    Ok so no one seems to bring this up but, the iron born are Cthulhu vikings and thats fucking awesome. If you look through some of the other side stuff mainly the black stones from the sky cults you see Cthulhu is all up in GOT.

      @@KingNazaru First of all. There is no such thing as "European mythology". Secondly Cthulhu is literature inspired by mythology and folklore among other things, they're not mutually exclusive.

    • @KingNazaru
      @KingNazaru 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wolfgangwestmark5107 Well technically yes there is European Mythology. The Krakken originated in Norse myth which comes from the European mythology. As for the Cthulhu mythos/Yogsothothary references, that was before I learned more about the Song of Ice and Fire universe and how George was inspired by Lovecraft’s eldritch and nihilistic stories. So that one was my bad.

    I have great respect for George RR Martin view on life, and his great talent as an artist. Nothing but respect.
    But Martin - is anyone - should understand that violence and war is the way life works.
    Mankind is a people who have tried to eradicate each other since the early morning. And removing religion will not change it.
    To imagine a world where this was not so, where every crisis did not result in new atrocities, where every newspaper is not full of war and violence. Well, this is to imagine a world where human beings cease to be human.
    Humans Are Genetically Predisposed to Kill Each Other
    The rate of lethal violence is 7 times higher than the average for all mammals.

    I wonder why GRRM seems to have made the red god the one that is "true" at least, it's the only one that seems to have real power and the one that seems to be driving the plot forward. We've got some pretty different red priests though so it's hard to tell what the red god actually wants.

    • @CivilizationEx
      @CivilizationEx  8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +RainAngel111 I don't think any of the "gods" are real in his world, the red priests have power, but so do the Stark children, children of the forest, wildlings (skin changers) and others. Magic is real, the gods are probably not.

    • @SpiderkillersInc
      @SpiderkillersInc 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @TheDelethar
      @TheDelethar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CivilizationEx even the children believe in the gods tho that's the point of their trees right? Is everyone pretending or they just think their power comes from prayer? That whole many faced God stuff is meant to confirm in a god-human power granting deal in my opinion'

    • @CivilizationEx
      @CivilizationEx  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      TheDelethar GRRM is a well known secularist, I think he is drawing a parallel between their world and our world, in both miraculous things sometimes happen, and because people at the time cannot explain it, they create religions around some form of mythology to try and understand it. In the world of Westeros, there is magic, that is 100% confirmed, we've all seen it, but we've seen no evidence that any of their gods actually exists. The voices people hear in the weirwood trees, are other beings like the children or bloodraven or bran, using magic to communicate through them. No higher power is involved as far as we can see. Bran can start believing in the Red God if he wants too but he would still have these same powers. Look at a man like Qyburn, he doesn't worship any of the faiths as far as we know, and through rituals and his knowledge of magic he was able to resurrect the Mountain. So I think all the religious stuff of these books is actually a trick by GRRM to make us think the gods are responsible, when really it is just different forms of magic, being associated with higher powers.

    *You can have functional magic and no real gods, yet casters can still believe in gods,* not like most of them are actually questioning were their gifts really come from. Because as far as they know or believe it is the blessings of the gods, whom are real to them. Until *some form of the "scientific method"* (observation, hypothesis, test, results, conclusion etc.) becomes *more widely accepted among spell casters,* magic shall remain the domain of the "gods" and old powers...

      It's religions of Westeros. The Harpy is only worshipped in Slaver's Bay. A video on the other religions of Essos would be huge.

    Why do people assume that the Lord of Light is good? Lol Melissandra and Stanis did His will and used His magic by using sex magic (evil occult practice) on stanis with the shadow baby, blood magic (evil occult practice) with gendry, child sacrifice by burning stanis's daughter alive (evil occult practice) and other evil things. And The Lord of light's theme music is freaking evil and dark lmao TH-cam his song!
    Are people seriously assuming the great other is bad and R'hllor is good because his name says light in it?? Fools! Lol
    In the real world we name evil things with good names to trick people as well. Like "pro choice".

