    I live in Australia and we have massive bushfires here all the time. I had a friend who used to own a large stable (not anymore it was burnt down and they are still rebuilding). Before the fire was even visible, the horses started freaking out and pacing in their stalls and pastures. My friends mother (the owner) raced down to the stables (towards the fire) and spray painted her phone number on every horse, then set it free. 3 days later, she received a phone call from a police station 30 kilometres away from her stable, telling her they had found a herd of horses with bright red phone numbers emblazoned on their sides. Unfortunately, she had to sell most of the horses, only keeping 2 and housing them in another stable, because they lost so much in the fires.
    Just goes to show that if all else fails, let your horses go! They are intelligent animals with better senses than us, and have a far better chance of staying safe if they all know each other and have been out in pasture together.

    you know whats weird? i had someone criticise the fact that i was riding my horse in a *snaffle bit* . the next day i tried out riding my horse in a halter and leadrope, and the SAME woman scoffed at me and asked why i was riding in a halter. i don't have a problem with bits, but it just shows that no matter what, no one is ever 100% happy.

      Most reining horse/western show horses in general (not saying rodeo horses to clarify) are trained by strictly voice and leg commands and I’m not surprised he was fine bridless because they are used to very loose rein to begin with. Good job to the trainer for training that horse properly👏🏻

    As a horse person from California, evacuating isn’t as easy as it may seem. Lots of people cannot get to their animals fast enough to evacuate them. I totally agree that if there’s nothing else someone can do they should just let their horses go. A lot of people do this, but because California is so densely populated, the horses end up getting hit by cars or trapped by circumstance. Trust me when I say most people do in fact have evacuation plans. But because of climate change and population problems California is a very dangerous place to have large animals. I’m not trying to be pretentious but this is a common misconception people have. Also when you move, make sure the barn you board Link has a plan to evacuate all the horses on property regardless if their owners are there/know or not.

    • @aina3387
      @aina3387 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've thought about that because I live an hour from my horse. We don't have wildfires here, but it is pretty unlikely I could get to get in an event of an evacuation. Luckily she lives on a huge number of acres and could probably take care of herself, but it isn't as easy as some people think.

      @Faiza Kousar I think he's talking about Raleigh. To be fair, Raleigh has a point about bosals, but mainly if they're ill-fitting. Properly fitted bosals shouldn't create any rubbing unless the reins are moved, and even then it should just be a bumping motion. Arguably, the same could be said about rope halters due to the place the reins connect, as they, too, can cause rubbing when too loose or when the rider is heavy handed. I think its mainly a commentary on people who have never ridden in a bosal or dont know that there is a different way to ride in one; aka you never use constant contact in a bosal, its mainly about neck reining and leg pressure, whereas in most bitless bridles, you can use constant contact for an english horse.

  • @dustyequine4168
    @dustyequine4168 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Bosals are designed to be used very lightly, with no force. They are a very mild bitless bridle, but obviously if you ride rough and forcefully a rawhide bosal will hurt a horse, like any bit/bitless device.

  • @honeybiscuit1457
    @honeybiscuit1457 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    As an addition:
    You also don't feed live animals because they can potentially injure whatever you're trying to feed. For snakes, sometimes you have to feed live for a little while but only for as long as it takes until you get them to accept frozen and thawed prey.

  • @calliemonaco374
    @calliemonaco374 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    I would like to come to the defense of bosals here. I have used one in the past and they are a great tool. mine never rubbed because it was fitted properly. when the bosal is not shaped correctly it will rub no matter how soft you are with it. it should fit snug across the nose and if the fit is correct it shouldn't move at all on the nose. now if the horse is a tricky fit, there is a very similar alternative. it is a loping hackamore. these are the exact same shape and apply the same pressure but are made from halter cord. bosals are made harsh by people who haven't educated themselves on the bridles. I gave up using it because the rawhide was too much for me to keep looking good. With the rope just dump it in water and its clean.

  • @poniesatemypencils
    @poniesatemypencils 5 ปีที่แล้ว +338

    About the bitless topic, any noseband can be tough on a horse's nose, especially if the rider has harsh hands. Interesting how you didn't mention those long shanked mechanical hackamores though, as they are a severe bridle too. Longer the shank, the more pressure added on the horse's sensitive nose. Bits are honestly not that bad, and most horses like to have a nice contact on the bit. I trained and ride my own horse 100% bitless, but I also don't hate bits. I've done my on research on both bits and bitless, and honestly it all comes down to the hands of the rider which makes the gear abusive or not. Sadly I've seen many young riders at pony club who yank their horses, and I've been called an idiot for riding my own horse bitless through town. The anti-bit and anti-bitless people I absolutely despise. Just listen to your horse and use whatever gear that they are comfortable and happy in. Don't go off by your feelings, you're not a horse. Every horse is an individual and they have they own likes and dislikes, don't decide for them.

