The pacemaker was actually invented in Canada by John Hopps in 1949 but not very practical for use in humans until a decade later. In 1950 it was a boxy item with wires inserted via a catheter to the heart capable of both defibrillating and pacing the heart rhythm. Sweden developed the first "implantable' battery run pacemaker.
The presenter missed one hugely important thing about the seat belt, Volvo made the patent free for everyone to use. They decided that the invention was so significant, it had more value as a free life saving tool than something to profit from.
And I know Natasha was probably joking when she said we didn't know that but lots of people in Europe knew it was introduced (and made patent-free) by Volvo. Probably a lot of USA's car nuts - what we call petrolhead - knew it too. .

Here's an invention you won't hear about on any TH-cam video. My great grandfather Douglas Andrew Billany (1865 - 1918) was half English and half Swedish and born here in England. He invented _Stocks and Dies_ which was patented in 1902. It cuts threads on iron rods etc. In other words, it turns iron rods into screws, bolts etc. His second eldest son, Walter Billany (1891 - 1968) took the patent to the USA when he emigrated in 1915 and the Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan was the first to use it. My great uncle Walter became an American citizen in 1922 and originally worked for Ford and his descendants still live in the USA inc. Juliette Van Otteren who is a renowned photographer whose name appears in the Who's Who of American women. She's a blue eyed blonde like her Swedish ancestors. So there's another connection between Sweden 🇸🇪, the UK 🇬🇧 and the USA. 🇺🇲
As others have mentioned, Swedish-American (one of the many Swedes who emigrated to America in the 1800s) John Ericsson invented the propeller. He aldo constructed the USS Monitor, famous from the civil war. Fun Volvo fact. When American Irv Gordon in 1966 picked up his brand new Volvo P1800 at the dealership he fell in love with it so completely that he just couldn't stop driving it. When he passed away in 2018 he had driven it 3.2 million miles, and obliterated all sorts of car mileage records. There is no stopping a Volvo!
I've always loved the fact that the particular Volvo model with this well known record in fact was the P1800, the most beautiful Volvo model ever created.
Not only did Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) donate enough, that after his death the Nobel Prize was created as described in his will, but he had another 335 patents during his lifetime.
Great video :) There is a musical called "Kristina Från Duvemåla" about a couple who emigrate from Sweden to America during the 1700 or 1800s, due to the poverty and such in Sweden during this time. I especially recommend reacting to the songs "Du måste finnas" by Helen Sjöholm, and "Guldet blev till Sand" by Peter Jöback. There should be versions with English subtitles on youtube, there are also English versions of these songs but I can't remember their names.
Hi! I am a proud Swede, I know all of this inventions and I really enjoy your reactions, because in Sweden we have; "The Jante-lagen" and it means that you can not brag about something you have done really well. It will perhaps make other people angry with you, it`s better to hold a low profile and let people figure it out themselves that you have make an amazing invention. That`s why nobody knows it comes from Sweden. By the way, I really like your videos. You two are so loveable, make me smile and feel proud of myself and my country!
I live pretty close to the factory that made the matches. Btw: VOLVO came out of another company called SKF in my hometown. They invented self aligning ball baerings. 🇸🇪
The two engineers that started Volvo were employees at SKF. As a parting gift from SKF they were given the rights to the name Volvo which was the name of one of the ball bearing products that SKF made but had discontinued.
As a swede I thank you for your admiration of our small but adventurous country. Yes. We have been pretty good at inventing really really useful things. Well not me personally of course but videos like this lets us burst out in national pride once in a while. Well needed since we can be a bit in the introvert side 😁. May I also add that despite our mere 10 million strong population we are the worlds 3rd biggest music export after the US, 360 million and the UK, 55 million strong populations and have more hits on the US pop top 50 of all time than any other country counting artists and song writers/producers. 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Two other Swedish inventors who I think fit very well among the others are Carl Linnæus and Johan (John) Ericsson. Linnæus was the author of the "Systema Naturæ", the system of description and classification of plants and animals that is still used today. You have probably heard of Johan Ericsson, but didn't know that he was was a Swedish naval captain and engineer. He is usually considered the inventor of the first working propeller. He was also the man behind the gunboat Monitor with its rotating cannon tower which fought the Confederates Merrimack in the battle of Hampton Roads during the Civil War 💀🫣.
