The Downfall of Bungie | How Activision destroyed their Destiny

  • Thanks to WortWortWarthog, TheReachWay and & LittleMoa for the help and resources provided for this video :)
    Well, this is a bit depressing. Bungie used to be my idols, now they're up there with the gaming's biggest villains.
    Watching my favorite developer turn from heroes to villains has been sad, and recent events pushed my thoughts over the edge so much that I had to finally make a video on them...

    • @HiddenXperia
      @HiddenXperia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +337

      Thanks man! Yeah it's really ironic, everyone always rags on Microsoft for being so bad but they really aren't. EA and Activision completely eclipse anything they've done. Come to think of it, Microsoft as a publisher have never done anything shady as far as I can remember, aside from microtransactions but that's sadly an industry norm now.

    • @117Smiley
      @117Smiley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      HiddenXperia surely if Microsoft was such a respecting publisher Bungie wouldn’t have felt the need to leave. I’m not entirely sure why the felt they needed to leave Microsoft, whether it was to become a cross-platform dev, or feel like they had their own freedom (ironic, because they ended up in the hands of Activision)
      I can’t help but feel Bungie were caught between a rock and a hard place. It would make sense that if Bungie stayed with Microsoft then they’d only be making Halo games, and it seems Bungie were getting tired of the franchise.
      If that’s the case it’s a tragedy. Truth is, some of the best publishers to work for are the console ones, because they care far more for quality over financial gain.

    • @assult878
      @assult878 6 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      Le Magnifique Link I think it's due to the restriction of not being able to hit both platforms at the same time as Microsoft is a direct competitor to Sony. Ironically , Activision didn't let them hit the Xbox market in return with Destiney 1. They also fucked up by signing a 10 year contract which gives Activision all the time they need/want to take em out back and do the same thing EA does and kills the company.

    What's funny about this video, is that it was revealed after Destiny 2 launch, was that all these fuck ups, everything about destiny 1, the stuff held back and resold as DLC, throwing away the story and rebooting it, was actually all Bungies managers / higher ups, not Activision
    Even more ironic, is Activision is actually responsible for the few things that Destiny did do right like Taken King, and actually went against rebooting the story, and was getting frustrated with Bungie for their constant failures nor did they actually push microtransactions, Bungie did. Also Bungie didn't "leave Activision to do better things and leave their control" but Activision basically kicked them out. LMAO

    From 2006-2010 Halo and Bungie was my life. I was a pretty active member on Bungie.net, Legendary if I remember, and it consumed me. Bungie were my heroes - I was destined to work for them. I couldn't see any other future for myself.
    Now...now it's different. The old Bungie is dead. The idiotic Bungie.net change, their loss of visionary minds, and their slavish devotion to greed is what sewed their fate.

Bungie gets bought by Microsoft (becomes and joins Jedi), does good things and stays somewhat hopeful until the cracks show with the announcement in ‘07 to leave (building of anger and dark side showing), joins with Activision (joining Palpatine and becoming Sith), and finally leaving Activision (killing Palpatine ROTJ). I wasn’t around for the halo days and got into d2 when I didn’t know anything about activision, bungie, the original d1 story, none of that and after learning about it almost a year ago it’s kinda crazy. The story for the last year of content has been the best it’s been since Forsaken (besides beyond light and season of the hunt) in my opinion. Though they still retain some of the business practices of activision like eververse (but there’s no changing that at this rate), and the monetization of transmog but from what was described in the video it’s gotten better. Really good video, and I hope bungie goes back in the direction of the halo days.

      I reckon the publishers are most to blame. Activision and EA are cut from the same cloth when you consider how devs under their control invariably either get shuttered (RIP Visceral) or get put on CoD/Battlefield/Need for Speed duty. I fully expect Anthem to follow the example Destiny set though.

    • @5Andysalive
      @5Andysalive 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Mass Effect Andromeda was actually a good game (overshadowed completely by lousy facial animations that should never have passed quality control). And MEA hadn't most of the shit in it, Activision is so fond of.
      So wether you like it or not, it's no valid comparisation with the multilevel fuckup of Destiny/2.

    • @gh0st_proxy
      @gh0st_proxy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We'll have to disagree there. The plot and gameplay were less impressive than previous entries imho. The Nomad was fun to drive, though. That said, MEA's problems, while not the same as Destiny's, still affected it and, "multilevel fuckup" or not, the sales figures were enough for EA to put the franchise on ice.