      @charlimcc3445 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Yea some horses are just plain better with bits! Of course extremely heavy and harsh bits are bad but in some extreme cases it's either that or the horse gets put down! And bitless is good if it's for the right horse😊

      @@charlimcc3445 Sometimes horses do need a different type of bit that may be harsh to some, but if used correctly then that is fine. I do believe it all comes down to the horse's training well over what gear people use with them. :)

    Let me just throw in my two cents.
    My OTTB mare is a bundle of anxiety. She would flip her shit (because of an abusive past) if I abused her with a bit. I’ve been riding her in a Mullen Happy Mouth bit and she’s been doing fantastic. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve tried bitless. I’ve tried bosals, hackamores, bitless bridles, etc. but she can’t handle the pressure on her nose. She can’t work with that because it’s to much of a distraction to her. So, bottom line, not everyone that rides in a bit is abusive. And Raleigh, it’s not the bit, it’s the rider.

      That's what I would have figured; a bit is just a normal tool, and any normal tool (such as crops and even your own feet) can be turned abusive if put in the wrong hands, just as it is with people. I like Raleigh's videos, so many props to her for bringing light to the abuse of horses which is very rarely spoken of due to their size and most people just not interacting with them, but I've noticed a pattern of her jumping to calling /too/ many things abusive without much room for argument.

  • @shaunweaver1310
    @shaunweaver1310 5 ปีที่แล้ว +90

    And I bet there are people out there who think anything touching a horses face is abusive. This whole bitless/bitted thing needs to relax, everyone is allowed to have their opinion and shouldn’t be deemed abusive because of it. Ride your horse however you ride them and as long as you are kind, soft and loving, your horse will be fine whether they are bitted or not!

    I really wish people would consider that some horses actally prefer being ridden in a bit because my personal horse does! He cannot cope with pressure on his nose (he cant wear a nose band) he has no medical reason for this i've had vets check him, he just hates it. But he goes beautifully in his snaffle while he's being ridden and in his pellum while he's being driven with no issues at all. I work on a yard that is mainly bitless but they just go on whatever the horse seems to prefer if they go nicely in a bit and dont seem to like the bitless then they stay bitted and if they go better bitless they go bitless so im not biased towards bits and im not against bitless.

      That is perfectly fine. Us as people should listen to our horses about what they like and dislike and not put our strong opinions/feelings before the horse's best interest. We're not horses, so we don't really have a say in claiming something is abusive. I've seen many horses comfortable and happy in a bit, with contact, even if we accidentally yank on the reins, horses forgive. I know some horses that don't like bitless bridles either, and much happier in a snaffle. My horse on the otherhand, I trained him bitless, and I even got him mouthed to the bit, and he honestly hates it. They are all different like us. :)

    The mare Ms Dreamy is very famous. She was such a phenomenal show horse, always showed so honest and tried her heart out. I remember when this happened. Dan Huss did such a great job trusting her through the pattern. This right here is why I train Reiners. To get a horse to this point where they are so soft, trusting and athletic but completely in tune. Nothing feels better than throwing the reins out completely loose and just letting that horse do it’s job or removing the bridle and becoming a complete partner with your athlete. I know you are against breeding, training and other things but I thank you for appreciating this sport and such a great horse and rider duo. The modern day reining horses are just so phenomenal in the mind now. It’s like working with a fully trained herding dog like an Aussie. They love their jobs and love people, almost more than they love fellow horses.

      galexyadopts I really liked her at first until I noticed that every video she does she just has to bash anything that isn’t what she does and it’s extremely annoying. I haven’t seen many videos maybe 2 or 3 out of the many I’ve watched where she says those things CAN be abusive not that they are. Every other damn time it’s “I don’t use it and you shouldn’t because it’s abuse. A bit in a horses mouth is abuse so use something that doesn’t require a bit but only use these certain ones cause every other one is abuse because I know everything” it’s just gross. She sounds like every other preachy equestrian that only does things one way and if you don’t do things that way too then you’re wrong and abusing your horse. It’s literally the reason I stay away from anyone that rides one discipline and is always preaching about the way they do things. She’s still very knowledgeable about horses don’t get me wrong and I know she can ride, but I don’t like peachy equestrians, but that’s just me. I usually just skip anything she can’t shut up about lol it’s just I’ve ridden in literally every kind of bridle possible on many different horses and never had any kind of pain or horse refuse to listen to what they’re being ridden in. The only thing I have had a horse hate is a hackamore. But that’s just me and I don’t scream that constantly at anyone who does because if they’re horse responds to it and isn’t in pain then that’s wicked n good for them.

