Funny Steve story. I saw him, without knowing anything about him, when he was with Ronnie Montrose and they opened for the Aynsley Dunbar version of Journey on the Infinity tour with Steve Perry. Steve’s drums were “difficult” like they were thrown up in 15 minutes and still being adjusted when the set started. After the show everybody was talking about how great Journey was but me. I kept asking my band mates “didn’t you see how good Ronnie’s drummer was?” No one did. And they knew I was a huge Aynsley fan and copied a lot of his chops. A while later, I showed them the drummer on Evolution. Then had to explain he was Ronnie Montrose’s drummer I was talking about. I have followed him since and saw his first Vital show backing up Jeff Lorber in Portland, Or as “1 in 14” shows to add to my list without counting Journey. Including one Hiromi Trio show which was beyond stellar. He is an inspiration to the work it takes to excel and I loved his ironing board lesson
Man! I was a student at mi at this time!! Lockdown started and school went online a week after this! I bet I walked right past these guys without realizing :(
So nice Steve can play Coltrane like nobodys busness-like an old school master and yet can play the heaviest metal and rock spectacularly. Not really a finer drummer out there
Cant wait to see this band live on 06/18/23
