    This game deserves WAY more attention and praise than it has currently. One of my absolute favorites.

  • @NiiRubra

    At first I thought they had gone for a more ambient soundtrack (which actually makes sense, the ambient music improves the creepy mood of System Shock), and I was a bit sad because I enjoyed the electronic midis of the original, but then I got to the combat soundtrack... Holy crap it goes pretty hard. I like how they managed to do both.

    • @NiiRubra
      @NiiRubra ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I feel that Mick Gordon's work had an influence in the combat tracks, it's not the sort of thing that you'd hear in Doom Eternal, but it has a similar essence, it's noisy and visceral, very industrial.

    • @Lastofthemohaggens
      @Lastofthemohaggens ปีที่แล้ว +25

      It's neither bad music nor as fully atmospheric as I feared in the combat tracks, but other than Cyberspace, almost none of the others really feel like proper representation of the music tracks. Occasionally hearing a few bars of the original melody in the back of the combat track isn't really the same. The original ost was both really good and had a lot potential for remixing when using modern hardware to make and play it, so I can't help but feel disappointed.

    • @godfrey4461
      @godfrey4461 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@Lastofthemohaggens Original ost is a bit to loud for the pace of the new game. And to be brutally honest, it never fit the theme of the original game either. Game is as depressing and bleak as can be, meanwhile the music is blaring in your ear like you're playing doom. Just never meshed well imo.

    • @Green--X
      @Green--X ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@godfrey4461 I completely disagree, if it was System Shock 2 then maybe, but System Shock 1 was much more fast paced and bizarre in comparison. Infact, I would argue that the soundtrack CARRIED a lot of the backtracking and tedium of the original since the music was so unique and such an ear worm. If it was just this depressing drone ambience instead, I think players would get bored MUCH quicker.

    I love how everyone unanimously loves the executive themes because I remember being SHOOK when I was playing through the game hearing these themes. Like it’s the kind of music that makes you really feel like some shit is going down. Glad everyone else feels the same way. Opulence and Ostentation is just the kind of track that really makes you feel like you’re progressing.

    I really love how as the game progresses and the hacker gets closer to challenging Shodan the guitar becomes a stronger and stronger part of the tracks, beginning to overpower the electronic instruments that dominated the early game tracks. The clash and struggle between the hacker represented by the guitar and Shodan represented by the electronic instruments reflects the games progress in a really beautiful and interesting way. The differences between the combat and base tracks of each area really highlight this as during downtime the guitar is more present, the hacker has room to breathe, prepare and improve. Whereas in the combat tracks deep bassy synths, overpowering synth leads and electric drums completely swamp the guitar. Combat is where Shodan exerts control and it isn't until later tracks where the guitar begins to fight for an even footing in the mixing. In combat tracks the guitar lingers under and sweeps in and out with gasping breaths while caught in the wave of synthetic instruments until Flight Deck, Executive and Systems Engineering when the guitar begins to find a powerful voice.

      @@ut0p1an_dyst0p1a The OST for this game is on bandcamp, but sadly, a lot of the motifs mentioned in the OP are not present in this OST mix, for reasons unknown. That logic tracks, because the beta grove has zero guitars. Because that place SHODAN's playground, she holds all the cards, and it has so much contamination that literally nowhere in there feels safe. So when you finally jettison it, it's a huge middle finger to SHODAN, and marks the point where she goes from condescending disdain to absolutely seething. I love it!!

      For what it is worth, the soundtrack is very closely reminiscent of all the original themes, all they have done is bridge the gap between the almost intrusive DOS midi soundtracks of yesteryear, and the subtle background ambience we have come to expect in our modern new-fangled games.
      It's really hard to put into words what they have done, but imagine if Pink Floyd had been tasked with the challenge of toning down Katy Perry just a tiny weeny little bit, I mean to say that DOS game soundtracks were in your face is something of an understatement.

