    Eric valentine can get all greedy and go the mix with the masters route, instead he chose to share his huge knowledge for free on TH-cam for all of us to absorb. What a generous guy, there is pure gold on every video!

    Eric! I miss your videos so much I started going back through the old ones. I've been working on my drum sounds so these two on the Greg Holden album are really helping. This episode with GW has SO many great concepts and ideas rolled into one. Thx again so much for sharing. You've really made a huge difference in my ability to get closer to what I'm hearing in my head. Stay well and carry on!

    Spend 20 minutes discussing the inside kick mic only to discover it's a D112, then run out of time. Awesome channel, thanks so much for doing this.

    Unbelievably great content! Way looking forward to the second installment. This series from Eric is absolute gold, and at some point the word is going to get out. There are a lot of relative hacks out there (shooting videos from their bedrooms) getting fairly large numbers of views, while this genuine genius is, for the moment, going largely unnoticed. Thanks, Eric, for putting the effort into generating this awesome content!

Thank you, Eric and Greg And, for the record, I bought the FabFilter Saturn and Gate plugin before, because of other videos, where I saw Eric using it. This cemented my decision to use them on drums! I like how they listen to decapitator on the outside kick when it's 100% dry

    • @FrankTheAranda
      @FrankTheAranda 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not 100% dry. Open up Decapitator yourself and you'll see that the mix knob (whether 100% dry or wet) goes further down than the white dots on the GUI. 100% would have the white line on the mix knob pointed directly at the "y" in dry. *edit* AKA he's got it at like 5% probably, which is why Greg makes the point of how subtle it is.

      Thats what I thought! The mix knob does go a bit past either side on decap so maybe it was doing like a 2% blend or something and they both just have spectacular ears??? Lets be real though, It wouldn't be the first time two of the best producer/engineers in the world thought they made a subtle move when they actually just turned the volume up a bit. Hi Eric, i'm born itb i try to stay within the most because i love the fastness of the workflow but some time ago i've tried some old analog gear, and you are absolutely right, comps and eqs doesn't behave as they should with digital tracks. So, do you think a cheaper r2r (say a revox or something similar) can do the job? Since i've build myself some tubes comps and pres the mixing process became so natural and pleasing than ever, and what i guess now is if i need to invest in a r2r and be cool for the rest of my life!
    Best regards from Italy
    Ps: do some qotsa

    Mr Wells has a great way of describing things or should I say ‘Turn of phrase’.
    At 32:45 Mr Wells looks as if to say “Mmm! Maybe it’s not sooo great.” 😃

    Hi Eric, I really love your channel and music. Would you ever talk about getting good recordings out of un-ideal recording spaces such as basements, etc? Especially on drums. Also, how do you decide how to edit songs into their final form? Just a gut decision? Or do you want the song totally in it's final form before even pre-production?

  • @morei45
    @morei45 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Question for Eric, when, in the mixing process do you add the the altecs on the mix buss?. Are they on from the start or do add them in later in the mix process?. Love these vids man thx so much for doing this!.

    • @mrwev
      @mrwev  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I typically start without the altecs on the music buss. Once I am done doing all the EQing, compression on the individual instruments and have some basic levels then I'll start auditioning overall compression on the music. With most music I work on, my goal is always to get things to sound right with as little compression as possible. The mix will sound bigger the less compression you have to use.

    What is exactly the Fabfilter Pro-MB trick with the toms at 48:41?

    • @TomFaron
      @TomFaron 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He uses the MB as an expander to boost the low end ONLY on the transient of the tom hit, so that they sound massive on impact but they won't have that low end boost in their decay (which would translate to rumble and clash with the bass guitar in the mix). You could do the same technique with regular EQ but you'd have to automate the plugin on and off every time the tom hits so that's why he uses the multiband instead.
