Retired M1A1 Tanker here. Charlie Co. 4th Battalion 70th Armor got new ones in '88 and I was one of the luckiest tankers to get their tank factory fresh from Detroit. They were amazing. The "X" being lighter, faster, more fuel efficient, and the capability to operate every system without running to engine can't be overstated. I'm still "old school" though and prefer a human loader. This tank is an engineering masterpiece. Let's hope it lives up to it's older brother's track record. Cheers from America. ✌
You mentioned the good things but the carousel ammunition storage is catastrophic. I know they put a blow out panel in the turret but you still damage/destroy your carousel so you lose the tank whereas on the M1 if the ammo blows you just clean up and reload and go back into the fight. Also there is no mention of how long it takes the Abramsx auto loader to reload. I think the M1 loader can do it in 4-5 seconds while the Russian auto loader takes 9 seconds.
The thing that surprises me about this, is that this almost seems less like a tank and more like an armored vehicle with as many weapons systems and sensory systems crammed into it, that also just so happens to have a main gun in a turret. The introduction of so much digitalization and even AI integration almost makes it feel like the tank is a drone that just so happens to be controlled from the inside.

And has no stabilized gun. This is the best video I've seen on the tank. I didn't know they were adding another radar to defend against top attacks. One thing it really needs is a hard kill APS system capable of taking out kinetic rounds though.
@@viccao8431 Yup trophy isn't good against apfsds rounds. But Merkava's are quite heavily armoured tanks so trophy works well for them. I think same for Abrams but if you have iron fist then that is great as well since it can lessen the impact of a kinetic round. And yeah its definitely possible to fit it onto the Abrams X. theres another experimental system from the US thats even more impressive. I always forget its name.
I like the idea of making a new generation of tanks. Some are saying we should go to the 130mm Rheinmetall or the 140mm Nexter. Are either one of those guns electrothermal chemical guns like the 120mm on the Abrams X? Would their rounds be more powerful than the new rounds for the Abrams X's 120mm? I think a 4th crew member should be added so he can help operate secondary and tertiary weapon systems such as the 30mm canon, hero drones, etc. I'd say mount a .50 paired with a crows system on top. Add some active countermeasures to go along with the already present passive ones. Add reactive armor. Is it true these tanks will have javelins? That would be a weapon system the 4th crew member could utilize while the gunner/commander are concentrating on primary targets. As far as a tank platoon goes, maybe the lead tank of the platoon could use reconnaissance drones in place of hero drones.
Being an old Tanker I'll say up front! Go with the German 130mm and it has a good Auto Loader. Next, the top of the hull (not turret) needs more Armor. I know T-14 is Vaporware but look at Armor around the hatches above and behind the crew? Even if it is laminated, it is too thin. I love the Hybrid Engine! The Germans have Tech demos of 1 and Un-manned Turrets that can be built under license just as the current gun is. Oh and 130mm is the sweet spot since 140mm is even larger has to slow down the rate of fire after the first 5 or 6 rounds due the recoil system's hydraulics and heat of the barrel. 130mm has a 50% increase in Lethality and Range over the light weight 120mm that uses the same Ammo as current gun.

@@Joe_Friday In that case the HEAT round hits 4 seconds after the sabot round. A sabot round will likely not cause critical damage - but will distract the crew for a few seconds. Also the battle carry ammunition will generally be HEAT unless you are expecting to be running into tanks. And the 30mm is a waste. First of all the issue HEAT round is actually HEAT-MP the 'MP' means 'multi-purpose.' in 'ground' mode it functions as a standard HEAT round. In 'air' mode it is designed to kill helicopters (even helicopters that are hiding behind a hill but are raising some dust to give away their locations. (Note 'shaking trees' also give away a hidden helicopter's location.)
In favour of the KF51 as its a much more flashed out concept and the Panther gun is far superior. But it doesent matter, we Germans gonna fight besides our American brothers till the end.

