than happy to wear repro and thrifted items that I’ve “shmoozed”. Though I did find an old 80s hat that was in the style of a 40s hat (a half hat), it was just really dirty and covered in gross stuff 80s tulle. I fixed it and now it’s a more minimalistic 40s style half hat. But that’s it for true vintage. I might get a couple more vintage hats, because they seem to be relatively affordable on eBay, but I can’t see buying blouses or skirts or dresses. Just hats.

I've always dressed odd, most of my things have a Victorian or Renaissance flair to them, so a lot of people do stare. Some look at you like you are a freak, or some really like it, I dress up in my finds the closest I can get to the time period, when going to Historical places and often get confused with the reenactors or know the History, so the actors tell me I should do it, that I'd fit in. I am, because of this thinking about becoming a tour guide that dresses in period clothing, I think I'd be good at it and love it. I cringe when girls go out in their pajamas, how can they do that without feeling very under dressed? They are meant for bed, not outside wear.
I suspect some parts of clothing are more suspectible for that "I don't really like it but it maches my outfit". At least shoes. I am not a big fan of peeptoes, but will probably and buy them anyway...
I remember going to a vintage Club Car Show, and it seemed the Page look alikes were a dime a dozen. Everything was rockabilly or that classic pin-up you see everywhere now which isn't really classic. I was the only one that dressed in a more demure 50's dress with pearls. Actual vintage hair. I had several people ask me to take pictures with their cars, passing up the "Page" crowd because I looked more accurate with their car. What I like about the attention, is it's all the right kind! It comes from a point of view of genuine interest.
Story about the attention: One of the first times I wore a vintage outfit I was riding my bike (which has a vintage style) some people were talking on the sidewalk (I was on the road) and they stared at me so I put on the most silliest expression ever and I stared at them until I passed. I think they were surprised (How dare I make a face at them...its not like they were rudely staring).
I was in a grocery store wearing a military caped greatcoat. I was vaguely aware that I was being stared at, but that's pretty normal when you're in the dairy section wearing something that went out of style over a hundred years ago. What started to weird me out was the realization that a man was following me, but he stayed pretty far away and kept trying to make it seem like he wasn't following me, and wasn't watching me. After a bit, a woman finally caught up with him and they had a conversation, I could tell he was embarrassed, and he kept doing that little half hand wave to point me out while still trying to seem like he wasn't drawing attention to me. The woman looked exasperated and came right up to me and said, "My husband wants to know where you got the coat from and how much it cost." Turns out he did civil war reenactments and he was desperately in love...with my coat.

There is a girl in my nothing city who dresses like a perfect 40s film star. Hair , makeup , hats everything . She always brightens my day when I see her . Like a piece of art . And she is a bit of a celebrity because she stands out so much I have noticed her several times and mentioned seeing her to a coworker and she knew exactly who I meant.

I totally relate to the attention part! I'm used to it and I'm not. During a recent trip to Disneyland I wore a handmade dress (from a vintage pattern) and I got at least 50 compliments on my outfit or questions on where I got my dress. It got downright overwhelming, having multiple strangers (from different groups) at once coming up to compliment me! Then when they ask where I got my dress I felt bad saying it's handmade and not available to buy anywhere, because then they would gush more about how I must be talented to have sewn it! I know dressing this way means people will stare and comment, but I feel like saying "thank you" in response to a compliment isn't enough. As strange as it sounds, I think I could handle rude comments (which I have never gotten) better than being bombarded with compliments, because it's harder to react to compliments!

Something nobody told me about wearing vintage : Irish charity/thrift shops are terrible, seriously almost every vintage blogger seems to have vintage gold mines in their local charity shops but the oldest thing I've ever found in a charity shop was 15 years old , even if I find something I like it's probably too big for me because most of the people who are donating clothes are Middle age women who are much bigger than me . But I'm hoping to get better at sewing to get more vintage style pieces . Sorry for the rant , I love your videos .