    About going bitless or bridleless, I'm an equine student at a community college and we have a lot of trained reining horses and I guarantee that any of them could run that pattern correctly without a bit or bridle and the reasoning is because they all know how to neck rein which is what you want for any western competition but especially reining. It's really cool that he carried on showing after his bridle broke but it's no surprise that the horse was still responsive. I would expect that from a horse in an AQHA show.

    Wtf is wrong with bosals? First off, she’s pronouncing it wrong. Also, if the bosal was rubbing the horse to the point it bled, it was obviously a fitting problem and had nothing to do with the fact that it was a bosal. Good bosals are super smooth. They’re made of leather. Expect to pay $150+ for a decent bosal. It’s no different then riding in a rope halter. It’s actually got less pressure spots than a rope halter. I ride my mare in both a bosal and in bits. She works the same way in a snaffle bit and a shank bit. Lately I’ve been riding her strictly in a bosal for training myself and her. I’ve rode her for hours in a bosal and never experienced any rubbing. It’s the best thing to start a horse in because the pressure is so clear for them to understand and is the foundation tool. Learn your shit and don’t judge something because you’ve never used it and you’re basing your opinion on one situation you experienced.

      Daniel Khthonios Ok have you ever actually held a bosal? The noseband is not rope. It’s rawhide. It’s hard, but slightly bendable and flexible, so you can go through a process of shaping the bosal to fit your horses nose with a technique that I’m not going to get into. The only rope on a bosal is the mecate, which is the actual rope used as reins. And as you said, it can be rough if not fitted properly or if you ride rough. But that’s the thing with every piece of tack. A bosal is no different then those other hackamores she showed.

      Actually, false. Reiners are EXTREMELY unlikely to be “spur trained” and even so that does not mean you don’t need a bridle. Notice how his spurs are bouncing up and down in the video, not squeezing, and also notice how he throws his legs FORWARD and OFF the horse to stop, not pressing into the horse. Spur trained horses are not any better at riding without a bit or bridle than any other type of horse, and spur trained horses are normally in the pleasure and hunt seat realm. There’s a difference between riding with spurs, and spur “trained” in which you squeeze to stop and so forth.

His owner said that he was afraid to care for him because he would panic and become aggressive. I was calm with him and he remained calm, which I realize doesn't always work. I offered him a frozen thawed, that would be his first frozen thawed and he happily accepted. Sometimes he didn't eat when I offered him food, but 9/10 he was very happy to eat and enjoyed his meals:) He was one of the most incredible souls I've ever met. Andrea Hermosillo well maybe you should try to bond a little better with your horse then. It tells a lot about the relationship if you don’t have any other control than the physical one. Another reason could be, that your horse actually is in pain, and only is able to tell you without the bit/harness because the mouth isn’t shut and the expected position of the horse can’t be forced anymore, because the horse is “free”, so it has the option to act out when pain is there. People should really try listening to their animals instead of making excuses for why they have “bad behavior” animals don’t lie, they wouldn’t act out if there wasn’t a good reason for it, all they want is to live in harmony.

    • @feathersong5838

      @@luna00musen How about you shut your mouth sense you have no clue what you're talking about. Hackamores can be, and have been, just as harmful and dangerous, if not more dangerous, than bits. Yes, certain bits are really harsh and shouldn't be used, Same with hackamores! Mechanical hackamores use physical pain to make the horse do what you want, while an average regular bit gently communicates with the corners of the horse's mouth. ANY tool can be used or abused. I have seen the severe damage that improper use of hackamores or bitless bridles have caused on horses due to inappropriate riding. Same with bits. It can go either way. If your horse can ride bitless and does just fine with it, that's great, congrats, but not all horses tolerate that kind of pressure on their face. It all depends on the horse, and the horse's training.

    • @luna00musen
      @luna00musen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spirit Song Well frist of all, i’m not promoting hackamores at all. I actually Can not stand Them because Way to Many people do a lot of harm to their horses with it because of the “I can’t hurt my horse with it, there is no bit”. The only thing I am saying is, that it seems very suspicious to me, that this horse of hers acts out, whenever he has the ability to. I am not even referring to pain in the mouth area. It could be back pain or whatever other pain. But a fact is, that this horse “can’t be ridden without a bit because it is not listening”
      To me” wich is bullshit. The horse can not be ridden without a bit, because there most likely is some kind of pain involved, so the horse expresses itself in a “negative way”. The at negative expression/problem doesn’t go away from blocking the horse from moving and expressing tho. It only hides the symptoms.