Even though it's a highly unscientific method, I believe that you can make a good guess about the quality and effectiveness of a weapon just by looking at it. This goes for everything from a dagger to a naval ship. Any weapon that is the result of compromises, corrective altrerations or poor quality will reveal signs of this already at a casual inspection. This is how excellent weapons like a katana, the Spitfire, the Panzer III, the Centurion and the Bismark turned out to be some of the most beautiful, well balanced and harmonious designs. And when I compare the look of the T14 Armata with the new generation of the M1, the first one looks like it was designed by children, especially compared to the sleek lines and absolute perfection of the latter. This is a contender to the title "best MBT in the world". And when you look at the specs, they don't disappoint.
Yet the T14 Armata still has better crew protection, because it has very strong ERA + very thick composite armor behind it, meanwhile the Abramx X still retains the same weak upper hull front plate of the Basic Abrams, which is literally just 1 single steel plate angled at 83 degrees. This plate would have to be at least 100~150 mm thick in order to stop modern rounds, which is very unlikely though, considering the current M1A2 Abrams only has around 70mm at the upper hull front plate and it doesn't look like the Abrams X has a much thicker upper hull front plate, which is not able to resist modern projectiles that can easilly penetrate over 700~800 mm (the T14 Armata gun can even pentrate 1.000 mm armor)

The Idea was that they would use this to decide what features the next tank will have. The turret on the demonstrator is likely a fake because it looks nothing like the turret that was being fired off the test stand. And a lot of the exterior features appear to have been designed for looks and not practicality. Note the placement of the headlights and how it will leave the left and right sides ahead of the tank shadowed if they dried to use them at night. And that strip on the front of the tank with the cameras and thermal sensors? How long are they going to survive with a brush guard? Look at the placemat of the flash suppressor for the coaxial machine gun - then look at the roof behind it - there simply isn't room to mount a machinegun there. Much less open the top so you can load it. The hunter/killer sights for the gunner are a waste. The gunners' sights should be mechanically linked to the main gun to ensure they are always pointing at the same thin the main gun is. Putting the sights in a 'dog house' on the roof of the tank reduces the overall profile of the tank and allows you to use larger (and better) optics and thermal sensors. And the 30mm commander's weapon is just plain stupid. They build a low-profile turret to enhance stealth and then put that on top? And as some testes with some marines recently demonstrated AI threat detection still can't beat the humand eyeball and brain. And it will not be as maneuverable as the previous M1s because it will have a diesel instead of the turbine. People really have no appreciation of the tactical agility the turbine gives the M1. The Army tried to replace the turbine on the M1 with a diesel, but the tanks crews said 'no.' Now if it were diesel-electric drive you would have the instant power response. BTW - the hybrid system comes with a huge drawback. If the Lithium-ion batteries take battle damage - the tank becomes a total loss. There will be no way to put out the fire. Also you need to consider the drawbacks of a three-man crew. First of all is that you are adding another complex mechanical system (the autoloader) to everything else on the tank and have one less person to help with the daily checks, cleaning, calibrations and maintenance (on average a tank crew spends 8 man-hours a day taking care of their tank).
The turret still needs to have heavy armor as the turret is most likely to get hit. However compared to T-14 - which appears to have a very vulnerable small turret - the AbramsX turret is still the same size so should have good armor so very difficult to take out. Placing the crew in the hull makes them more vulnerable to mines, however it appears they are further back than the driver is normally. So this should give more protection. It is unclear how they enter and exit the vehicle. Should they all squize trough the hull 'driver' hatch when they have to evac?
It is just a Abrams that addresses all the weakness’s of the M1 a2. Better fuel economy, able to run in silent mode, more battlefield awareness, and a active protection system. Now General Dynamics Land Systems just has to show that it works. And is as advertised. That’s the hard part.

My main point is, the new general dynamics tank needs to prove it works. Having a long list of cool features does it mean any of it will work on the battlefield. Those blast doors are too big when opened in this animation. Usually tanks that feature cassette autoloaders or Meggit autoloader have small blast doors, it's usually a small hole so that the autoloader can ram or access the shell.
Questions. 1. Does it have cupholders? 2. Does it have capacity for manual loading, and who picks up that task (Gunner) with transfer of gun to commander? 3. Are there manual back up systems if EMP? 4. Would be cool if they put surface to air sidepods on either side of the coax MG mount. Would also be cool to add a coax M19 along with the coax 50. It's possible.
jesus H. Christ, a lighter tank isn't more maneuverable because of it. The M1 Abrams is extremely maneuverable, the weight reduction will help with a lot of things, but not making the tank more maneuverable than it already is. And no, the turret didn't become smaller nor lighter as it is optionally manned, requiring the space on it to fit two crewmen if needed

