A few things. Most people forget how things were in middle school. The lack of deep empathy at that age makes it rife with bullying of all sorts, emotional and physical. The second thing is the captions make it easy for non-Japanese to misunderstand. Shoya thought the 'friend' hand gesture for a request for holding hands. At that age, it is terrifying to be linked someone romantically because the 'mob' will pounce on it ... especially if one of them is unpopular. Another key point is Shoko's constant apologies. Ueno is right when she accuses Shoko of not properly engaging with people and using apologies as a way to hide her heart. That is why when Shoko finally apologises with her heart at the hospital the music is so upbeat. And finally, Ueno's main problem is intense jealousy of Shoko with Shoya. She has always loved him and did not have the maturity at that age of properly process that intensity of emotion so she lashed out. I'm not saying she was right to be violent. Just explaining.
also, about the cross sign on people's faces, I think it represents the parameter of his social anxiety. Ishida was always so afraid to look at or even hear the voice from people who had the cross sign. once he knew he could trust that person, the cross would fall down. I relate to him so much because I also had social anxiety, I couldn't look at people's faces and every time they talked to me, I would stutter. i really enjoyed your reaction! you have this sense of what's right and what's wrong. most reactors wouldn't call out Kawai (the blonde girl with glasses) since she didn't really verbally abuse nishimiya just like Ueno (the black haired girl). but yeah, not defending/doing anything makes you just as bad as the bully. and you also pointed out about the teacher too! most people forgot the teacher's existence in this movie, but he kinda played a big role here. the teacher was the only adult who actually witnessed nishimiya getting bullied on a daily basis and he was so nonchalant about it. if the teacher were more strict; punished ishida and the other bullies, recommend an interpreter for nishimiya, etc, this all wouldn't happen.
This manga has 50+ chapters....So the movie adaptation cut down a lot of backstories and the original epilogue to reduce runtime.....That's why some of the events and character traits especially regarding Ueno, Sahara, Nishimiya's mom and others looked kind of vague and unexplained
yeah. i get the manga as soon i watched the movie and so many stuff was explained. like why nishimiya's father is not there ( he abandonned her mom when he realise nishimiya was deaf). or the teacher who told Shoya he understand him for being mean at shoko, we learn in the manga that Ueno was in love with Shoya which help understand more her animosity agains Shoko. it's even clearer that's Shoya 2 former guy friend who pull him out of the water after he fell down. The manga go even further by seeing all of them making an amateur movie. And at the ending it's imply that they will go out together. the manga is a great + for this story but the movie is the best... just for the music who are so beautiful. i saw that movie more than 20 time and still manage to makes me cry each time. this is the best movie i ever saw in my life!
ONE MORE THING- I think kawai the blond girl with glasses was the worst one with zero development. I mean she portrait herself as a loving & friendly person. She never accepted the fact that she was no better than Uneo. At least Uneo agreed that she truly hates Shoko, but Kawai indirectly made fun of Shoko. For ex. during the singing class if you look closely Kawai started lipsing early so Nishimiya would notice it and started singing.
Omg I did not notice that part at all! She really had the least development. She was not at all ready to accept her fault, always blaming others while she herself enjoyed the bullying. Not cool at all