      Just about every religion in ASoIaF has some pretty screwed up practices, or have done some messed up and dumb things.
      Old Gods of the Forest: sacrificed people to weirwoods viscerally.
      The Seven: Andals invaded Westeros, and sluaghtered countless First Men and Children of the Forest out of fanaticism.
      Drowned God: Literally wants his people to rape and plunder.
      Lord of Light: Burns people alive.
      Many-Faced God: A freaking death cult.
      Needless to say, its intentionally meant to be grey areas.
      It's also a parallel to real world religions. In Christianity and Islam, God and Allah are considered to be the good guys, but they have a pretty bad streak, and have some fucked up passages.

    One has given us demon assassins, resurrection and prophecies that uphold till this point in the series.
    Another has given us Security Camera trees, Ability to warg into animals and telling of another race of people who practice very powerful magic
    The others have yet to do jack sh*t.

    "Ask me whatever you like."
    "The gods. Are they real?"
    "Yes and no."
    "What the hell that supposed to mean!?"
    "The so called 'Gods' that the people worship are real but they aren't exactly gods."
    "The Seven?"
    "The Seven are nothing but concepts. They were created by the andals in order to give the people something to worship.
    "What?"
    "Everyone worships something, your uncle Stannis worships duty, your father worships battle, Ned stark worships honor and your mother worships power. The seven is basically something for people to worship, you can't live without believing in something. And belief is a form of worship."
    "The Old Gods?"
    "You already met one, he even gave you a sword."
    "Wait what? The Bloodraven is a old god?"
    "No. Brynden Rivers died decades ago, that thing using his body is what you could call a old god."
    "I don't understand."
    "There are many things you will never fully understand Raziel. Any other question?"
    "The drowned god?"
    "HAHAHAHA!. That thing is not a god, is a creature and is getting pretty paranoid lately. I guess he realised that It's days are numbered."
    "What?"
    "I can't tell you, but don't worry. You and you're friend Theon will be there to watch it die."
    "R'hllor's?"
    "He's not a god, He's a Demon and he has a pretty strange interest in you."
    "What do you mean?"
    "Remember when Melisandre said that you were beautiful to her? There's a strange aura surrounding you and I suspect it was his doing."

    What do the different religions believe about life after death? The Faith of R'hllor and The Old Gods doesn't seem to have any beliefs concerning the afterlife. People who have been resurrected claim that there isn't anything after death and that what is waiting us is "nothing"

    • @TheDelethar
      @TheDelethar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Spiderkillers, Inc it's more probable that in their world there in fact is just nothing after death, I only say that because even in the real world people have a multitude of crazy story's of what happened when they died and came back and all sorts of things but not in this world and that's made clear for a reason, even gods having power that men can use like the many faced God and that flaming sword or red priestess powers is clear because everyone's always saying they don't have power, their gods will their desires to be

    • @sirnilsolav6646
      @sirnilsolav6646 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spiderkillers, Inc I think that would make some sense, since if there really was nothing then how come they remember that there was nothing? If their consciousness ceased to be, then how can they remember the nothing?
      But seeing how the show is so anti-religious (the books not being too keen on them either), it would make sense for atheism to be true.
      However, that doesn't answer what these faiths BELIEVE happens after you die.

    I may be wrong but this how I see it. Originally, the seven gods were just humans and seven humans will replace them: Jon is the Father, Daeneris is the Mother, Sansa is the Maid, Lady Olenna (the thorns queen) is the Crone, Lady Brienne is the warrior, Gendry is the Smith and Arya is theStranger. Together, they will have to face the white walkers to save the seven kingdoms. "Seven" has always been a magical number. But what about Sam? He's very important too. He keeps reading and he learns things the others don't know.

    • @yvesbuonomano6219
      @yvesbuonomano6219 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tyrion and Sam are important characters for sure. Bran is an important character but he's already the three-eyed crow. And he knows about Jon now. How are they going to reach the wall before the dead swarm in? I can't wait for season 7 to see what's next!

      The Old Gods = Druidic spirits
      The Faith of the Seven = Roman Catholic Christianity
      Drowned God = monotheistic Asatru (Old Norse Gods [Odin, Thor, and Loki])
      R'hllor = Zoroastrianism
      Many-Faced God = ?

      I always thought of R'hllor as Christianity. I mean it is in some ways, so is the Faith of the Seven. It is a parallel to the Holy Trinity, Three and One. Seven and One.

    • @hairybotter

      Old gods relate to religions like Hinduism which is the oldest surviving religion of the world.
      The faith of the Seven relates to Christianity.
      And The faith of R'hllor to Islam.