Love you guys :) it’s so fun to watch you react to swedish things. :) when i was young i always wish I was an american, but you make me a proud swede ;)
Just too let you know, I am watching this on TV. Still haven’t figured out the TV for pressing the like button. I am enjoying your tour around the world. Thanks Ladies. ❤️🇺🇸🙏🇬🇧🇺🇸
Super interesting and I didn't know Spotify was Swedish as well. I want to try the match and zipper trick, hopefully it doesn't result in a burning sensation down there.
As a convenient segue from the Coca-Cola bottle, did you know that the modern image of Santa Claus (rose-y cheeks, big ol' belly, wears all-red and full of jolly) was imagined by Haddon Sundblom, an American artist with Swedish and Finnish parents? He drew him specifically to promote Coca-Cola for Christmas season when he was working for Coca-Cola in 1931.
Not sure if you want to learn more about the Swedish military, but if so I would recommend the 'Jägare' series, about the Swedish Rangers. In 16 episodes you will follow a group of conscripts from their very first day until they graduate. A really good series. One thing though, try to reach out to the community to see if someone can translate at least the 5- 6 first episode, since they lack subtitles. (And I am sure that you will find someone) Nice reaction...as always!
Ultrasound diagnostics was pioneered in Glasgow, Scotland because it was used in the shipyards. Ian Donald, Tom Brown, and John McVicar collaborated with Lund Uni. I know because I catalogued the archive with another John (don't know his second name) who hand made the first units. He went to Sweden a lot.
The safety matches is an invention that many people associate with Sweden. In Italian matches are most commonly called "fiammiferi", but an other word used is "svedesi" meaning Swedish (things).
I am proud to be Swedish, considering what a small country Sweden is, we have still achieved a lot! It's fun that you take the time to explore our little country, now you might understand that not everything comes from "the big country in the west"! Thumbs up from me! Johan
Thank you Sweden, love learning so much about this wonderful Country. Interesting on the seatbelt as in the UK Volvo has long been associated with safety and reliability I wonder if that came from the seatbelt.
9:43 Alexander Samuelsson, who had emigrated from Surte in Västergötland to the USA a few years earlier, led the design work at the company Root Glass Company. His team won the competition and the bottle went into production in 1916 in Terra Haute, Indiana.

Its not just that Celsius is another tremperature scale. It is the temperature scale that fits the metric system - 1 watt of electric power over one hour heats 1 litre of water 1°C. And thats how the cookie crumbles.

@@moondaughter1004 He also made huge improvements to, invented even, smokeless gunpowder. Something that allows larger projectiles to be fired faster and further, and with more consistent accuracy. Something very much used for war. His uncomfort, even shame, knowing that many of his inventions were used for war, lead to him creating the Nobel Prize, including the Peace Prize awarded by a norwegian committee.
The also made the patent to the three point seat belt to an open patent for all to use. The GPS is also a Swedish invention. The adjustable Wrench and Dynamite is also made by Swedes

Amazing! I knew zero of these facts!! My claims to Sweden… my first album ABBA Arrival and my Volvo, he drives like a dream. PS. Natasha when you come to Australia you can borrow my Volvo, take the top down and cruise the Great Ocean Rd with a Natasha and Debbie sticker… Well done Sweden ❤❤
I enjoyed that too, among other things You would have run into that is also invented in Sweden You will find, modern propeller for boats, Bluetooth, Dynamite (Alfred Nobel You know Nobel price), hose clamp, Tetra brick (Packaging), Laminate flooring, Lucas device (automated CPR) The Dahlén light (lighthouses) and of course many more, computor mouse for instance. Greetings from Sweden
Spoiler': You did mention dynamite in the beginning of the video and yes dynamite was invented by Alfred Nobel. Later he found out how much people hated him for it when his brother died and people had thought that Alfred had died. After reading the news about his death he decided to donate his money to what now is The Nobel Price. Love the natasha and debbie show :)
Fun facts. The Bronx district in New York was developed by a Swedish immigrant named Jonas Bronck. Bronck=Bronx. And the American Indian motorcycle company was founded by Swedish Oscar Hedström. And there are so many more things developed and invented by Swedes.
