As someone who lived in a constant state of happy until I hit a bout of depression and anxiety in my early 30s that left me a mess, that line meant so much to me that iI had it tattooed on me so that I would be reminded it's a moment, just like every other emotion, not a state of being. Maybe a modification of its original meaning, but that's how I read it.
I had listened to some Menzingers before and thought "solid punk band, but I am almost 30 and my open mindedness to music is waning. Heard they were playing On the Impossible Past (full album) so I figured I'd give em one more shot. First 3 tracks are great punk rock songs but once again, I've heard it before. Then Gates came on...Gates is the type of song where it doesn't matter what music you like. You can immediately tell this level of song writing comes rarely. Completely contextualized the album and the band for me, now I'm a massive fan of the whole album...Gates is a very special song. It is on another level of so many punk bands. Honestly I think if some mainstream artist did an acoustic cover of it it'd be a mega hit.
I am the pain that beats through your temples Every morning when you wake up I am the boy with alcohol poisoning From all the parties Chris was throwing That summer they took us in Like every other American For getting drunk around back of the Lion's Club Waiting for the shitty bands to finish up And some kids played hacky sack while the others just got high It's not hard to fall for a waitress When you both smoke Smoke the same cigarettes You'll get seated as diners or lovers You'll get the check as friends for the better You'll carve your names into the Paupack Cliffs Just read them when you get old enough to know that happiness is just a moment So I'm marching up to your gates today To throw my lonely soul away 'Cause I don't need it You can take it back And they will make examples out of us Like when they caught you in the CVS parking lot But I fed the liars Everything I got in my cabinet brain of canned thoughts Everything I've got It was everything I've got In my cabinet brain So I'm marching up to your gates today To throw my lonely soul away 'Cause I don't need it You can take it back Yeah I don't need it You can take it back
I dated a girl down in Savannah for a bit, she was absolutely batshit crazy, but she did get me into these guys. I have no idea how they're not more successful. There aren't many active punk bands out there who can match these guys' creativity and versatility. Maybe Dan across TWY + Aaron West, that's all I got.
Saw them last month along with ADTR and rise against. They're amazing, I just wish I knew who they were earlier so I could have appreciated them more while seeing them
There are very few bands that have me saying "Wow, this is a phenomenal band" before the song ends. The Menzingers have made me say that on more than one occasion since I found out about them.
Pretty sad that songs like this don't get played on the radio for people to discover. I feel people have somewhat lost the meaning of music. This song still gives me feels of when I first heard it. Great for a fire and some beers!
Very possible I played in one of those shitty bands at the lions club. I definitely remember playing hacky sack it was a one of my cover bands first shows lol . I haven’t heard this song in a long time lol oh the memories
@TheXpozaaaH holy shit really, epitah plus universal praise ont he new album, plus the new album being very radio friendly, yah these guys are gonna blow up in the next couple years
How the fuck is a band getting popular a bad thing??! Let them. So long as they don't start making music just to sell records but rather because of what they have to say, it really doesn't matter.
@trollzfort3hlolz i went to see Rise Against at Chicago. i saw The Menzingers, liked them, now I'm looking into them. ADTR was there too, i still don't like them. Rise Against was amazing though, that's why they're my favorite band.
@McFaddenCovers I was thinking about going, but I've seen The Menzingers and Rise Against four times each. I hate ADTR so I'm passing on this. I'll just wait until Fest 11 to see them again.
Sometimes it feels sorta crazy to me that they’re from the same shit ass place as me. And they made this and sooo many other amazing songs/albums. I think north east Pennsylvania is so crappy that it forcefully breeds talent.
