Steve Ovett and Peter Elliott competing over 1000m at Crystal Palace in 1983. Commentators - David Coleman, Ron Pickering and Brendan Foster. BBC Coverage.
Strange how the passage of time clouds the memory. I'd actually forgotten what an astonishing sprint finish Steve Ovett had. I mean Peter Elliott was a very very good athlete, but Steve Ovett left him for dead over the last 100 metres. What a great runner Steve Ovett was.
Britain's strength in middle-distance running was incredible between the late 70s and most of the 80s. Coe, Ovett and Cram were world beaters and multiple world record holders, while Peter Elliott was merely world class!
Great upload , thank you , but it's a shame that Coe ran at the same meeting and he and Ovett wouldn't race each other ? That's what people wanted to see !
Field size is a function of speed due to the risk of tripping in a pack. Longer races have a larger field. This is field was about the same size as an 800.
class from ovett but you can see the hot weather effects on him that did for him in la.he first started the over-heating in moscow after the 1500 semi when btw he looked unbeatable.look at him after this race,hot/muggy weather finished him in moscow(1500m final),world champs 1983,la 800 and 1500,europeans 5000 in 86(?).hot weather and ovett didnt agree with each other.Realistically ovett would have been pipped for the silver by coe in the la 800 (cruz was too strong for either on the day but remember he didnt really double up distances)and ovett would have won the 1500m in la
Joe McMullen ovett raced all over the world. Germany can be hot. Italy it hot. He set world records in Italy. I think he could have coped with anywhere in the world then or now

Peter got better as the year went by.
Ovett finish was incredible. He had the best last 200m ever
@@nickbamber268 Elliott was 4th in the 800m World Champs a few weeks later, so he was no mug even then.
@@nickbamber268 I agree but ovett was past his best here.
ovett was sheer quality

Always fun to watch Elliott
..always tries to win!
Miss meetings like this at Crystal palace,, they should have the European team competition,or IAAF world tour challenge.,

Early 1908s track. Magic times.
Ovett was the GOAT
considering this was 1983 and over 1000m maybe ovett was in the really good shape he claimed to be a year later in la84.elliot was no push over
Seems strange to see so few runners in a race compared with the overcrowded races today

Grammarly stops people thinking.
simple for Ovett. Just like that
Looked like a training run....shame he "ran like a goon" at the World Champs. Should have won it.
Dommage qu'on n'ait pas le chrono
Rob Harrison in third ?
Yes.
Has Elliot ever beaten Ovett?
In the late 80s definitely yes.
a few days later he ran 3.26
Lol no he absolutely did not
332 maybe

No doubt seeing his friends involved in a serious car accident on the way to the stadium had an impact on his performance.
@@tommytempo1 yes,a good comment as well

Interesting point you make about Ovett not being at his best in a hot stadium.
Certainly the hot smog of LA in 1984 caused him some serious distress.
@@mathematics5573 true, but he seemed to run best in colder climates or even evening races in hot climates, who knows
