      I came here to suggest this. :) Also, Bec, you can prune off the bottom leaves of your tomatoes so they don't get wet when watered. That's what brings in the blight. You've got this!!

      Yes! I just came to suggest this too :) Also, a little tip with the basil: you can take some of the middle leaves to make it double its foliage (because it starts to grow in pairs) and in no time you'll have a huge and beautiful basil plant

      Try slippery caterpillar taps, available on Amazon. Also this: The most common treatment used against gypsy moth is a spray of Bacillus thuringiensis, commonly called Bt. This bacterial insecticide kills caterpillars that eat it within a week of its application. Bt is found naturally in soil and degrades within a week when exposed to sunlight.. also made place some canvas over the shower to help keep it clean. Nature is beautiful but has its’ ugly side too.

    We would get a different small caterpillar on this pine every year. We took a spray bottle with water and added some dish soap. When you sprayed them, they would just fall off the pine and not go back because of the soapy residue. This never hurt the pine and worked every time. If it works for you, you might get a car sprayer for the hose that holds some soap. That should get the ones up high. Best thing, you don’t even need a permit.

    Just a quick tip: when watering your plants, don’t pour it over the plant itself, pour it into the soil. Because when it’s that sunny and you water the leaves, the droplets will act like a magnifying glass and burns the leaves. So maybe water the plants in the early morning and when the sun goes down.

    One method of saving your trees is wrapping the trunk in burlap. This is what York Region is recommending ... maybe you can do this on the trees closest to the cabin:
    Wrap burlap around the tree’s trunk at chest height, secure with a string or rope in the centre and fold the top half over the bottom half to form a bit of a ring. The best time to check the burlap bands is in the afternoon, when the caterpillars seek refuge from the heat of the mid-day sun. Caterpillars can be removed and placed in a bucket of soapy water for a day or two before disposing of them. Always wear gloves when handling caterpillars and egg masses to avoid an allergic reaction
    Note: check your burlap bands daily to ensure birds or any other wildlife don’t get unintentionally caught.

We live in the city so a lot of the pruning they do is to keep the tree healthy. There are also injections that can help with some of the bugs we have here. I'm not sure if it will work with Gypsy Moths, but my grandfather used to soak 1 can of tobacco in a 5 gallon bucket of water for 2 days, then strain out the leaves. He used his garden mister and spray all the plants he didn't want caterpillars or aphids on once a week or so and the bugs left them alone. Any food plants would have to be washed before eating, but even home produce needs washing. Apparently the re-dried tobacco makes a good bug barrier around the edge of any mulched areas in a garden as well.

      Except there's an unknown bird disease killing songbirds and it's sweeping northwards 😭 Only a matter of days or a week or so before it's in Ontario I'm sure. Already in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Here in Indiana they just called for all bird feeders to be taken down. Working for the DNR, it's so sad to hear updates. Keep an eye on local news to know when not to put feeders up anymore! But also definitely a year to be vigilant cleaning them 2-3 times a week. I miss our birds already and bah yes they'd help with gypsy moths!!!

    Hey Bec- when watering plants, water around the base of the plant not on top of the plant. Plants absord water through the root system. You can cause some damage to the stems by watering on top of the "leaves" / flattening them. Helps them to grow better

  • @pitbullmomplans
    @pitbullmomplans 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Something we’ve been doing is watering our plants at night! When we used to water during the day, the water would get on the leaves and the sun would completely scorch them and all of our little plant babies and trees would be all brown and burnt 😞 I don’t know if that’s actually a thing but I find this year especially it’s been working so good!! No burnt plants at all! 🌱

    The most common treatment used against gypsy moth is a spray of Bacillus thuringiensis, commonly called Bt. This biological pesticide is highly specific, meaning different varieties of Bt affect only very specific species. Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) is the certain strain that must be used to control gypsy moth.

    Best time to water is as the sun is going down because then the water will evaporate as much and it gives the plant a better chance of soaking it up but if you are going to water during the day make sure you don’t get the leaves work because the water will get hot and then burn the leaves