The US most stuff is divined, you can't go to a normal thrift store and expect anything older than the 1990s, finding hats, gloves and bags (which aren't very useful...) is easy because ever antique mall will have them. Finding actual vintage clothing will expensive, and depending on your area you might have to travel (more artsy cities will have more vintage clothing shops).
You're not alone! I don't own a single vintage piece, partially because the shops around here only have 90's and some 80's stuff, and I'm a plus size girl with a huge chest that wouldn't fit into most vintage stuff. I make about 85% of my clothes myself. Most major pattern companies sell reproductions of vintage patterns, and it's pretty easy to find true vintage patterns on Etsy. Also, circle skirts and gathered skirts are ridiculously easy to make, and are great staples for a vintage look! Just wanted to say you don't have to wear vintage to have a vintage look. My style is more or the New Look (now often referred to as Pinup) style, and I don't wear a single vintage piece, so it's totally possible without it! And making your own clothes is a very vintage thing to do!

It's also kind of weird that "vintage clothes" is considered a single, uniform category, when the clothes differ so much from one era to another. Like, someone who likes 1950s clothes wouldn't be likely to like 1970s clothes, etc. So when someone asks, "Do you like vintage?," I don't know what to tell them. It's just one of those overly broad categories.

Hint for lipstick staying, apply the lipstick liberally and blot regularly with tissue then put a translucent powder on, afterwards reapply the lipstick, blot, and powder. Final coat then blot should stay there all day

One thing about vintage clothing is that it is typically available in one size - the size of the specific piece. If you know how to sew you might be able to reproduce it in your own size.
I've been in love with so many clothing styles, including vintage. I love the look of vintage and since last year I wear vintage clothes pieces too. I take elements from vintage, combine it with modern cloths and make it my own. It still has vintage details, but more modern. i could never be 100% vintage. It is just not me.
I find it interesting how you talk about the hairstyle element when that was one of the first ways I started learning about vintage style and wearing it myself. I would wear some of my modern clothes that when styled right are close to passing for vintage style, and pin curl my hair. I can't imagine trying to do vintage style without doing something with my hair??? I hope you have a lovely day!
I totally agree with so many of your points, most of them I wish I had known when I first started wearing vintage. Especially about getting attention, and the time it take to find and create your own vintage look. I am always amazed at how wearing vintage can make other people who see me so happy though.

I like wearing 1940s suits, unfortunately in Italy there aren't any due to the extreme poverty of our country during the war and under bombs so my best is dig in ebay or etsy looking for something on budget.
And I found some nice pieces in USA in 120-180 $ range. My best was a 1940s pair of Nettleton shoes apparently never worn for 35$. Now I own 4 suits 1939-1948 and now, for everyday use, I'm adding some mid 1950s british suits, more wearable for today standards, they keep the style but not so flashy.
To wear these, well, I usually wear suits in winter so I don't have summer suits due to its extremely high cost. In spring-summer I'm regular 1940s with khaki slacks and plaid shirt.
The phrase that makes me angry? ooh very nice suit, so stylish...gangster?

Oh no! I wonder if the Renaissance way of wearing "lipstick" would also affect you like that? They used beet juice to stain their lips. Hope you're able to achieve your look either way.
I don't mind getting extra attention because of my clothes, but! getting attention because of my hair is problematic for me. I do very simple pin curls, because I'm still a newbie trying to make it work and I already see people staring at me. I always had plain hairstyles so now it's very uncomfortable for me. I try to curl my hair and at the same time style it in the way no one can notice a vintage vibe.
MargaretHagar Start taking people's stares as a form of compliment and appreciation for the time you took putting your look together. Nowadays, fashion and hairstyles don't require much, so seeing someone with their hair done, even if its simple, catches people's attention. I suffer from social anxiety and sometimes stares can be overwhelming but I always try to take it as a compliment, whether it is or isn't, for being one of the few who still believes in putting effort into creating a look, instead of just relying on the latest trend. It takes a lot of creativity and effort into developing a personal style, stop downplaying those wonderful qualities in you. If people are gonna stare, you might as well give them a good reason. ;)

