Im 44 and remember my parents listening to this on drives to the Jersey Shore, my father's gone now, and the music means more than ever. The lyrics of this era speak to emotions that society lacks now. Bring it back and keep the music alive
This song has touched my soul in a way very few others ever have. So much heartbreak here, a feeling that resonated throughout my youth. The video fits the lyrics so perfectly. Thanks for the heart-stirring nostalgia.
Thank you! I have loved this for 50 years and it is the first time I have seen all of the poignant lyrics. I did not know til today that he was 16 when he wrote this. Seems to throw him into precocious genius category. Best song I have ever heard about unrequited love in any genre.
In high school during the late sixtys this song haunted me whenever I heard it. While driving home from work one summer evening 1968 listening on the AM radio ( WFLI or WGOW ) the DJ commented that this was a song about the singer's lost dog "Renee". I suspected he was being sarcastic, but still--the image of Renee, the lost dog, saddened me even more than the songwriter's lost lover. BTW, check out Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy's 2006 cover on "Adieu False Heart" album.
I lost my hearing in Vietnam in the 1960s. I have been singing this song wrong for over 50 years. I cried when I sang it wrong and I cry more now that I know the words. Has to be one of the top 10 songs of all time
How Beautiful!❤️ I love this song too I was a little girl when my Dad went to Vietnam… I loved him and became a nurse and joined the Army in 1980 . I’m 65 this year and this song reminds me of my Dad .
Renee Johanna Mine never sang but as a child in the 50's he shared 3 things with me..."Don't drink Coca-Cola, Watch TV, and Don't believe everything you read".
I remember walking down the street listening to this song on my transistor radio. I was still in high school. It was probably 1967 the girl I wanted to date was Mandy. I asked her out but I got turned down. I got depressed but my sister said look she’s the one missing out because your a good guy. Thanks Sis for always having my back! I miss you!
I remember listening to this song in about 1967. I remember it because there was a girl I wanted to date. I finally found the courage to ask her out but she turned me down. I got depressed but my sister said Look she’s the one missing out because your a nice guy. Thanks Sis for always having my back.
Renee means "rebirth" I think this song is about Christ and his refusal to engage in violence even in the face of violence, instead choosing to walk away... in doing so exalted. It is a beautiful work of poetry.
I read a musician's breakdown once, something about the style of chord progression is supposedly something you rarely hear, and it has a name which I think may be "baroque rock".
Written by a 16 year old and sung by a 17 year old. Just amazing haunting song. One hears tears of pain.
A beautiful, haunting song. Steve Martin Caro's voice fits it perfectly. God bless the hearts and souls of The Left Banke performers.

This Was an old song I heard when I was Very young, Loved it,
unrequited love inspires beautiful songs... like this one.
Relatable.
When you are 17 a broken heart hurts much more than when you are older ❤
I hope that when I am old, I can reminisce about a love song as great and beautiful as this. I probably won't. I'll just reminisce about this one.
I still Remember this Song From my "Childhood."
I Heard This Song when I was a very young kid, And I "Related" To It!!!
Great job. Thanks. Steve's voice is otherworldly.

My husband sings it to me when I leave the room, it was the only way my new boss could remember my name.
hauntingly beautiful and melancholy

Fantastic...
"Greatest" = debatable. In the running, definitely - esp within the genre.
"🎶Just walk Renee..."

You put a lot of effort into your videos. Thank you.
HistoricusJoe, I am almost positive this song had a huge influence on the Baroque-Rock band "The Mandrake Memorial".
First time hearing this song. 😊
forever young!
you know i sing this song with a British accent Andrea loves IT
What is it about this song that makes it so appealing?
I think it's the way it begins, like already in a thought.
I read a musician's breakdown once, something about the style of chord progression is supposedly something you rarely hear, and it has a name which I think may be "baroque rock".
