Funny I keep a basket next to my bed where I throw all my yarn scraps. When I go to bed I crochet a continuous Granny square in the dark or dim light until I fall asleep. Every morning I check over my work, weave in any ends and make my bed. I have made seven of them and family members always claim them before they are done. I'll post a pic on Facebook.
I’ve crocheted for years but I still like to watch myself make the stitches, it is very soothing. It still amazes me that I can make some interesting loops and knots with only a crochet hook, and some yarn.
My grandmother taught me to crochet 47 years ago. I always ♥ listening to you video. I have not seen any crochet like this since she was alive. Yes I can make the granny square without looking. It was very relaxing to do when I was recovering from Retina Detachment Surgery (had 5). Even though I had to keep head looking down I could close eyes and relax and crochet for hours.
It’s like playing an instrument. When I learned to play the piano, it took me a while to know where all the keys were so that I can read the music instead of watching my hands. Thank you for showing how you do this! I’m making the same scrap blanket you are and have been trying to do this as well. I’m using two strands though so it’s making a little bit more difficult to be able to crochet without looking but I will keep working on it. Layla is so cute! Makes me miss my kitties so much.
Hi Anja! I was watching one of your earlier videos a while ago and my husband commented that you were crocheting while not looking. I can’t do this. I goof up enough as it is...I shutter to think what my project would look like if I looked away!! Lol! Thanks for another great video!! Chris 🥰
I crochet without looking all the time. I'm usually watching a movie on TV.but once I get to a certain point I pick up and make sure that I haven't missed the stitch anywhere and then I continue.
Definitely possible. I didn't know I did this, knitting and crocheting while reading my Bible out loud, until a friend asked how I knit with my attention on my reading. The answer is established muscle memory and a simple pattern. The same goes for walking a chewing gum while talking to someone. And that blanket is so pretty!
If I am crocheting old familiar stitches or it is a project I have done many times over, I can do it with out looking. This really fascinates people when I am in public. lol But then we go on to have interesting conversations about yarn and crochet. Some family stories come out.
I started crocheting without looking on my third blanket, thanks to a dead easy pattern (Sober Granny blanket by Secret Yarnery) and the repetition that making a king-sized blanket gave me. I also hold the yarn in my hand in a weird way, which allows me to poke my hook against my finger: it is an enormous help in finding the right place to "hook in". I still give a glance and check that my first stitch of the cluster goes in the right place and that I don't jump too far over: I did that a few times and I can tell you, it is not fun to find out after a few long rows that you need to frog your work. It can be frustrating having wasted all that time, but there is also the question of what to do with the frogged yarn, especially if you haven't got the time to crochet it back straight away? Even if you do, there is a great danger that it gets tangled! Wrapping the frogged yarn around its cake is the best I have come up with, but takes away the convenience and especially when I have stuffed more than one cake into my magazine rack, tightly sitting side by side. (They are a cheaper option than dedicated project bags to keep yarn off the floor and moving around the house; I think yarn bowls are only good for one ball or skein at a time. The side pockets hold my yarn bands, scissors and the hook I am using with the project: I don't put it back in its case after I got confused and used the wrong hook halfway through my project, with a yarn that was nigh impossible to frog..! So, if you can get a hold of a cheap magazine holder that fits a couple of 100 - 200g cakes, (I get 4 in mine by stacking them up) I would recommend for you to try it. You can always put magazines into it instead.
I'm in my late 60's, and only learned to crochet 14 months ago. I learned via TH-cam, and Anja, your videos were some of the most helpful ones! I now can make (and do!) some very lovely things. I do it every day, all day :) I'm currently making several granny cluster striped pads to lay across the top back of my sectional sofa. These are to replace some cheap fleece throws that I keep there because my 3 cats sleep atop the sofa back all the time. And, well, you know...HAIR! I got inspired to make these from your Layla bed blanket. Anyway, I have discovered that I CAN do the granny cluster little blankets without looking! Of course I check myself often, but I'm so excited. Never thought I could. Thank You!
Very interesting! I can knit without looking, have been able to for years, but I'm newer to crochet and still working on it. As another commenter said, it's like playing th piano without looking at your fingers, or where your fingers are on the frets of a guitar
I've been crocheting for over 20 yrs now and I still can't do it without looking lol. I just have to look at what I'm doing but I wish I didn't. I could watch TV much easier that way!