I dressed vintage to school (late 1940s- early 1950s look) people guessed 30s, 50s, 60s, and even 80s. Most people just asked why I did my hair funny and why I looked like a grandma/librarian/old lady. I got a few compliments and a lot of confusion.
At school people will always try to intimidate you because they don't like when people start having own style - God forbid you may start having own opinion and will cooler then them.
Let me tell you about the people who still collect stamps. I went to the post office one day, wanting to send a letter (yes, people who write letters also still exist), and there was a stamp collector in front of me. He stood there for like half an hour browsing catalogues and asking the lady at the counter to bring him more and more. It was actually kind of cool. You know what? I always wanted to collect coins, I think I should start.

I dress in 1890s styles (mostly reproductions. Originals tend to be too small and too fragile). It took me four years to get to a point of being completely historically accurate.
How do you manage it in everyday life ? It is actually my favourite time period but I only wear corsets in my everyday life
Delenn Gérald - it’s not that hard. The hardest part is finding time for upkeep (mending, washing, ironing, starching, etc.). The only thing that I don’t like about actually wearing the clothing is when it’s raining and my long skirt drags on the ground, and acts like a wick in an oil lamp. After a day of walking around outside when the ground is wet, my skirt will have sucked up so much water that it’s soaking wet up to my knees. I could avoid this problem if I were smart enough to look at the weather forecast before getting dressed. That way I could just wear a skirt that’s a few inches above the ground.