Wish the new album had a bit more rough vocals. Chamberlain waits is the best album by them IMO. The screams on that album were amazing. Raw, and rough
the fact that a lot of people are mentioning them, makes them a hipster band. This isn't 1995 with Nofx,Face to face, The bosstones, Fifteen, Jawbreaker. The scene is no longer an under ground thing. If you want underground go check out ASSuck, An&LC$unt, the locust. At least then you will be listening to some good grindcore bands. At least check out Left over crack =)
John Maz I have liked hundreds of bands dating back to 1989, aka rites of spring(first emo band, Ian mkay, Minor threat,Fugazi). Way before everyone knew who they were. The problem is bands like Cap'n Jazz, Face to face, Choking victim, and The pietasters. Never get the true following, they deserve.
i have a bunch of stickers that i got from warped tour and most of the bands are screamo and i thought this and was going to be a screamo band but it's not, its actually decent music :D
@McFaddenCovers Same dude, ADTR's fan base is the worst. and their music sucks. The Menzingers are so amazing and so chill and Rise Against just always puts on a great show.
I just dont think i like this new album, i like change, but chamberlain waits was to perfect, none the less ill still buy this cd because i enjoy this band too much
"when you get old enough to know that happiness is just a moment" ....what a beautiful line...
Agreed, it has a heavy meaning to me
I had listened to some Menzingers before and thought "solid punk band, but I am almost 30 and my open mindedness to music is waning. Heard they were playing On the Impossible Past (full album) so I figured I'd give em one more shot. First 3 tracks are great punk rock songs but once again, I've heard it before. Go listen Jenn Fiorentino. She did the best acoustic cover of Gates.
Definitely the best album they've released, and one of the best ever made. Fucking love The Menzingers ❤
A friend introduced me to this band about a month ago, and I cannot make it a day without this song.
A few years apart but it'll be the same for me , finding this band over and over again every year for a new song at time
Found it a few years ago loved to take edibles and sit on my old roof listening to this song with my ex
This song deserves more views and likes
This song is perfection!
I am the pain that beats through your temples
Every morning when you wake up
I am the boy with alcohol poisoning
From all the parties Chris was throwing
That summer they took us in
Like every other American
For getting drunk around back of the Lion's Club
Waiting for the shitty bands to finish up
And some kids played hacky sack
while the others just got high
It's not hard to fall for a waitress
When you both smoke
Smoke the same cigarettes
You'll get seated as diners or lovers
You'll get the check as friends for the better
You'll carve your names into the Paupack Cliffs
Just read them when you get old enough to know
that happiness is just a moment
So I'm marching up to your gates today
To throw my lonely soul away
'Cause I don't need it
You can take it back
And they will make examples out of us
Like when they caught you in the CVS parking lot
But I fed the liars
Everything I got in my cabinet brain
of canned thoughts
Everything I've got
It was everything I've got
In my cabinet brain
So I'm marching up to your gates today
To throw my lonely soul away
'Cause I don't need it
You can take it back
Yeah I don't need it
You can take it back
Thank you
I'm sure everyone is aware, but that waitress paragraph is about as good as punk rock lyrics can get.
Thanks
Who’s listening in 2021? 🙌🏻
I remember hearing "Gates" at Fest 10 for the first time. I knew right away that it was going to become one of my favorite songs.
god that chorus is so emotionally charged, love it.
All I have to say... Thank you for this music. Sincerly... thank you.
Saw them live in Scranton in December. Been listening to them for years and I can tell you right now one of the best concerts I have ever been to.
Never heard of these guys before. 30 seconds in, "aw yeah. this is what I need."
This album is a masterpiece!
This really touched my soul 😭
so good this song......
A little old school, a little amateur, yet very professional. Just love it! Thank you!
If you're hearing this in 2022, you are a legend and I love you.
Saw them last month along with ADTR and rise against. They're amazing, I just wish I knew who they were earlier so I could have appreciated them more while seeing them
My dad would listen to this a lot,it's no wonder why
Perfect song.
Beautiful songwriting
the most underrated bands are the best
There are very few bands that have me saying "Wow, this is a phenomenal band" before the song ends. The Menzingers have made me say that on more than one occasion since I found out about them.
Valeu mano
Wohl eines der besten lieder die je ein mensch komponiert hat!
This is a good sign if their new record is going to be like this.
hometown represent! support the zingers!