It did sound as he was going to say fat 🤣🤣🤣… You two are just so wonderful, awesome personalities and your videos are always great. Much love from 🇸🇪❤️!
This was fun to watch. As a Swede I know about most of these inventions, but not all. And there are many more to discover so please try to find another video.
Another invention of big importance was the " kakelugn ", ceramic tile stove around 1750. It saved the swedish forests from going up the chimney. It could store the heat very efficiently. Later the AGA was another similar idea
Pretty fun that such a small country as Sweden has impacted the world in such a large scale as it has.. ALSO we should not forget how much Swedish immigrants has done for the US, such as the Greyhound-buses, Walgreens, Nordstrom, Swanson etc
Great video and fun, happy-go-lucky couple. *Btw, the Swedish inventions in this clip are just for starters.* There are several additional, groundbreaking and revolutionary inventions and scientific discoveries that come out of Sweden. Which, in all honesty, has a really tiny population.
Hi girls 👋❤️ maybe you should check out something that we use a lot in Sweden, it's called swish, it's a way that we send money to friends or pay with. It's so practical and easy. Have a great day! 🇸🇪🤗🤗 Oh almost forgot.. Alfred Nobel invented dynamite. He's the founder of the Nobel price. It's coming up now in Dec 10.
@@TheNatashaDebbieShow Swish has essentially eliminated the practice of splitting the bill at Swedish restaurants. Nowadays one person usually pays the whole bill, and then the others swish that person their individual share of the bill.
Sweden was the first country in the world that had a free mandatory 6 year school for all children, in 1842. In that way the teachers could pick the clever ones for further studies and give them further free studies, even if the childrens parents were poor. In this way Sweden got many more engineers, doctors, teachers, administrators, business owners and so on. Some of the engineers became successful inventors. That’s how the long tradition of many inventions per capita started in Sweden.
As someone working for a medical company that spawned out of a older company that revolutionized diabetes treatment, yes Sweden also is responsible for creating the dialysis machine that is used to treat end stage diabetes patients.
"is used to treat end stage diabetes patients"?. You mean to treat kidney failure (which some Diabetics, like me got). But it's a none 'end stage' of life, and a lot of other people also get kidney failures. I have done dialysis for 1.5 year now and expect to get a new kidney before the summer. So please explain your later example in more details. But didn't know it was a a Swedish invention ;)
@@Erriond Sounds great that you got the chance to get a new kidney, they are also working on artificial kidneys now. But that is what I know not something that is available yet. Sadly not very many patients that has end stage diabetes (no working kidneys) have the opportunity to actually get a donated one. And even for those who get it, the case of kidney failure of the donated one is not zero. So for most patients being connected to a dialysis machine until the end of their life is the sad reality for many.
if you could strike the match on your zipper they were not safety matches but regular friction matches, the safety matches have the phosphorous on a strip that's on the side of the match box and not in the match head so they do not light from friction.
