- In this episode I interview producer, songwriter, and my friend, David Bendeth.
He has been around music and musicians most of his life as a guitarist, songwriter, producer and A&R executive. Self-taught on guitar before studying at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, he traveled back and forth between London and Toronto in his formative years before going on the road with the likes of drummers Billy Cobham and Lenny White. In 2007, he produced and mixed The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Breaking Benjamin’s Phobia and Paramore’s RIOT amongst others. All three records went Platinum that year. From 2010-2014 he produced and mixed Taking back Sunday, Papa Roach, Forever the Sickest Kids, A Day to Remember, Crystal Bowersox, Kaile Goh, Picture Me Broken, Our Last night, Coldrain, The Letter Black, Takida, Asking Alexandria, Bring Me The Horizon, Of Mice & Men, Sleepwave and Heartist.

35:00 Dave starts talking about the warning
I’m going to come back and watch the first 35 mins in a sec. 😅
Rick, please do the warning!
The Warning and David Bendeth will go down in rock history.
David's work on The Warning's Error album- Incredible !!
Monster of an album, very well done
excellent album. Not a bad song on it.
Love The Warning and their new cd!
Just mentioning THE WARNING in the thumbnail got you hundreds of clicks. Those 3 girls are a force!
Rick: These conversations are probably more important than the interviews with musicians. Guys like Dave are as important to the making of music as guys like Billy Corgan, but no one asks for their stories. This is such an important historical document. You have no idea how important this work is.
Echoing this sentiment, such great work!
I totally agree
And, I think, sometimes more interesting. I wonder why that is.
@@starsinmyeyes maybe because they have knowledge that can only be learned in practice and by experience over time. The behind the scenes magic/secrets.
There are podcast interviews with tons of the great producers/engineers. Check out Andrew Talks to Awesome People. You can also watch Pensado’s Place and you’ll find a bunch as well.
David did an outstanding production with The Warning
I was so glad David mentioned The Warning. It would be awesome if you'd do a segment on them. I've only seen you mention them once, and only their cover of Enter Sandman. They have quite a few really good originals! They're the future of rock 'n roll and deserve some coverage.
Agree 🤟these 3 sisters are 🔥. Love their last album produced by David
Agreed! Would love to see him react to more of their stuff, do a "What makes The Warning great" video, or even interview them.
I came to listen for mentions of The Warning and post a similar comment.
Rick, please listen to the new songs by The Warning. I know you’ll do a video or two. They’ve dropped 3 songs that will be on their upcoming album, “Keep Me Fed.” The songs are “Hell You Call a Dream,” “More” and “S!CK.” The Villarreal sisters are great people and their songs and live performances are the real deal.
😊@@Solemn_Kaizoku
More than just a few good originals! I love all of their songs! 🤘🤘⚡⚡⚡🎸🥁
David you made the best record of 2022 The Warning ERROR !
I'm absolutely loving all the love The Warning is getting from these comments.
I literally was just listening to them today
The Warning! 🤘🏻
The Warning is one of the most exciting things happening to Rock since a long time. Glad they're on your radar, too.
Absolutley true! ⚡ 🔥 🤘
'Money'
'Evolve'
Agree with you 🤟🔥
I would also say that some Japanese rock bands. Rumors are floating around that The Warning and Band Maid will be playing shows in Mexico and possible other dates on their world tour in 2023.
The Warning is my favorite band of all time
Can’t wait until they become mainstream
David is a great guy. I hope he produces *The Warning's* next album, too!
He's perfect for them
Wish he was..
I was a teenager when the Beatles were creating new songs.
The Warning's creations make me feel the same good way, that the Beatles did, for me back then.
It's as if The Warning summoned the spirits of *Rubber Soul* and *Revolver* when they were doing their early stuff. I left my jaw on the floor when I first heard them.
Rick - You have known David Bendeth for a while. You know his personality. Imagine him locked up for two months with the three Warning ladies from Mexico (20, 18, and 15 years old back then) in the middle of the pandemic, recording an album. They wrote their own songs, played everything themselves, and did all the singing. It was David's job to mold all of the raw talent into great album, which he did. If you want to have another great interview, get David back on with The Warning girls (they are sweethearts} and let them tell stories from the recording sessions. It would be very interesting and lots of fun.
I second that!
Oh, hell, yes! They are a hoot and a half. Great young adults now, with over ten years of road and studio experience. If they had been around in the 1960s, who knows what would have happened?
I LOVE YOU THE WARNING ❤️⚡
Love what he has done for The Warning.
Seriously. I'd love to see a reaction style video of Rick checking out The Warning because afaik he hasn't said anything about them. For those that have never heard of them, really talented female trio from Mexico. Became viral years ago because of their cover of Enter Sandman.
@@bse523 I swear I've seen a video of his where he played something from TW for a few seconds and made a comment that it sounded good, not pegging his needles like most of the rest of the tracks he was reviewing. I'll see if I can find it.
Error is the best album of last year. The Warning is incredible.
He mentions The Warning at 35:38
@@NoSmokingDogs Rick played the beginning of the ES cover. At the time it was their top track on Spotify.
The warning error is the best record of the decade.

Wish the Warning would release a live concert performance cd, that's when there at their best.
And a record.
Their Teatro Metropolitan CDMX show is AMAZING. 👍🏼
Instead of "What makes this song great", how about "What makes this album great" on the album Error by The Warning produced by David. Great interview! Interesting topics. I see how you guys could talk music all week.
David produced my favourite album of 2022, The Warning's "ERROR". Jazz guys forget that they are inextricably linked to Blues and Rock.
Still trying to find a hard copy of this to give as a gift. Looks like they are all sold out.
