  • In this video, I am explaining Micro Four Thirds focal lengths, from ultra wide, to ultra telephoto, what are the properties of each focal length (depth of field, bokeh, perspective, compression), examples of lenses of each focal length, and how you can apply the best focal length (and choose the right lens!) for your photography or video, be it for travel, landscape, portrait, street, wildlife, etc.
I also touch briefly upon the subject of equivalency since Micro Four Thirds is known as a crop-sensor, how equivalency affects the properties of the focal length, and much more!
Focal length is one of the most confusing topic to learn when I first start photography. I simply don't know which focal length is best for what, and why I can't get my pictures to look like what I want. I hope that this video will help you to understand focal length better!

Thank you, this was a very informative video. I'm relatively new to photography and videography and have just bought a G85 last year. I'm learning a lot from your videos!

Another great video Gary! In my M4/3 experience, I think my favorite focal lengths range from 12mm to about 17 or 20mm. However, I am very pleased with my 45-175 power zoom lens. I often use it in place of a macro lens---I get just beyond its minimum focus distance and zoom in to the subject, and the results are outstanding. BTW, you included some nice photos along with this video!

Daniel, thank you for the kind comment! That's very interesting, never tried the 45-175 but seemed like a solid option! Cheers 😊

Thank you so much four your explainations . That's very clear. I like so much the Lumix 25mm f1.7 because it is sharp and I can make photos in low Light conditions. I have also a Lumix 14-140 f3.5-5.6. With this lens I prefer the wide angles focals between 14 and 17 because I use to make landscape photography. I like to use it for the street views. But for the telephoto I don't like so much because the small aperture 5.6. But I think it is a compact zoom very convenient for travelling and it has a big focals range for different kinds of situations.

Hi Gary! Thanks 👍 for this good video, very pedagogical. Nice combination of talking and explaining mixed with pictures showing examples, makes things more practical.
The majority of my shots are probably between 12-45 (just a sense). I, like you, have the 100-300 and it doesn't not get used so often but is indispensable when needed. I also have the 7artisans 7.5 fisheye which very occasionally is needed.
One lense I use seldom is my 25mm prime (f1.7), it is supposed to be a nifty fifty...and thus your most used lens but I seldom need that focal length, strange.

Thanks Gary, the two lenses I carry all the time Pany 25mm f1.4 & pany 42.5 f1.7. But alas i have way to many lens for my G9.

Joe, thank you for the kind comment! And thanks for sharing your preferred focal length range as well! I get what you mean with the 25mm, I also struggle with it, I found it's a bit too long and too wide at the same time sometimes, but it's still a useful focal length nevertheless 😊

The combination between 25mm and 42.5mm seemed like a very solid and flexible setup! Cheers 😊

Awesome on the point explanation! I am just contemplating between penny 9mm f1.7 vs Oly 12-40 f2.8 pro for real estate photos and all around.. any sugestjon?

Thank you for the kind words! I would suggest ultra wide angle zoom such as Pana Leica 8-18mm f2.8-4 or Olympus 7-14mm f2.8, Panasonic 7-14mm f4, Olympus 8-25mm f4 or even the older Olympus 9-18mm f4-5.6. Pana Leica 9mm or any other ultra wide prime is a good option but it's not as flexible as zoom, which might be an important factor in real estate photography.

Nice video. What do you think of using canon lens on metabones?

    • @Gary_W
      @Gary_W  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello Stewart, thank you for the comment! I never tried them before but the impression that I got from watching other people videos is that the AF can get slower, and you'll lose the weight saving benefit. However, if you already have Canon lenses on the first place, using Metabones might be a more economical solution so you don't have to jump to native M43 lenses when you start to switch to M43. Hope this helps 😊

Brother Today i brought a micro four third manual lens 7artisan 55mm for my Lumix GX85. Which focal length i select for this lens at the first time when i start my camera ?

    • @Gary_W

      You should input around 55mm.