@McFaddenCovers I saw them on tuesday, along with a day to remember and rise against. I was really impressed by these guys.
Boško, imaš nevidjenu sreću što si naišao na The Menzingers. Uživaj u najboljoj muzici.
I remember listening to this for the first time and just replaying it over and over

Pretty sad that songs like this don't get played on the radio for people to discover. I feel people have somewhat lost the meaning of music. This song still gives me feels of when I first heard it. Great for a fire and some beers!
I still love this song in 2017 !!!!!!
The poetry that these guys put into their songs enlightens me so much. Gives me hope for a better musical future.
Epic song.
Fucking beautiful chorus!!

Co-Main Event Podcast!!
2019 any1??!
Just enjoy the song, you don't need to relate to anyone man
How the fuck is a band getting popular a bad thing??! Let them. So long as they don't start making music just to sell records but rather because of what they have to say, it really doesn't matter.
Got an older sound to it. Good shit.
Bit of Greetings from Asbury Park era Springsteen?
Man with ptsd all is calm now
Been listening to this track for years and somehow I keep coming back to it. Classic!
The record cover is a good proof for the fact that pregnancies are a dangerous business :D.
THANKS CHRIS CRESSWELL
wholelifetrip ???
No way is it the same Chris?! haha
i saw his cover of gates.......and that´S how i discoverd the menzingers. ;)
So fucking stoked
@trollzfort3hlolz i went to see Rise Against at Chicago. i saw The Menzingers, liked them, now I'm looking into them. ADTR was there too, i still don't like them. Rise Against was amazing though, that's why they're my favorite band.

Motherfucking masterpiece.
Just when I thought they couldn't beat Chamberlain Waits...
Think these are really great, very refreshing. Just wish they wrote some more upbeat songs, they all seem pretty melancholy
i fucking love the menzingers, his voice is not the greatest, but the lyrics are so beautiful and i can almost always relate.
Who's here in 2087?
Sometimes it feels sorta crazy to me that they’re from the same shit ass place as me. And they made this and sooo many other amazing songs/albums. I think north east Pennsylvania is so crappy that it forcefully breeds talent.
Wish the new album had a bit more rough vocals. Chamberlain waits is the best album by them IMO. The screams on that album were amazing. Raw, and rough
Et seulement 47 404 vues ...
sounds a lot like a Gin Blossoms song... In a good way.
Rack
I dare you to find a better "underground" band that hasnt been ruined by hipster
morgan says the truth!
too late, i like this band now and i'm a hipster >:-)
yea but you liked them before anybody knew who they were =P Cyriaque1000
the fact that a lot of people are mentioning them, makes them a hipster band. This isn't 1995 with Nofx,Face to face, The bosstones, Fifteen, Jawbreaker. The scene is no longer an under ground thing. My cabinet brain of canned thoughts.
@McFaddenCovers agreed man!! i really didnt enjoy listenin to adtr but the Menzingers were a FUCKLOAD better then them so it was worth seeing them
too bad the new album isnt as good as i expected it to be :(
i have a bunch of stickers that i got from warped tour and most of the bands are screamo and i thought this and was going to be a screamo band but it's not, its actually decent music :D
If a troll lives by himself in the woods does anyone know he exists?
You know, this song's a bit too poppy for me, but the Nature Sounds really give it that ambiance it was missing sounding the way it did!
@McFaddenCovers Same dude, ADTR's fan base is the worst. and their music sucks. The Menzingers are so amazing and so chill and Rise Against just always puts on a great show.
I guess I understand why people enjoy this, just can't get into it
sadly, the first guy is right
I just dont think i like this new album, i like change, but chamberlain waits was to perfect, none the less ill still buy this cd because i enjoy this band too much
@boskoantonijevic Dude, who cares. If you actually hear the songs, it's just punk that's been stripped down into rock songs.
The chorus sounds JUST LIKE The Promised Land by Bruce Springsteen
it's not hard to fall for a race horse when you both smoke smoke the same pole
punk'd
This band is too talented to get popular. The majority of People have shit taste.