About (one of the) ultrasound technology pioneers: As I have been told, engineering genius Hellmuth Hertz was in an American war prisoner camp after ww2, but weren't allowed to stay in the US for political reasons. Niels Bohr (friends with Hellmuth's father, Gustav, Nobel laureate 1925) and some Swedish physicists snatched him up and were able to make sure that he could continue his education in Lund, Sweden, were he later became professor in electrical measurement technology. He was also involved in pioneering the inkjet printing technology
As a Swede I did of course knew about the SEAT belt. What they forgot to mention in the video was that the inventor and Volvo did an open patent for the seat belt so that any car manufacturer cpuld use it wothout cost. Since it save lives Volvo thought that it would be free.
That was so interesting, the things you learn along with you two lovely girlies. The only one I did know was the seat belt but I don't remember why or where I heard it 😅 great video again keep being just you xx
Fahrenheit is also the last name of the inventor. Actually all four temperature scales, Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin , and Rankine are named after their inventors' last names
Ball bearings, spotify, Ikea, Tetra Pak, respirator, dynamite (Alfred Nobel, the novel price), the wrench, the GPS system for positioning, the milk separator, xylocain and many more..❤🇸🇪
One thing you did miss: The AGA lighthouse was invented by the Swedish inventor Gustaf Dalén in the early 1900s. Gustaf Dalén was known for his technical innovations and the AGA lighthouse, an automatic lighthouse, was one of his significant inventions. The AGA lighthouse was introduced to the market and quickly became a world leader in maritime marking and improved maritime safety.
Hello, just want to say amazing video and very interesting.. I didn't even know any of these things were from Sweden... I live in Sweden lol 😃 (And sorry if my English is a bit bad, sometimes I don't remember how to write or how to spell things)
And even better for a company that makes ball bearings. They only started to make cars to prove to other car manufacturers their bearings were any good.
Honorable mention: STDMA, improved radar and collision avoidance system for boats and airplanes. It basically eliminated airplane mid-air collisions after it was made a world standard in 2004.

A small note on Skype… as some may know, Microsoft for a while had 2 products called Skype and Skype for business. Contrary to the name they both were totally different products with different underpinnings. When Teams came out and saved everyone during the pandemic they scrapped Skype for business that was formerly known as Lync before Microsoft bought it and replaced the modern underpinnings with Skype technology! So Microsoft Teams is now built on the same Skype platform as today’s consumer Skype, with added corporate controls of course. But the base for todays Teams is original Skype 😊

The ball baerings by SKF really should be on all these Swedish inventions lists, such an important item that's been used everywhere since.
Wow that was interesting, always good to learn new things. Thank you Sweden.
Most of us do use his "noble name" Carl von Linné instead of Carl/Carolus Linnaeus. 😊
Great video, so funny. I tried the match on the zipper once, lol. Love it. Thank you, natasha and Debbie for all of your videos
Don't play with matches, there we said it. 😀
Sweden actually ranks above the US in global innovation. This according to the global innovation index. It’s 2nd behind Switzerland, US is third.
(And I am sure that you will find someone)
Nice reaction...as always!
About time to discover the jewel that Sweden is! Love you both!
Volvo has/have had tons of patents in automotive safety!

Alexander Samuelsson, who had emigrated from Surte in Västergötland to the USA a few years earlier,
led the design work at the company Root Glass Company. His team won the competition and the bottle
went into production in 1916 in Terra Haute, Indiana.
You shouldnt apologize for not uploading in holiday times.
Holidays are very much "you-time" and _everyone_ need to respect that.
As much as you have your viewers to thank for the channels success, the viewer have you to thank for the content.
This is a partnership, neither owns the other.
Keep up the good work.
All the best from Sweden.
Its not just that Celsius is another tremperature scale. It is the temperature scale that fits the metric system - 1 watt of electric power over one hour heats 1 litre of water 1°C. And thats how the cookie crumbles.
Yes isn’t Sweden great!? Nice that you dig in to it. I also learned a lot. I knew some but learned some too. Easy to get ”home-blind”. Inventions and stuff. Keep up exploring the countries of the world. A big hug to you both! 🤗
Spherical ball bering, inveted in sweden, used in most stuff that rolls today.
