The Village Where People Talk in Bird Language

  • Story about a village in Turkey where all the residents speak a "bird language"? In the village of Kuskoy, villagers have whistled this language for almost half a millenia, but there's been a worry that this language could soon be lost as the numbers of those who know how to speak it dwindle - the older generations passing, and the younger generations using mobile phones to communicate over distances. The reason they've used this language was a simple way to communicate over long distances. There could even be a bit of a COVID angle in that social distance has always been a way of life for these farmers.

The language itself is really cool. I love how it was uses and was happy it didn't sound like a cockutoo. I was getting sad when they we saying cellphones covid and nature might destroy it, but gave me hope that the app developed by Orhan may save it after all. This is something I wish the indigenous tribes in North & South America could do or a group of anthropologists could help this be done for cultures that have never seen or used technology such as a cellphone. It doesn't have to stop there either. Imagine all the biggest public libraries world wide having digital libraries of all at risk or endangered cultures of the world? Not just their languages but photos and what they did to survive where they lived, their beliefs, what family meant how they raised children what entertainment was like. Their diet etc. It's a huge project I'm aware of that but prople are always trying yo get thrir nsmes on journal articles, magazines and text books- this is a good way to do it.

In Mexico it's (or was) used too, but I'm not sure if it's a full language. I've heard it from shepherds, and in some neighborhoods and small towns.

I wonder if the whistle-language in TLOU2 was inspired by this system. Very good way of securing communication.