    I remember seeing my brother play the first Destiny at launch and how truly amazing it was (though he had to wait a week before servers weren't full enough so he could play). It was so huge and amazing and felt so free. I was really hoping I'd get the same experience when I played Destiny 2, but the worlds were just so... small and empty. It felt so restricted and repetitive and had so few people when I started playing it. It's really sad to have such an experience.
    I missed the Golden Age of gaming by such a short amount of time... almost everyone I know got to experience it, but not me. It's great to hear about everyone else's experiences and I'm happy for all of you who got to, but I wish I could've been a part of it. Now I just get to play the remnants of the good online games that used to exist and the same exact game/style of game repeated over and over again. I wish it could change, but it won't. It feels like I've lost something I never even had to begin with.

      Another thing that bothers me about Destiny is the campaign. The story missions and world building in Halo were so well done yet in destiny its been boiled down to "run past everything and one shot the boss with power weapons/super" and it really sucks the fun out of the game, you end up zoning out, skipping cutscenes and generally not caring about any of it, not to mention there not being an option for higher difficulty. I remember playing Halo split screen co-op on legendary with my bro and spending hours repeatedly failing missions and having this huge sense of accomplishment when we finally beat a level and that feeling is missing from Destiny.

    People can talk shit about Microsoft as much as they want, but at least they allowed Bungie to do almost anything they wanted, with as far as I could tell, little-to-no oversight. Activision on the other hand, has been well known, long before Bungie signed that contract, to be much more controlling and forced developers into extreme work conditions. I will never understand why Bungie utterly screwed themselves over, just to give Microsoft the middle finger.
    Also, one could blame Activision for everything, but Bungie willingly signed a deal with the metaphorical, possibly literal, devil.

    • @georgebaggy
      @georgebaggy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Yeah the only thing Microsoft did was force Bungie to develop paid DLC, but at least it wasn't actually ON THE DISC already. There was also so much content in the game at launch that you didn't feel like you needed to buy the DLC to experience the full game. You have to respect Microsoft's intelligence. They knew that offering a good deal would help their game succeed. Activision just doesn't get that. Their business model is not competitive, I don't understand why they keep using it.

    • @gabrielgustavson22
      @gabrielgustavson22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Just a question. Have you actually read the contract? Or are you just basing this on how Activision treats other developers? If you haven’t read the contract, then I’m afraid to break it to you but Activision has very very very little involvement in the development of Destiny games and DLC. In fact, Activision only requires Bungie to make and sell them on schedule, be it what they are, and to implement micro transactions, the extent of which is determined by Bungie. Bungie holds all creative freedom of Destiny. Bungie decides what they put behind micro transactions. Bungie decided to block off players who hadn’t bought the DLC from the end game they already payed for. Bungie scrapped the original story. Bungie held all the hard work from trying to make Destiny 1 better over the course of three years and dumped it all when they made Destiny 2. Destiny 2 was also restarted in mid development just like Destiny 1 and it was also Bungie’s decision. You see the pattern here. Bungie, Bungie, Bungie, Bungie, etc. Bungie is to blame. All good things eventually come to an end, and this time it was Bungie’s turn. Not by fault of Activision. No, by fault of Bungie’s upper management who got too greedy for their own good.

      The only thing that Microsoft did that Bungie didn't like was make an RTS Halo game after Microsoft shut down a Halo RTS mod. And it wasn't that bad at all-Halo Wars was a decent seller, and Halo Wars 2 is practically saving the franchise. Granted, both games aren't Halo 3 big, but it's quite funny that the one thing Microsoft forced on Halo that Bungie didn't like is the one thing that is saving Halo and keeping it a notch above Destiny. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. How Biblically ironic.

      Sting Rey you're actually wrong. It's the other way around. Microsoft had Bungie on a tight leash while Activision is far less controlling. The funny thing is Bungie turned to shit once they left Microsoft, if you weren't 13 and remembered when the letter Bungie left on their site stating why they wanted to leave Microsoft in the first place. They ironically needed a tight leash, but now it doesn't even matter because most of the Halo team is gone anyway.

      It's more likely Bungie's fault. They tried to blame Microsoft for the way Bungie behaved then they went directly to work for pure evil aka Activision, they know what they were getting into and Bungie showed their true colors, become more evil than we realised.