Yes.. ❤❤
Yes, they did invent dynamite. It was a man named Alfred Nobel.
Yep the man behind the Nobel prize
Also dynamite was invented for mining purposes. Not for war
Mr Alfred Nobel. My home town proudest historic person (Karlskoga) If you visit Sweden, don’t forget to visit his old mansion that is a museum today.
That’s why he created Noble foundation. He wanted to give back to humanity as he regretted his invention used in war.
You guys are hilarious! Had a smile on my face during the entire video :D
The also made the patent to the three point seat belt to an open patent for all to use. The GPS is also a Swedish invention. The adjustable Wrench and Dynamite is also made by Swedes
Håkan Lanz didn't invent GPS. But he uses satellite navigation (GPS) and radio communication to increase safety so that craft do not collide. The system is called STDMA, which stands for "self-organizing time division multiple access". In 2004 it was adopted as the world standard in aviation.
Amazing! I knew zero of these facts!! My claims to Sweden… my first album ABBA Arrival and my Volvo, he drives like a dream.
PS. Natasha when you come to Australia you can borrow my Volvo, take the top down and cruise the Great Ocean Rd with a Natasha and Debbie sticker…
Well done Sweden ❤❤
I enjoyed that too, among other things You would have run into that is also invented in Sweden You will find, modern propeller for boats, Bluetooth, Dynamite (Alfred Nobel You know Nobel price), hose clamp, Tetra brick (Packaging), Laminate flooring, Lucas device (automated CPR) The Dahlén light (lighthouses) and of course many more, computor mouse for instance. Greetings from Sweden
Spoiler':
You did mention dynamite in the beginning of the video and yes dynamite was invented by Alfred Nobel. Later he found out how much people hated him for it when his brother died and people had thought that Alfred had died. After reading the news about his death he decided to donate his money to what now is The Nobel Price.
Love the natasha and debbie show :)
Gotta say I love your dynamic, you are so fun to watch :)
Fun facts. The Bronx district in New York was developed by a Swedish immigrant named Jonas Bronck. Bronck=Bronx. And the American Indian motorcycle company was founded by Swedish Oscar Hedström. And there are so many more things developed and invented by Swedes.
It did sound as he was going to say fat 🤣🤣🤣…
You two are just so wonderful, awesome personalities and your videos are always great.
Much love from 🇸🇪❤️!
As a Swede, I suddenly feel very patriotic after watching this video 😁😁😁🥰🥰🥰
This was fun to watch. As a Swede I know about most of these inventions, but not all. And there are many more to discover so please try to find another video.
Another invention of big importance was the " kakelugn ", ceramic tile stove around 1750. It saved the swedish forests from going up the chimney. It could store the heat very efficiently. Later the AGA was another similar idea
A great video, very informative and humorous. Really enjoyable! 😀💖
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bluetooth, ball bearing and refrigerator you all have in your kitchen are also inventions coming from Sweden. 😊
Pretty fun that such a small country as Sweden has impacted the world in such a large scale as it has.. ALSO we should not forget how much Swedish immigrants has done for the US, such as the Greyhound-buses, Walgreens, Nordstrom, Swanson etc
I actually live in that small town where the cocacola design is from and now that glasmelltery is a museum :)
Oh almost forgot.. Alfred Nobel invented dynamite. He's the founder of the Nobel price. It's coming up now in Dec 10.
Great idea!!
Yes we know, it was a joke 😃
About (one of the) ultrasound technology pioneers:
As I have been told, engineering genius Hellmuth Hertz was in an American war prisoner camp after ww2, but weren't allowed to stay in the US for political reasons.
Great video I did not know what came out of Sweden apart from ABBA love it and now I know very interesting loved to see some more videos like this one
Love it. See you on Friday for the premier. Big hug from Girona Spain.
Can't wait!
The great thing about the three point seat belt is that Volvo allowed the design to be used by all car manufacturers.