    @NickSuda ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't understand why people are sleeping on this soundtrack so much. Obviously it's apples to oranges with the original, there's no crazy live multichannel procedural MIDI blending thing going on, but it's a REALLY great soundtrack. The NIN influence is really strong in both versions; the 1994 one is just more "Pretty Hate Machine" where the 2023 one is a bit more Berlin-era Bowie, Tangerine Dream, "Ghosts I-IV", Dragon Tattoo soundtrack type shit. and the composer makes nice, nuanced use of a handful of themes from the original soundtrack. idk, I just hear a lot of folks talk about this game like there's no music at all or that what's there is bad and literally neither of those things are true.
    I love the sort of "Steve Vai, ebow in space" thing, it very much gives early 90s cyberpunk. I like the way it takes on djentier, Doom 2016-ish elements without becoming really tacky, overdone dubstep that many composers tend to score contemporary cyberpunk stuff with. It's just a straightforward soundtrack as opposed to a fancy interactive thing, but it's a damn good soundtrack that matches the updated game perfectly.

    Well
    First of all, that ost performed rly good. I especially like smooth transition from non-combat themes to combat.
    But if feels pretty... generic. Like most of the idle themes can fit in other games and settings. Like you can put It into something like R6 Siedge menu or Battletech game and they will fit just fine
    So, ost dont feel that It belongs to sci-fi game. Olny in some combat themes you can hear electronic bits like bips, clicks, beats, etc.
    Im comparing It with SS2 ost, and SS2's one completely obliterate this in terms of sci-fi atmosphere, combat tension, feel of unsettle.
    SSR ost feels mostly relaxing, even combat themes gives you feel like "oh, thats combat music, oh, thats an enemy"
    Aaaand SS2 ost speaks clearly: you gonna suffer and there's no cover
    Again, its not bad ost, at all, but not exactly sci-fi one, not distinctable like SS2 ost

      SS2’s OST is mostly just drum and bass with rock guitar and some moody atmospheric music. It slaps but is a product of its time.

      I get what you mean with the ambient themes. I think this soundtrack leans a little too hard into guitar with delay pedal. It's probably meant to be an homage to Prey, but Prey had a lot more sonic diversity and didn't use delay pedal this much.
      But I disagree with holding up SS2 soundtrack as this wholly unique "sci-fi" sound. It seems like you don't listen to much D&B, jungle, techno, or industrial because SS2's soundtrack could not be any more a product of those genres of that time. Incredible compositions but hardly distinctive sound or particularly sci-fi, the fact that it's so emblematic of electronic music of its era is partially why it's so memorable. A cyberpunk game paired with 90s rave music hits the same kind of sweet dissonance that the Fallout games do for me, with their post-apocalyptic leatherpunk aesthetic mixed with 50s pop.

    This soundtrack would be great if I could actually hear it in the game. A lot of the atmospheric tracks when there's no combat going on were way too quiet and barely made an impact for me. I have to believe it must have been a bug or something for the music to be so quiet in-game when the original game had a bunch of incredibly catchy and impressive tracks.

    While the Elevator music is about as perfect as it can be, I wonder what happened here with the rest of the System Shock music?
    The original game had such a catchy and iconic soundtrack and it's mostly absent throughout the game. It's not that the music is bad but it's just holding itself back and even barely there during most of the game play. The music playback is also heavily leaning on the ambient tracks.
    The choice to go with ambient music is what I have most problem with as instead of creating scary or oppressive atmosphere most of the time the music just kind of is there minding its own thing in the background. System Shock 2 pulled the ambient tracks so incredibly well that playing a any of the tracks instantly sets the mood. Here I get... nothing.

    I loved original sshk soundtrack, i also loved enhanced remix. This one through out the game went a bit unnoticed by me. During game play i really missed the original tune. Not that this one is bad, but came a bit too ambient for my taste. Only 3 tracks really got my attention elevator, executive and cyberspace. Though reactor main theme was ok, could have been more darker. But soundtrack was overal good, other sounds were very poor in game - mutants, mutated animals , robots they didn`t gave me thirlls like the original Sshk