"You end up buying something you don't like because hey, it's vintage" I can relate to this, like, 150%! I have bought sweaters and knee-length skirts and shoes I would have burned a few years ago. On a side note: do you think you could make a video about winter vintage clothing? It's easy to get a vintage (or vintage-y) feel in the summer, with all the nice flowy, flowery dresses and cute shoes, but not as easy in the winter. When I look for winter vintage outfits I only see people suggest nice little sleeveless cardigans, peep-toe shoes with no stockings and pretty capes with 3/4 sleeves but, hey, where I live it's hella cold outside - and I'm pretty sure winter was just as cold in the 1940s! :D
I don't live in a particularly cold place, but I do get cold very easily, so who knows if the following will be of any help!
1) Wide leg/swing trousers. I feel like one can get away with wearing leggings/thermals underneath because the pants aren't form-fitting and are actually meant to fit on the looser side. The one's I have are long enough that you can barely see the shoes I wear them with, so again, one could wear shoes that are more practical rather than "fashionable".
2) Big coat- Overcoat, swagger coat, swing coat, polo coat, etc. The 40s (and 50s) had these big beautiful coats that would fit over one's outfit. They ranged from super simple to more "sophisticated" looking ones that I imagine were worn by women living in bigger, more fashion-forward cities.
3a) Wear clothes made of materials/fabric that keep warm. Wool was/is an excellent insulator. Many coats of that time were wool. Wool skirts can still be found as well. The downside is that if a wool garment isn't lined, it can get rather itchy.
3b) Layers. Women in the forties wore layers- longline bras, stockings, slips, etc. So even if the outfit isn't of the warmest material, the layers provide extra warmth. True then and true now. And layers can help mitigate the wool-itch.
4) I recommend getting reprinted catalogs such as, "Everyday Fashions of the (insert decade here)- As Pictured in Sears Catalogs", these are a great resource! Since its offers everyday fashion, winter clothes are included too (though the selection is smaller). With these, one can see the styles/cuts that were popular at the time which helps when looking to add pieces to our wardrobe.
I know this isn't comprehensive, but I hope it's of some use.
I mean, I actually prefer fall/winter clothes and colour palette to the summer one, so I'm wearing my winter clothes pretty much the whole year (especially this year in Scotland - I'm actually writing this wearing my winter bottle green turtleneck). my vintage winter hacks - cosy knitted sweaters and vests, berets, fake fur, wool. I'm usually wearing not-very-proper thick black tights instead of stockings, because my legs are getting super cold. shoes are what I struggle with the most - on the original 1940s winter pics most women are actually wearing heels, but if you dig deep enough you can find some examples of warm boots and cute fur-trimmed shoes. and the rest have been written down here nicely by Ms. A!
A few additions:
- They DID wear stockings with peeptoes. Not wearing stockings was considered improper. Even unseamed hosiery was considered improper at first, because it looked like you had naked legs.
- Stockings were thicker than it may seem in the photos, especially in the 40's. They even had woollen ones.
- In the 50's there were trousers that we in Finnish call "skiing pants". Not wide-legged, but quite slim around the calf. However still big enough to wear tights!
- In the 40's and 50's most boots were low, mostly ankle length, but people wore gaiters or spats aka legwarmers that can be taken away once inside. They could turn even low shoes to being wearable at winter. (Of course that depends - in Finnish winter it is also about how warm the shoe itself is, how thick the sole etc.)
@pale magnolia...what a lovely screen name! 😊 a simple wool skirt can be worn as a petticoat & can greatly help in keeping one warm. I find it very useful so that I can wear my summer dresses even during the winter.
I love how you said Hairstyle = +1,000 points. It's so true, I've always said a vintage hairstyle can make or break a look. If you throw your hair into a barrel roll/victory rolls it makes almost anything look instantly vintage! I feel like it's the most important thing for people new to vintage style to learn, is how to do your hair! I am horrible with my hair, and it took me years to get it down, but now I can do something like a barrel roll in less than 10 minutes. It's great because it sort of hides any issues with your outfit! Newbies out there, practice the styles, I learned by practicing at night before I went to bed and brushing it out in the morning before anyone could see me!
whossoul any tips for newbies? or sources to learn from you can recommend? i'm learning how to pin curl my hair and its hard and then after brush out its a total mess. i hope it will get better with practice.
It does! It seriously took me years and a lot of failing. My big tip is you have to go all in. When I was new I would try making victory rolls without curling the hair first, without teasing, and without using pomade and hairspray, and it would never work, and I gave up and just thought I couldn't do them. You have to just go for it 100% or else you will fail and get discouraged! There's some great TH-camrs with hair tutorials. Cherry Dollface has the best videos when it comes to talking through every step and common mistakes. She has a vintage hair do's and don'ts video as well as a pin curl/brush out do's and don'ts video that are super helpful! Her videos are great for teaching the basics, and where I learned to do rolls from. A Vintage Vanity also makes some great hair tutorials that are pretty easy to follow once you have the basics down. Lisa Fremont Street is like the mecca of vintage hair tutorials, there's TONS of videos on her channel. However, a lot of them are more advanced and sort of assume you have the basics down pat.

I agree so much is of these things, and I'm just starting to build up my collection. The only thing holding me back though is my mom.. she always mocks me and criticizes me whenever I try going full-on vintage, which I feel really comfortable and confident with.

strawbyrri I encountered similar criticism from my Mom for my style. All it took was my buying a vintage dress she hated and now I don't care what she thinks of my clothing. In fact, that dress is still my favorite! If you are buying your own clothes, get and wear what you like otherwise, you won't be happy and she never will be anyways. Wear what makes you feel the best. She's not wearing it, so she can keep her negative comments to herself.