Really great video really informative about the stuff that was invented ❤
good morning everyone, have a continued nice day
god morgon alla, ha en bra dag
Fahrenheit is also the last name of the inventor. Actually all four temperature scales, Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin , and Rankine are named after their inventors' last names
Don't forget the refrigerator that was invented by two Swedish students, Baltzar von Platen and Carl Munters in 1922.
Ball bearings, spotify, Ikea, Tetra Pak, respirator, dynamite (Alfred Nobel, the novel price), the wrench, the GPS system for positioning, the milk separator, xylocain and many more..❤🇸🇪
I only knew one ..... The telephone hand set. Great vid ladies
As from Sweden, I just laughed and enjoyed this video, didn't know this even for myself 😅
Very clever folks the Sweeds👍🌹🤗
Fun fact; the Swedish car company Volvo, the name is actually Latin for "I"m rolling" which is a good name for a car 😊
The Blowtorch, invented/patented in 1882 by Carl Richard Nyberg. Later, the company was bought by his business partner Max Sievert (who was also best friend to LM Ericsson) and is now simply called Sievert.
Im from sweden :) and i really like your videos :D
The supercharger for engines is a Swedish invention by Alf Lysholm. was patented in Sweden in 1935.
The Coke logo was made by a danish guy. It contains the danish flag. 😊
Another fun fact about the pacemaker. The first patient who gets the pacemaker lived longer than the inventor of the pacemaker.
You were both in a fun mood for this one.

@@ejanger Precis vi Svenskar är smarta. Resten av världen borde lyssna på oss. Vi ser ju vad som hände under pandemi. De skulle ha lyssna på oss.
was a swedish woman that discovered i dont know the name for it but it was for safety load for the gunpowder for the cannons so it could be used during rain . witch ofc all countries around the world used even the american cannons during the american independence war
Recommendation from a swede. The program "Allt för sverige (all for sweden)". About americans with swedish heritage traveling to sweden, learning about the culture and finally competing to get to meet their Swedish relatives. Some seasons should be on TH-cam!
A swede invented the coat hanger hook. Such a small thing that everyone have in their home
Samuelsson, who designed the Coca Cola bottle, was indeed Swedish and he worked at Surte glasbruk (English: ”Surte glassworks”, Surte is a small village close to Göteborg), very close to where I live, by the way, but the moved to the US and that's where he designed that bottle, so he didn't live in Sweden when he did that.
Great video again girls.
Fahrenheit was also named after a physicist
Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. ❤
The safetymatch you cant light on a zipper.. Only on the box, hense the safety... 😅❤❤
Ikea, Saab, Volvo, Ericson, Skype, Minecraft are all Swedish. Inventions: Adjustable wrench, Computer mouse, cashless payments, Rear loader, Bluetooth, bolt scissors, frigolite, ball bearings, propeller, the pipe wrench, harvester, the tetra pak, respirators, the atm machines, etc, etc.
Color graphics for computers.
The green and red handset button on mobile phone is also a swedish invention
You are so funny 😂😂. But yes, you have just scratch the surfes. It's not strange that you didn't know about these things. Even I don't think about them as Swedish inventions. Maybe just the Coke bottle, because the inventor came from a glasmill a little north of Gothenburg calld Surte, and he moved to the U.S. The bottle was in his mind the shape of a womans body. I really like your chanal.
XOXO
Lotta Uhlmann
Gothenburg Sweden 🎉🎉🎉
More modern inventions that came out off sweden: the computer mouse, Bluetooth, Candy crush & Minecraft
I thought he was gonna say really fat too 😂😂😂 lovely video ❤
You have to do more videos from that series. Not Swedish (Scottish) and not watched any of the videos. That was really interesting x x x
And do not forget that the classic red and white Coca-Cola Santa Claus was also designed by a swedish-american. His name was Haddon Sundblom!
Håkan Lans invented the colour grafics for computors and the GPS system. Among other things
