Cui Yue, known professionally as Pin’er, models clothes for online retailers selling their goods on the Chinese e-commerce behemoth Taobao. Because Taobao models are valued for their ability to drive sales, with the website tracking each product, the approach to modelling favours volume and efficiency. Donning between 100 and 200 outfits a day (and more than 200,000 in her career, she estimates), Yue tries to capture the spirit of each outfit in a matter of seconds, shifting her poses in rapid-fire sequences before slipping into the next look. Mostly shot on the street, with the briefest of pauses for water and food, it’s hectic and decidedly unglamorous work, but for models such as Yue it can be lucrative - at least for a time. Part of a video series on work in modern China by the Shanghai-based US photographer and filmmaker Noah Sheldon, Taobao Model is an offbeat and engaging look at a little-seen side of e-commerce and the gig economy.

Her mindset is not an exception in the modeling industry. We all knew this. Most models in America go work behind the scenes and for instance my daughter just recently landed a fabulous job at an art gallery. Her resume stood out because she was an IMG model and modeled in New York and London. Even when modeling is done with you is continues to help you.
Most Chinese have a very realist mindset. They are very practical and see things as it is not what they wish it to be. It is surviving. I am Chinese.

Can she get atleast a dressing screen?, I know that she said that she didn't care but I'm sure deep down she wanted atleast a place to change where no one look at her or take her picture while she's changing.
At 100 clothes a day? using a screen would take 2 hours more a day. They need to be fast.

I'm a woman and I won't mind being watched wearing that on the street, if I could make the same amount of money as they do (1.4million USD a year). It's no more revealing than wearing a bikini.

She seems mature enough to know modeling is not forever. The speed shows she’s experienced. But I think it can be stressful and models regardless of the type of work they do should at least have a tent or something to dress in. Even if she makes a lot of money, it’s still stressful work knowing that if you can’t keep up, there’s always someone else who will replace you. Hope they ease up the expectations they have on taobao models
fireball39279 I don't think the original comment implies she is doing something wrong though. I think it is sad because she might make a lot of money now, but the job does not offer security. In the future, she could be easily replaced with younger prettier girls. The job is temporary with no insurance, no retirement plan, no benefits, etc.
Actually it'll be the least tiring and most optimal way for the photographer to get the right shots quick without a several hours shoot

I don’t care if she’s not as famous as models that we see on social media but can I just say that I highly admire her talents and work ethics of a model. She’s great! She poses and changes into different clothes everyday. She has the confindence to work anything she is put into. Very humble. My favorite line of hers was that she would notice the type of clothing style she is in to and make dedicated poses for that like cute, casual, business. We don’t see this mindset very often with our current famous models. Sure this industry can be very difficult and time consuming but everyone has different levels of success. I’m for sure a fan of hers and I hope she does well in life. fighting!❤️

Yeezus Season I'm not a fan of the Jenner-Kardashian, but comparing these two is not apple to apple. Posing for a photoshoot and walking in runway are two different things that needs different skills. Also, posing for fast fashion and high fashion are also two different things.

Gigi Hadid Kendall does photoshoot indeed, but it's for high fashion where they have particular theme and concept, not just doing random pose. The Taobao model done stellar work, of course, but doing fast posing isn't compatible with high fashion photoshoot.

Remember, she is a top model, not just a model, she is THE one. And rich guys love models, especially *the talented and hardworking, no excuses* . On top of that, there is a shortage of women in China, this makes her even much more valuable.
In short, she only needs to work hard for the next 5 years, then the prince will come and take her to the Palace.

@Rose Suppose she can do this for just 3 years, then she probably can earn at least a few million dollars. Say, 3 million dollars, but that is more than 20 years of the salary for most people even working at a Tech firm in silicon valley. Then no matter what she chooses to do, she doesn't need to worry about financial issues. She can even just deposit the money in a bank and has an annual income of at least 60K for doing nothing. There are so many choices for people having a good of money in hand.

That's the problem, people want everything, good payment, "safe" jobs, vacations, to be loved by their boss, recognitions, bonuses and stuff. I work independently in Selling, and people cries like babies, so they get back to jobs they don't like to talk about how their bosses abuse them, but on the other hand, don't make more effort than that.
I definitely admire her poses. She doesn't repeat the same pose. I was just shocked that she changed her outfits on the spot. Her professionalism is over the top. I hooe she get the recognition she deserves.

I think modeling in China is a little bit different with modeling in the US. As what the video have shown, she changes different poses very quickly because she models 100 or more pieces of clothing in a day. Also, with a perfect skin and body shape like that? She must have been pretty confident to not hide anything from her body in public and she has assistants too, atleast she doesn't get completely naked when she change another outfit. And I think she seems pretty comfortable to it.

It's from necessisity that she got used to it, but imo, a screen on wheels doesn't have to be so bad. However, changing in public with the type of undergarments she's wearing isn't so bad.
How did I get the emotion of sadness and peace as I was listening to her speak? Sadness from her being aware that she won’t be able to keep her job forever, but peace because she’s aware of the fact and she’s ready for them to let her go. She sounds so wise and she’s beautiful, I love her already 😭 I hope she finds a stable job once she doesn’t do modeling anymore...

The taobao models need to change hundreds of cloths in a day so they have no time for a tent/cover.
No worries they are not forced to do so, its an excessively highly paid job, and they have many ways to make money, more than just taking photos, such as openning a stream in factories to sell cloths, on-site interaction with viewers. (they earn quite much from this)
They are not hired by Alibaba or Taobao, but by those online shop owners.
No need to feel sorry or pity for anyone, they make millions of dollars a year.

So true, I did a few runway shows when I was young, mixed genders, no seperate changing areas or privacy whatsoever, just get into the next set of clothes as fast as possible. And nobody even cares because they're all professionals. Men and women alike, bodies are just tools, glorified clothing hangers. When you work as a model you need to accept that.

Ive been in outdoor photoshoot, we only have 2ppl for wardobe, one brought the new clothes, one took the old ones, while both can manage to hold a black garment around the model. Simple gesture to show that we respect each other

Wow. It suprised me how many poses she needs to come up with at the top of her head & at a high pace. I was considering going for modeling in the back of my head but this video open my eyes to how professional one needs to be or quick thinking to make it far. She has by far one of the greatest fashion modeling photos in the industry.
Life in China, particularly for women seems to be fast paced. You could see that the race for survival is a bit tough for them. Big population means big competition yet less job. Be it white or blue collar job.