Love the intro! Layla is your crochet couch cat hehe ♡ Sound advice, and as always your suggestions and instruction are clearly shared. Thank you Anja 🌼
Thank you! 😊I was really surprised to read that many people can actually do it. You are all so talented. Thank you for watching Fiona Nicholson ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
I have been crocheting and knitting without looking for about 35 years. The only time that I really concentrate on my stitches is when it is a complex pattern. Stay safe and healthy and keep on crafting
Hi pilaravila1241, I'm still here, not gone anywhere, please click the notification bell so you don't miss my new videos, thank you for catching up with me, Anja x
Thank you so much. It reminds me of when I started playing the guitar at 10 years old. I used to practice every day and in time I could play without looking at my fret and my strumming rythm for me took quite a bit longer. As you say it’s practice practice practice. I crochet every day for at least an hour. As you know I am making the Venice Cardigan and it is only now on my first sleeve that I feel totally comfortable with this stitch pattern. It is not difficult at all but as a new crocheter it has taken me time o get this stitch into my muscle memory! 😊
I think I'm still a long way from being able to crochet without looking!! I will keep practising and take your advice! In the meantime I still love crocheting xx
This is awesome. I'm kind of a newbie so I'm still working out the kinks, but I am looking forward to being able to make a go of crocheting without looking. You are amazing by the way.
Knitting and crocheting can be done in low light, such as candle light or next to a fireplace. A lady who has a channel called LifeAt50& Beyond DIY makes all kinds of holders for the kitchen, bathroom and under the sink. She takes a paper towel holder or two and some of the small container holders and zip ties to make her own shower caddy, spice racks, can organizer. Or whatever she needs. You can use the paper towel holder for your yarn especially if your using more than one skein. Use one holder for each color. You can make a yarn holder too for several skeins. Use the small baskets to hold small skeins, balls or scraps of yarn.
Another lovely video Anja and you make crocheting without looking seem so easy. I wonder if you could do a short video on how you hold your hook. It would be very helpful for me and others I guess. Thanks Anja.
Awwww love your kitty Anja. I have three beautiful kitty cats. ❤ Also a 90 pound German shepherd Sofia. And we rescued a beagle , Oliver, from a life of a test animal. He’s the absolute best and super spoiled.
I have a scrap blanket on the go and am going a little slower and not looking. Strange at first however getting the hang of it now. Thanks for the tips Anja 💕
I’ve been knitting seriously for only two years and can knit without looking. But for crochet, I’ve been crocheting for 30 years and can’t do it without looking (yet). The hook always gets snagged. Maybe it’s because knitting is essentially only two movements…knitting or purling. You’re always just throwing the yarn around the needle and pulling it through. The needles are smooth with no hook. With crochet there are so many different stitches. I love granny squares though… I have yet to make a blanket, so I am going to start working on that as practice. I love double crochet. Probably my favorite stitch.
My favourite stitch is the half double crochet, with learning to do it without looking, the trick is, to choose one stitch and do it repeatedly, so you get muscle memory, then glance away and try a stitch, or 2, and work up, Anja x
@@OpheliaTalks thank you, I definitely plan on doing that! I always go back to knitting since I can look up from it, but I can make so much more with crochet. You’ve inspired me!
That's amazing. It surprises me how many people actually can do it. Just goes to show how many talent is out there. Thank you for watching Frances DuRietz ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
I am doing a shawl with double crochets and chain spaces right now and while I can't quite enter my hook without looking yet, once my hook is in the right place I can finish the stitch without looking, so it's at least enough that I can watch reruns of familiar TV shows without having to just listen
Cool! I have the problem with my dexterity not being the best, or my hook gets hung up in the yarn during a stitch and I'm fighting with it. So my stitches aren't necessarily smooth and easy sailing. I'm hoping to get there. More practice, I know. 😊
I love all of your videos! I got 11 balls of stylecraft special dk yarn to make an Ode to Anna CAL blanket, but I already made one in a different color so I wanted to use it for something else. Do you have something in mind I could make with the yarn? I’m not sure what to make with it.
I have been trying to do this for a few years and I can a little but no where near how fast you are and looking away for that long... 12 year crocheter here and still have a long way to go... maybe I'm holding my yarn in a way that doesn't allow for this?
Hi Crystal you are doing wonderful. Crochet without looking is not important it is actually more a fun thing or something I do when I am doing a scrap blanket and watch some Netflix at the same time. You crochet for 12 years, I bet you are fabulous. Have fun, and thank you for watching. 😘
Unfortunately, the smoothness of a yarn can vary from skein to skein even if it’s the same brand. My skein of Red Heart Super saver in Persimmon is crocheting like butter and is actually soft whereas the white skein feels dry and stiff and drags on my hook. So if I’m not watching my all dc shawl, Mr. Frog leaps in 😂😂😂
This video was an answer to a question of my subscribers as they see me very often crochet without looking during my live streams. Turns out, from the comments that many of them can do it. It's just a bit of light entertainment. Thank you for watching Antoinette Bilocca ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
I am setting you a challenge to try not to look! Ha ha ha, just for fun really! Enjoy xxx
Do your projects take longer crocheting with your small hook rather than a bigger hook?
@@perfumetester10I think it depends if you are using a smaller yarn with each. If you use more chunky yarn then it might go quicker.