Some of my least favourite 'Vintage Girl' problems include;
Conservative people believe on sight that you are one of their number, and that you must hold mid-century family values, or be a good little wifey. (NOPE) Progressive politics in a corset and gown, thank you!
That the UK Rockabilly scene seems to be disproportionately made up of lecherous men nearing retirement age who dress like mid-fifties American teenagers and plenty of much younger women who are too polite to notice.
That men on the street truly seem to think that you got dressed that day purely to fulfil their fantasies about how a woman should look and proudly feel it their solemn duty to exclaim that 'Its nice to see a woman looking like a real woman'. Except that all women should be free to dress as they wish without the judgment that they arent good enough to pass the eyeline of a creep. (BIG MASSIVE NOPE!)
And finally, that no matter which vintage style you choose to wear, the women seem to tear each other down with comments that women in frocks are posers and should be wearing jeans and saddle shoes instead, or that girls in jeans and Pendletons should make more effort, or that what someone is wearing isn't 'original' (Bitch, please. We can't all be a walking museum as much as we'd like to!)

p.s I forgot one of my main vintage girl issues, you touched on it about people approaching you. When you are super anxious and sometimes awkward but people mistake your eccentric dress for being extroverted and attention seeking. You just wanna get through the day in an outfit that makes you feel good but people want to talk to you about it lots because they think you want validation. (YIIIIKES!)

I really love when people express their own individual style I wish people were more open about those who do.
I love to use vintage dresses and skirts and when I was in High School some people used to treat me like "prude"and thought I was afraid or wasn't allowed to show my legs when actually I just wore it because I liked it and it was really comfortable. When I wear vintage I notice that more women and young ladies smile pleasantly or tell me they love my outfit. And men 40+ years old give me fond looks.

When I dress vintage the people who come up to me will compliment me and rave about my look and it's very sweet and flattering. I don't think I have EVER gotten a mean comment from anybody. However, perhaps I've gotten a few staggered looks here and there, but whatever. I love my style and I think 90% of others do as well. :D
Same here! Most people like it. I think because it's such a classic look that's friendly and not off putting the way a lot of other subcultures fashions are. Most people can remember a beloved older relative dressing that way (or dressing that way themselves!) and seeing it reminds them of that person and makes them smile. Most people don't see a punk rock person and think "Awwww, that reminds me of my grandma!" Hahahaha
The last point about being labeled as "the ____" is so true for all kinds of fashions. And it's not necessarily a bad thing. People will definitely remember you. I often came across this one woman at various university lectures, and she was always wearing the same, distinct outfit. It wasn't even anything strange or over-the-top, but the fact that she always had this one carefully put together look, made her seem like a character from a story. I have no idea who she was, and I never talked to her, but I always thought of her as "the NPC lady", because she looked like someone you might come across in a game, and who would send you on a quest. I used to imagine that she had a closet filled with similar outfits, one for each day of the week. Seeing her made me think of how cool it would be if, instead of following mass trends, everyone had their own distinct signature look and style. We could all be the unique characters of our lives. :)

I started wearing vintage, and started with crappy circle skirts that were cheap, and petticoats, due to my influences being my grandmother, who was a model for the 'new fashion' which was greatly appreciated for at least having a reference I could look at. I had a woman staring at me, which if say was normal as I was sitting, eating my mcnuggets because my friend left a coupon at my house and I'm broke as hell, and I'm not going to be picky, in a new silloute dior looking dress.

You can wear whatever you want to, just be satisfied with your body cuz you don't have to change it. And if you did so, and reached to a level of confidence that makes you consider your body as something you don't have to worry about, every single garment would look on you as if it meant to be just for you.
It's funny, because I like to switch between styles. I'm pretty addicted to Visual Kei (japanese dark rock style) and all its variations (meaning victorian inspired, super modern, futurisric, more punk, more casual, a little gore-y... etc) and that's my go-to, even my hair is cut spwcifically to fit that, but I also got into vintage over the summer... I already was into all-pastels as well before which is one heck of a contrast. I'll confuse the hell out of everybody at my new school (which is a fashion design school btw)

I'm a guy getting into vintage styled stuff. Not really thrift shopping, more like getting new stuff that's period correct or styled. I started with a greaser look, wearing the jacket, cuffing my pantlegs, styling my hair with pomade. I was wanting to get into 40's and 50's fashion, mainly with a suit and hat. However, no matter how good I think I look, or what my gf tells me, I still get nervous wearing the fedora. I don't know why. It could be that I have never worn a hat before in my life, or maybe the stigma associated with people trying to be "classy", but I cannot get the confidence to wear it. It's comfortable, I like how it looks, but I just get too damn nervous. Does anyone have any advice?

