    I collect coffee grounds from work and everyday I apply about a gallon to my lawn, and about another gallon goes to compost. From what I've read caffine supresses plant growth, and the nitrogen is not readily available and takes some time to be available from the actions of microorganisms releasing the nitrogen. This means you won't see instantaneous results but things should improve over a longer time span. I figured that the lawn should get the grounds in its dormancy, up until around March and then it should be left up untill the end of September. I had really heavy clay soil (I bought a house with a 50 year old lawn) which bakes in summer if it is not regularly watered and also makes it difficult for long root growth of the grass. So I looked at various options and decided that coffee grounds and wood ash were two free sources of materials that would help build up the soil structure, along with my own made bio char and soot from the chimney. The soil structure is building up nicely and through use of a tine aerator the grass is coming on well. Like I say, don't expect instant results but what you are doing by building up your soil and improving the micronutrients is miles better than the quick fix solution of keeping your grass fed like a crackhead on Isobutylidenediurea and Formaldehyde and the like, personally I don't want my kids playing in petrochemicals also all of that crap will leave no beneficial effect to your soil after three summers. I give my lawn a good feed of (free)(stinky) nettle tea, it has lots of additional nutrients including iron. Your pee is also a great free fertilizer, but I'll leave that decision to you!

    • @DIYDad1
      @DIYDad1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Train in Vain this is some excellent information! And you are absolutely right. I did a follow up video a few weeks later and you are right I did not see immediate beneficial results at least to foliar growth or color. But I’m in it for the long haul trying to build a thriving micro organism community in my soil. Between that and organic fertilizers a few times a year I think it’s really going to help out long term. I’ll be doing another soil test later this spring to compare things after one year. I have a very high pH here so I’m hoping this helps bring it back down to where the grass likes it more. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      7 days in since I posted this video and I have a few streaky areas that greened up a little bit. Will probably be even better once we get some more rain and it starts to break down in 2 or 3 weeks. But really, the benefit for me is getting it incorporated into the soil once I do an aeration. From what I've read a lot of people like coffee grounds for gardens and composting so I figured what's the worst that can happen lol.

      Oh you did see this other video I just responded to your other comment haha! I think there’s a definite benefit to having additional time Ryan of matter in your lawn but it’s not a “one and done” type of thing. I would maybe try and apply it regularly maybe a couple of times a year just to really build up that organic matter in your soil. And definitely apply it heavily to get a good benefit. Hard to say if there was any immediate reaction to applying it. I don’t think there was anything noticeable on the surface right away but over time I think the long term benefits are there. I’m going to wait and do another soil test next spring and see where I’m at. Hopefully there’s an improvement. Thanks for watching! Good luck in the lawn!

      Ogre Dad thanks for watching and commenting! I would say that I don’t think the short term results showed much of a difference between a regular low nitrogen organic fertilizer and the coffee. I think the long term benefits are what is really important as coffee is known to lower the pH of the soil as well as help with microbial activity in the soil making in healthier over time. I definitely would love to put more down this year if I could get my hands on a ton of it. One thing I noticed in the area that I didn’t put any coffee down is that my grass seed took longer to germinate in that area with no coffee. So maybe that’s a good data point. I did an update video that you can see here check it out! th-cam.com/video/xBgzi2xs92M/w-d-xo.html

      I'm about 9 days in since I put this down and the grass might look a little greener in a few strips, I'm not sure it's done anything at this stage yet. Just hoping the organic material added will start to break down and will help with microbial activity for when I go to overseed in about 10 weeks. But that's a great idea with the tarp! I dumped these buckets into my wheelbarrow and let it sit in my garage for a few days so the surface was dry at least, but being used coffee grounds it was kinda chunky and hard to work with lol. Unfortunately with all the rain we've had it was hard to find a day to let it all sit out and dry up, Saturday would have been perfect actually.

      Nim Rod hard to say without any definitive soil test data, which I’ll be doing a test in the spring to compare to earlier this year before the coffee went down. I think the long-term benefits will be increased microbial action in the soil. I saw negligible changes in actual grass color compared to the control area in the short term. Supposedly coffee has up to 10% nitrogen per pound. Maybe my lawn was just so deficient in N to begin with lol. One thing I did notice that’s been positive, I’ve seen a lot more earth worms in the soil! So that’s a great thing, they really help with aeration and overall health of the soil!

      CAV Textiles that’s a good question. I’m not entire sure to be honest! If it makes any difference I didn’t really see any slugs in my lawn before so my guess is maybe there’s some sort of other organic matter that they are attracted to? You could try applying a granular grub control to your lawn and see if that helps. Usually those grub control products have a pretty broad range of controlled pests depending on the active ingredient used.

      Programming Chicago I didn’t notice any immediate change in appearance to the grass, but I think the benefits are more to the soil and long term than anything else. I’d love to repeat this a few more time and keep building up that organic matter in my soil. I know my soil is lacking organic matter and micro nutrients so this might help that in the long term. I did a follow up video to this and you couldn’t really tell much of a difference when using regular organic fertilizer. So it’s probably easier to just use organic fertilizers for a similar benefit but this was free and I wanted to try it lol. Hope that answers your question! I know people who use this in their garden a lot and for composting.

They even have special stickers that say, Free for Your Garden, so this is a common thing. I'm going to take three bags every day or so. I love my house, but hate my lawn, dug down in a few spots that would never grow grass, and it was all just gray clay - god damn. Put good dirt down, from Home Depot, but didn't work well, too much grass seed had too much grass, the new shoots, too many, too close together, too damp, then got fungus and died. Am enthralled with the comments in this section, about other folks having clay issues, and using this. Might life would be complete with a normal lawn. I wish I didn't even have a lawn, but I live in America.