    For everyone in or near the wildfires (gosh I hope your not IN them)
    These are things you can do to help your self and your horses.
    1. Pack your car with things you would need to survive. Take extra coats and put them in ahead of time. Even if you are far from the fire, it spreads fastly. Don’t think it’s not coming.
    2. If you have pets, like cats or small dogs, have their carrier ready at all times, just to be safe.
    3. Take what you can early. This was my great grandma’s method while she was escaping Estonia. She had all of her things packed up and had left by the time the soldiers arrived.
    4. Leave. Leave the state, AWAY from the fire (cough)
    5. If you have horses and didn’t have a chance to evacuate them, spray paint your phone number on them as soon as you get a warning or even before. The sooner the better. Do it in red on dark horses and black on light horses so it is clearly visible.
    6. If you have enough time, write your phone number on the horses hooves.
    ~Thanks, that’s all,
    Stay safe loves 💕😘

    I want to correct the bosal argument quickly. I do a lot of western stuff and understand the mechanisms. A normal hackamore has metal or shanks. The pinwheel hack is going to press metal into the horses face when you try to turn. The bitless bridle is good but when you pull, you are going to apply pressure to the other side of the face but usually there is no metal to have pressed into the horses face. I bosal is going to apply pressure evenly because it asks for it below the horses chin. Its difficult to give mixed signals. I have a mare named Dixie and she is a HUGE work in progress. She can't take a fleece or a mechanical hack because she panics when she feels metal. She can take a bit fine but she needs the traditional hack (Bosal)

    i am a rider, and I think that using the posture and the pressure of the legs on the horse side and the pressure on the neck to tell the animal what to do it's enough for the horse to understand what you want him to do. Therefore I think unharmful bridal are perfectly ok. I hope it's clear, my English it's not too good XD

    I love CBD MD. I use it for myself and my cats. I can verify the no traceable THC claim as my neurologist’s office drug tests pain management patients once a year to prove they are taking the controlled meds as prescribed and no other controlled meds are in their system (including pot). I have been taking CBD oil for years and passed the drug test every year.

    REINING HORSES ARE SPUR TRAINED. You can ride just about any seasoned reining horse without a bridle. They respond to weight and pressure cues and very very light contact of the bit. Whhhhhy are bits still an argument? Need one? Use one. Don’t need one, use something else. Whooooo cares.

    I think it depends on the bosal, I don’t use it anymore because I just use a rope halter now but the one I had was soft leather and had a lot of give, it’s not hard or anything. But I agree that If you use a hard one then it can be harmful. Also try and write a phone number or something on your horse with shoe polish or something so it can be returned if you let it our

    I rlly want to ride my horse bitless, but the last time I tried with a halter I could BARELY control him, any tips? And he’s got an extremely sensitive mouth and spooks at nothing at least twice in every ride, so I want control, But not to pull on his mouth like a crazy person

    so true if it comes down to letting your horse go, it has the best chance to survive (someone might even found your horse) don't be selfish you dont need to risk your life and your horses life just because "i want a horse to ride" please please be safe out there though

    I started riding bidless with a bosal but I also have a trainer who shows me how to use it correct. But I see your point.

    This just proves that the bit has absolutely nothing to do with this horses performance. Just because there is a bit in a horses mouth doesn’t mean that it’s being used to yank the horses face around and force them into uncomfortable positions. He wasn’t forced into this. If the bit had been yanking on the horses face and used incorrectly during competition the horse wouldn’t have performed as well as he did without it this time. Its obvious that the bit did not cause any previous harm to the horse.

    Yeah I've always thought bosals looked very harsh, unpadded leather bridles can cause hair loss or rubbing let alone a very hard rawhide chunky noseband, it's also similar to a leverage bit in the way it is used it could cause a lot of damage very easily. I'm personally fond of sidepull bridles as if you get a good padded one it's less likely to cause discomfort. Some people prefer the straps under the jaw or a hackamore- they're not for me.

    My dog has three legs, he’s fully capable of taking care of himself. Probably from the lesson he learned by getting hit by a car. Or the role model he looked up to as a pup. He’s a German shepherd. When we got him out of the vet the first day after his surgery he seemed to have struggle standing and walking. It’s now a few years after that and he runs faster than any four leg dog. Turns out that breed of dog has a lot of weight in their shoulders. And it was the back left leg that was amputated. I live on acreage outside of my town on a road just a few miles from the highway and the farthest I’ve seen my dog run is probably 12 feet out of the yard. He gets in trouble if he leaves the yard now. I just wanted to share because he’s my only outside animal and I don’t have a horse.

    Just letting them go is the best way to help horses if you can’t get them out. I know with the Napa and Thomas fires last year in California, owners just wrote their phone number and a their horses special health needs on hooves and let them go