Some folks are adversely affected when they're confronted with non-conformity, thus some express this through verbal abuse.
Then some folks are inspired by non-conformity, thus some will compliment you.
I don't wear specific era clothes, I just grew up a non-conformist. I did this unconsciously as I didn't know about social conditioning, conformity, mimicking in order to fit in and be accepted, herd mentality etc. till my mid 30s.
I'm a 60 yr old male and I dress in what I like, not what's the latest trends or established fashion for each age group. I wear loose baggy clothes, cargos + t-shirt or long sleeved T, hoodie or thick wool jumper in winter. Usually bare foot, only wearing shoes if there's an attire restriction or it's really cold or hot.
Casual hippy teenager look I suppose, but I doubt that's a style.
My current fav cargos are a brand of workwear, simply because for $80AU, cargos from well known clothes shops are just crap quality, and I found out workwear are extremely high quality.
Plus baggy cargos are being replaced by the god awful cringeworthy tight versions, I even saw one with elastic bands around the ankles...W.T.F... a cargo that isn't a cargo.

Honestly it's just not common to catch slack for what you're wearing. Sometimes it can be that they just didnt use the right words and you have low confidence still. And other times, you're 13, they're 13. Everyone is 13 and an asshole. So.
Late late comment. But I love that I get labelled that way- because if I wasn’t “that vintage girl”, I’d be “that cat girl in the wheelchair”.
So I make labels work for me. They see my style and not just my disability. I’m not trying to hide my disability (I don’t think that’s possible- wheelchairs can’t exactly be hidden). But with being “the disabled girl” comes pity. And pity sucks.
But being the vintage girl does not come with pity- it comes with awe and “how did you do your hair like that?”
Also, I don’t wear anything true vintage. It’s just too expensive and too difficult to get in my size. I’m more than happy to wear repro and thrifted items that I’ve “shmoozed”. Though I did find an old 80s hat that was in the style of a 40s hat (a half hat), it was just really dirty and covered in gross stuff 80s tulle. I fixed it and now it’s a more minimalistic 40s style half hat. But that’s it for true vintage. I might get a couple more vintage hats, because they seem to be relatively affordable on eBay, but I can’t see buying blouses or skirts or dresses. Just hats.

I've always dressed odd, most of my things have a Victorian or Renaissance flair to them, so a lot of people do stare. Some look at you like you are a freak, or some really like it, I dress up in my finds the closest I can get to the time period, when going to Historical places and often get confused with the reenactors or know the History, so the actors tell me I should do it, that I'd fit in. I am, because of this thinking about becoming a tour guide that dresses in period clothing, I think I'd be good at it and love it. I cringe when girls go out in their pajamas, how can they do that without feeling very under dressed? They are meant for bed, not outside wear.
I suspect some parts of clothing are more suspectible for that "I don't really like it but it maches my outfit". At least shoes. I am not a big fan of peeptoes, but will probably and buy them anyway...
I remember going to a vintage Club Car Show, and it seemed the Page look alikes were a dime a dozen. Everything was rockabilly or that classic pin-up you see everywhere now which isn't really classic. I was the only one that dressed in a more demure 50's dress with pearls. Actual vintage hair. I had several people ask me to take pictures with their cars, passing up the "Page" crowd because I looked more accurate with their car. What I like about the attention, is it's all the right kind! It comes from a point of view of genuine interest.

Story about the attention: One of the first times I wore a vintage outfit I was riding my bike (which has a vintage style) some people were talking on the sidewalk (I was on the road) and they stared at me so I put on the most silliest expression ever and I stared at them until I passed. I think they were surprised (How dare I make a face at them...its not like they were rudely staring).