    • @joblologo9541

      It's possible, but Bungie showed they were supportive of the community, and their philosophy was highly unlikely to be from Microsoft's influence since they are one of the big corporate entities that want to make as much money as possible (not seemingly as bad as Activison, but still), and the fact that Microsoft wanted them to only make Halo and nothing but Halo (which any artist will tell you is draining and will inevitably become stale without stepping away from it for a while). Then after moving to Activision, suddenly all this bullshit tarnishes their name and key people at MS who while not at the top, but still high up and highly contributive like Joe Staten, Marty O'Donnell (and seemingly Jaime Griesemer as well) all fired or quit.
      It's certainly POSSIBLE that it's solely on Bungie, but look at the track record of the publisher they signed up with, and the fact that they were not happy with being forced to make the one thing with MS. It's also possible they just wanted to get away from MS. Eitherway, even though it could be solely Bungie to blame, given the facts and evidence, it makes shit load more sense for the blame t be on Activision.
      Remember, the publishers are the ones who impose business decisions. The devs are just artists who want to get paid for their work. You only work in the industry if you enjoy it.
      I wouldn't be surprised if most people at Bungie are not proud of their current reputation. I doubt most if not all the devs do not want to be employing these shitty business practices. It's common practice for the publisher to do this, because people who don't understand the industry most blame the devs, even when it's the publisher and they know this, so they know that since most people are ignorant to that fact, they can get away with it, so they keep doing it.
      Doesn't help that people keep throwing their money at games like this.

    I think it's because of greed and pride, Bungie was making a lot of money off the early Halo games , they thought Microsoft was "limiting" their minds... so they went to a company that was also doing well (Activision) .... I don't think they really thought of their decisions ... with all the DLCs coming out for such a game, might as well just buy different games

    • @patton5283
      @patton5283 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      While I think they had the right idea from splitting from Microsoft, as scene with some of the questionable interventions they did during their game studios dev moments, they really fucked up with joining Activision who are arguably worse. It would have been better if they remained independent since they could have most likely made it work due to past popularity and respect. Though that is no longer an option even if they could split off from Activision.

    • @moreOddThanNess
      @moreOddThanNess 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      A good publisher will insert themself at certain parts but also let the developer lose on the leash. MS seemed to have found an ok balance for Bungie and Halo before Bungie grow hungry.

    • @secondsein7749
      @secondsein7749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bungie's main reason for the split is that they want to do something else other than Halo, which as evident with Halo 4 and so on, Microsoft would have them do if they didn't split. I understand why Bungie made the split as it is the same reason why actors hated being typecasted (which at worst, could spell the end of the career for the actor if the typecast becomes irrelevant with time). But they could have done better with who to lay with.

    what sad state AAA gaming is in. dominated by massive companies that get franchises like battlefront and a halo successor and manage to completely ruin them with "their vision" on what gamers want. just a bunch of out of touch money hungry business majors that have 0 clue about what makes a successful game.

    • @SIPEROTH
      @SIPEROTH 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To you a successful game is something most people love playing and praising etc.
      To them that game is not successful if it didn't make the money they wanted from it.
      So Destiny is very successful for them because it made good money. That is how Activision and now Bungie see things.
      So if you want to blame someone then how about starting from gamers themselves that are willing to pay for shitty practices.

      It suckes that more and more AAA games are favoring micro transactions including gta and red dead. I don't understand what these franchises are thinking they are ruining there name and creating their own versions of infinite warfare, because at one point the bubble will explode and people aren't going to buy their game. They could take a page out of Ubisofts book and realize that you can have a game with micro transactions and not shove it down somebody's through. Siege really shows this because yes there are micro transactions and yes they look appealing for people who have just started but you can play the game and not use them, a friend got the game around when velvet shell came out and he already has most of the operators he is only missing 2 or 3. There is a reason 2 years after launching Siege still has the fastest growing player base and one of the highest daily players count.

      When games cost hundreds of millions of dollars and years to make with a team of hundreds and no guarantee of return, you can bet your ass publishers will take a more direct role. It's not really surprising considering the massive undertaking required to make a modern AAA game.

    Hey HiddenXperia,
    I just want to say thank you for making this video :)
    I too used to follow Bungie in their Halo days, but to me those days are long gone. I stuck out to Halo 4, but after that, I have not bought Destiny 1 or 2 as I watched the same signs you saw start happening. I still recall when Halo 5 Guardians took out split screen co-op and I looked to my best friend and said, "Then it's not halo."
    It was bittersweet watching this video, but I thank you for taking your time and effort into going into the rise and fall of this beloved developer. I enjoyed it, for what the intent was meant to be.
    I feel, and fear, that if we are ever going to have another experience like Bungie did, it will have to come from elsewhere.
    Cheers mate!~

    It’s funny that you mention idolizing them and wanting to work for them. I grew up playing my dads old Nintendo and the 64. At 10, I got a Xbox 360 with Halo 3 and that was my first major step into modern gaming. I had a friend before that who owned the OG Xbox, and had Halo 1 and 2, and the flood was by far scary as hell. But my point is, is that no matter what, Halo continues to be my favorite game and is the reason so I took an interest in game development and particularly Animation and story telling. I’m currently in school for animation and part of me still dreams of working for Bungie on Destiny or for 343 to try and help fix Halo.