I wonder what would happen if you ran this tank on hydrogen. I'm thinking that because hydrogen has three times more energy per volume we could get much better mileage from a gas tank filled with hydrogen. I don't know how volatile hydrogen is, but there are measures we could take to safeguard against hydrogen instability. We could probably run a lot of military vehicles on hydrogen.
Because nothing has been invented yet that fills the role that the main battle tank fills in a modern army. Yes, it's more vulnurable now, especially when used incorrectly like the Russians are currently. (little to no infantry support, very lackluster scouting, just driving in tight columns begging to be ambushed, etc) Same reason why Ukraine has been continuously asking for Leopard 2's/Abrams. Javelins are great defensive weapons, and drones are great support weapons, but Javelins can't really be used offensively (must be stationary to use, heavy, no protection, no anti infantry/cover usage) and drones simply don't have the firepower. If tanks are obsolete by being killable by javelins/drones, then how are regular soldiers not obsolete yet? Just one piece of shrapnel to the vitals and a soldier is disabled.
It has full around protection against RPG-7 and Can Stop RPG-29 and ATGM depends on what part is hit when it hit the frontal it would unlikely to penetrate. The side are more thinner but most tank are equip with ERA and Advanced composite armor

Not really a copy, the auto loader wasn’t designed by mentally challenged people so the detonation of the ammunition won’t cause a catastrophic failure. The T14 will always remain a concept tank as Russia will never produce them in any significant quantity.
But, WHO can PRODUCE the MOST of their top-tier tanks? 😉 Germany needs to get a lot LESS serious about its tanks, and, a lot MORE serious about its LEADERSHIP and NATIONAL PHILOSOPHY: As it stands now, Germany is committing genetic and cultural SUICIDE.

The Abrams X's optics are mades by french company SAFRAN, the sames than the EBRC Jaguar.
Those "bevels" are storage bins and component covers similar to the LeClerc. The armor is underneath.

It is unclear how they enter and exit the vehicle. Should they all squize trough the hull 'driver' hatch when they have to evac?

It is just a Abrams that addresses all the weakness’s of the M1 a2. Better fuel economy, able to run in silent mode, more battlefield awareness, and a active protection system. Now General Dynamics Land Systems just has to show that it works. And is as advertised. That’s the hard part.

Those blast doors are too big when opened in this animation. Usually tanks that feature cassette autoloaders or Meggit autoloader have small blast doors, it's usually a small hole so that the autoloader can ram or access the shell.
All that computer integrated functions. I hope it is EMP proof. Shooting out the viewers for the crew would cripple it quickly.
Military equipment is already made EMP resistant. Additionally, I think it's safe to assume they've considered it

jesus H. Christ, a lighter tank isn't more maneuverable because of it. The M1 Abrams is extremely maneuverable, the weight reduction will help with a lot of things, but not making the tank more maneuverable than it already is.
And no, the turret didn't become smaller nor lighter as it is optionally manned, requiring the space on it to fit two crewmen if needed

I wonder what would happen if you ran this tank on hydrogen. I'm thinking that because hydrogen has three times more energy per volume we could get much better mileage from a gas tank filled with hydrogen. I don't know how volatile hydrogen is, but there are measures we could take to safeguard against hydrogen instability. We could probably run a lot of military vehicles on hydrogen.

Yes, it's more vulnurable now, especially when used incorrectly like the Russians are currently. (little to no infantry support, very lackluster scouting, just driving in tight columns begging to be ambushed, etc)
Same reason why Ukraine has been continuously asking for Leopard 2's/Abrams. Javelins are great defensive weapons, and drones are great support weapons, but Javelins can't really be used offensively (must be stationary to use, heavy, no protection, no anti infantry/cover usage) and drones simply don't have the firepower.
If tanks are obsolete by being killable by javelins/drones, then how are regular soldiers not obsolete yet? Just one piece of shrapnel to the vitals and a soldier is disabled.

It has full around protection against RPG-7 and Can Stop RPG-29 and ATGM depends on what part is hit when it hit the frontal it would unlikely to penetrate. The side are more thinner but most tank are equip with ERA and Advanced composite armor

I like the idea of making a new generation of tanks. Some are saying we should go to the 130mm Rheinmetall or the 140mm Nexter. Are either one of those guns electrothermal chemical guns like the 120mm on the Abrams X? Would their rounds be more powerful than the new rounds for the Abrams X's 120mm? I think a 4th crew member should be added so he can help operate secondary and tertiary weapon systems such as the 30mm canon, hero drones, etc. I'd say mount a .50 paired with a crows system on top. Add some active countermeasures to go along with the already present passive ones. Add reactive armor. Is it true these tanks will have javelins? That would be a weapon system the 4th crew member could utilize while the gunner/commander are concentrating on primary targets. As far as a tank platoon goes, maybe the lead tank of the platoon could use reconnaissance drones in place of hero drones.

Not really a copy, the auto loader wasn’t designed by mentally challenged people so the detonation of the ammunition won’t cause a catastrophic failure. The T14 will always remain a concept tank as Russia will never produce them in any significant quantity.
