  • We get a ton of comments and message about the ins and outs of building a traditional hot rod, and where to find the information. Well today Matt is going to share a few of the books he references the most when working on any of the projects. A vast majority of the information on traditional hot rods can be found on the internet, but it some times can be watered down and miss the mark. Obtaining this books that were written by the early hot rodders can be a great source of information and inspiration. Be sure to comment down below with other books that you would add to the list!!

    Hey Matt,
    WOW !
That was a "bleep " load of info !
But the one I am most interested in is the one that deals with the BIG Flat Head Ford Lincoln/truck engine.
As a boy I hung around a corner garage where the guys got into circle track dirt racing at the Orange Show Raceway as well as Gardena Motor Speedway in Southern Calif.
They did good, but wanted to do better.
SO, They got hold of the Lincoln/Truck big flat head.
They had finned aluminum heads made for it.
Had a three duece intake cast for it.
Punched the Cylinders completely out and resleeved it for big chevy pistons and cleaned house with it.
No one could touch them !
The big engine was too much for the banjo rear ends so they built a Ford 3/4 Ford truck rear axle with full floater hubs.
They had GETZ gears make them a 4:11 ring & pinion and became unstopable with that big ass flathead.
The CJA, ( California Jalopy Assn. ) Finally went to overhead valve engines and we got into the SBC and did well.
The big block Flat Head went into an already record setting Model A coupe and set even more records at Colton Drag stripe near San Bernardino, Calif.
I know this is a big comment but I would really like to have that book as I am searching for one of those big flat head engines to build.
Thank you for all the info on the books.
    Very Helpful.
    Live Long
    Be safe and Well

great video. I'm going after the Traditional Ford Hot Rod Book. A 5 window Deuce coupe is something I have dreamed of since I was a kid. I was always a HD guy but now that I'm older (71) I now dream of the Pagotta City Coupe. I'm here almost every day and have been all over You Tube when I see a old hot rod video. I've been hanging around a speed shop lately and have been trying to pickup all the info I can from the guys.

Its a really good history lesson for everyone into automobile related. Im a GM guy and hotrod magazine has got everything. There must be thousands of edits of every performance engine that any hot rodder ever needed. That one magazine has had a huge influence on my car building and performance engines. Its great to see some of those really informative books. Love em 👍

Don't even own an old Ford at this point and I love just sitting and listening to Matt talk about the stuff, you can hear the passion for it in his voice. One of these days when I get out of the old Chevy phase I'd love to build a traditional Ford, really was getting into them when I was hanging out in East Carbon with Bo and his crew, Matt is bringing that passion back.

My favorite book is the Ford chassis manual. Forty years ago I purchased a large( about 10" thick) book from a parts jobber's closing sale that has all the tech information for the chassis for all the cars manufactured from the early teen's through the late forties. I paid $12 for it . I consider it my " find of a life time". Keep up the great work. Your video's make me smile.

After years of looking for one cheap, I finally bid the sour apple and bought a green bible off of ebay - but being a cheapscate (mostly due to the high import taxes), I found the cheapest one, made a lower offer, and got it! After weeks of waiting, it finally arrived (in Denmark, not Germany! ;-) )... but it ends at page 400, index goes to +774! Guess that's why, I got it cheap! X-D
Got all the reprints, as well as a signed Vern Tardel, and just ordered the V8 album off of
    fordv8foundation on ebay for $20.
Great video, always a pleasure to get further educated!

Back in the 80s my grandfather saw my hot rod books and started to tell me about a t he built in the 1930s that had been rear ended and being a boat builder /carpenter he turned it into a boat tail roadster with a hopped up motor which used chev valves (can't remember what else) that he used to hillclimb (race) and I noticed when you showed the t book there were kits which were probably the inspiration for that car. Great content and informative as usual

How to build a T-Bucket Roadster for under $3000. I still have this book. It is beat up but was well worth the purchase. It is now an E-Book you can purchase to down load.👀👍👍😎😎

Those are all really great books! My favourite is the "Green Bible". Well actually the Canadian version. It's called "Fast Moving Parts For All Ford Of Canada Products 1928 - 1949Catalogue". People often don't know what it is because it's not green. It's blue, orange and white. Another really great book is the Ford "Standard Hardware Catalogue". It has really great pictures and dimensions of every bolt, clip, pin, fitting, tab, nut, etc. It's really helpful if your trying to use the period correct parts.

My favorite book from this video is the "Green book". I have one and it is an absolutely great book. The information is something anybody who is into these cars should have. It's also fun to look at no matter what you're into. I had the pleasure of meeting Vern Tardel and touring his shop and orchard back in the 80s or 90s through a mutual friend. Amazing place. I'd love to have the book you're giving away.

    Books!
Hey, what other response would you expect from the son of two librarians?
The only stuff I have seen is the Vern Tardell's information.
I do remember reading a book from the public library back in the '60s when I was a kid. It had "Souping up..." in the title, but I don't remember exactly what it was called.
I also remember a book that showed how they built the molds for bubble tops like on an Ed Roth hot rod. Again, don't remember the title, but I remember the book. That was pretty cool for a nine year old kid to be able to get at the public library!
Thanks for the info, and Woof to Moon. I saw him wander by in the background.

That’s some great info, started my collection of manuals back in the late 80’s when I worked at a amaco station that had a bunch of old tech service manuals in the attic that my boss wanted tossed. Took home a bunch, and started hunting old factory ford service manuals for my cars. Alway great info in your videos!

I own a copy of souping the stock engine from 1950 by Floyd Clymer. My mom found it at a yard sale with a few vintage hot rod magazines, and it was just wild to look at what was the best tech in the day. Some of the pictures, adapting a trans to a motor it doesn't belong on, and they are just hogging new holes in the bell housing, doing what they need to do to make it happen.

Haha happy to get the knowledge out there to others! These old books are so valuable to have if you’re into this old stuff!

Always great to have books as a reference, one of the first things I do when staring on a new project. Enjoy your weekend.

The Vern Tardel book is what I'm using as a guide. I've been making a library for my build too. I'm late to seeing this video but I'm still throwing my hat in the ring for the book give away.
P.S. I think the term is "exploded view" when seeing a diagram of all the parts of something floating in place. Good video. Thanks again.

Pretty awesome matt, I'm loving the green bible, I've seen it around too, also love the ford album, my father was a walking ford album lol, but all those books are pretty neat man. I myself need to start collecting this stuff, I'm about your age I grew up around fat fenderd fords, but I unfortunately I got into racing, but know I find myself hot and heavy for old school hot rods.
I'd love a shoot at your book give away thanks for all you do matt!

Kick ass books! Knew the Vern T books were good and thanks for the info on the others. I like the Fast Ford handbook as I just got a ton of model T parts, enough to do a couple of cars out of, including a Rajo overhead conversion, so I am gonna have to get one!

Ford's parts system is based off the assembly line. The chassis is completed with hood and fenders and the body is added.

Like some other folks, I have none of those books so they would all be great to own. A favorite would be hard to name until I read them all.
But the one you are giving away would be a good start. ;)
Moon is pacing, waiting for you to finish so you can give him attention and treats.

Matt great information for the new to hotrods and us old guys too. I know this is a little off the Ford subject but I have a book that I found very helpful when starting out doing metal work and I still refer to it occasionally. You probably are familiar with it. It was written by Frank T. Sargent (he also did text books on the subject). It is called the Key to Metal Bumping. More good information from you as always so thanks.
