  • Vistaraku, a company based in India, makes biodegradable plates and bowls from the leaves of the Palash tree. The leaves have natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties, which make eating from them a sustainable and healthy option. Madhavi and Venu Vippulancha started Vistaraku out of their love for nature. Each of the plates and bowls are made by women from Siddipet, Hyderabad, and Thimmareddypally.

I remember my father mockingly speaking of my maternal grandfather as being cheap because he arranged their wedding food to be served on leaf plates. (The woman's family organizes the wedding in India.) And he (my father) would brag how he had to save face during the reception by making sure food was served on "proper" ceramic plates with cutlery. At that time I would laugh at that joke because to my childlike mind serving food on leaves was a "low class" thing to do. But now I am an adult who can think for myself and this video just reminded me how narrow-minded some people can be.
Leaf plates and banana leaves have been used for centuries to serve food in India during traditional functions like weddings and religious ceremonies. And in this age, where use-and-throw habits are literally destroying the planet, I can see how this shift can be enormously beneficial. It will allow human beings to slowly transition to a more eco-friendly lifestyle without making it too difficult to adapt to. 😊

It requires a semi air and water proof packaging if it needs to be shipped.
It can attract insects or start degrading if it's in constant contact with the elements.
We just have to look at like a minute amount of shrink wrap is replacing a LOT of plastic.