I had to lookup what inextricably means
@@FScottNessler yea I wanted a hard copy for christmas, to support the artist and also just because I Wanted it. I haven't wanted a current album in hard copy for 30 years..... that's what the warning has done to me
@@DonKelleyMusic I know, I wanted to slip this in the stocking of several of my friends who have not heard of them. Much better than sending them a link, "hey listen to this."
My favorite as well. Love it. Love them.
The Warning was so excited by Davids work on Error. He got the sound of their live work out of them and on to the album
The Warning are getting known. Hands down best band in the 22nd century.
A year later and still here for The Warning, almost single-handedly saving rock and roll for the next generation.
Imo David Bendeth really helped put The Warning over the top. This was awesome... a chance to listen to two longtime music nerds (a good thing!) talk about the music business. Love that they embrace new artists, new technology, etc but still love the 'old stuff' as well. Bravo!
Get ready, Rick. The entire Warning Army will be visiting shortly. (And greetings to you TWA who got here first.) Thank you so very much for your work on "Error." We've always said they can't put out a bad song, but you dialed them up to 11.
Please do a video on The Warning. I grew up on Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Tom Petty...prog rock and story based songs. 3 young women from Mexico have captured the feel of those old tracks and mixed it with newer influences to produce an amazing record.
I second that. When I first heard The Warning a few months ago I felt like I woke up from a music coma. Then I saw the documentary with David Bendeth gushing about them and to me that's the highest praise possible.
I third that motion.
David did a great job working with them. He pushed them hard and taught them a lot, and one of the things I like about them is that they are always looking to learn and get better.
I counldn't agree more, The warning brought my attention back to new music, mainly theirs. 😁
The Warning is the best young rock band IMO. It's crazy how quickly they've become one of my favorite bands.
I think David did a GREAT job working with "The Warning". They have tons of very cool songs! I think they really are one of the best rock bands to come along in a long time. Good songwriting, good singing, cool guitars, awesome bass guitar and drums. Everything. For the next album I hope they just keep doing what they've been doing. They nailed it. I like all 3 of their albums now. They're a really special band ✨✨💿✨✨🤩👉👩👩🦰👱♀🎸🚀🌟
I came across choke, then heard some of queen of the murder scene, error, 21st century blood randomly as they would come up, one day heard their version of enter sandman, kept on getting more into their songs, realized queen of the murder scene was a concept album, saw how they started as little girls, made it to Ellen's show, Berklee, has their prior covers as little girls, opened up for Def Leppard which has been my favorite band along with toto, saw their jam at the ted talk, as little girls...it just keeps coming. Hope Rick Beato gets to do interviews and analysis of their stuff, interact and give them some of his wisdom
Not only do they have "cool guitars" they know how to play the sh** out of them.
Definitely gotta give respect to the bass mix on the album. David did an amazing job
I "discovered" The Warning shortly before the pandemic. I listen to them daily. They absolutely ROCK!!! 👍🔥👍🔥👍🔥👍
The Warning IS the greatest thing to happen in rock music since I was in my 20s in the 1990s. The warning's first two independent albums were AMAZING, in fact their second album is one of the greatest albums of the 21st century imho, but ERROR is EXCEPTIONAL!!! It makes me jump and dance and cry and love and hate... every damn time I listen to it (daily, currently).
FWIW I'm a professional musician and I understand very well what the Villarreal sisters have put into what they do and how talented they are, and honestly the most important part, how amazing their songwriting is.
Somebody gets it!!!
Agree with you 345%
The Warning - I haven’t been this excited about a band since Led Zeppelin (Robert Plant was 19 at the time) and Deep Purple released their first albums.
I'd love to see Rick analyze some songs from *The Warning's* latest album, *ERROR...* David did a really great job producing and mixing!!!
Rick should sit with Alejandra Villarreal and ask her to play some Jaco for him.... like Donna Lee (she learned it when she was like 9 or 10 years old... )
@@DonKelleyMusic One listen to the live show at The Dakota Bar where they performed Black Holes and Show Me the Light will be enough to illustrate her ability to summon Jaco.
David is a great guy. I'm a huge The Warning fan and IM'd him on Facebook out of the blue to ask a question about the Error album. He got back to me in the same evening with an answer. David is a class act.
I got to meet him when The Warning played in Toronto back in June... Good vibes!!!
I need to find some videos discussing Danys guitar tones.
Getting old myself; 64.Seen Zeppelin, Mahavishnu Orchestra, U.D.O. Maynard Ferguson, Heart, Pat Benetar , Mountain and a couple of hundred more in all genres. I am here to tell you The Warnings Error is hands down the best album I have heard maybe ever. Dany's vocals are gripping. The tunes are catchy, the lyrics are akin to Rush or any great band ever, Seen Rush, Seen Tull, but the power and emotive delivery of those 3 sisters is pure joy. Absolutely love them. Their prior 2 albums as well are superb. Error is just a pinnacle work of art.
The Warning….the mexicans sisters have a lot of talent! Three full albuns at the age of 18, 20 and 22. Great melodies, lyrics, arrangements, vocals…all so intense. ⚡️⚡️⚡️👍😀
To be real ale was 16 at the time ... Makes It even bigger
Rick should really do a 'What Makes This Song Great' if not an entire feature (or interview) on The Warning. So many nuggets and gems within their songs that he'll love, it's as if they watch his vids and apply what they've viewed. They write amazing music and as David mentioned have no fluff either lyrically or musically. Everything has a purpose and nothing is done for the sake of just doing it.
Yes, please!!
The Warning is outstanding. One of the interesting things is you can watch their progression from very young musicians to what they are today. Their cover of Enter the Sandman is inspired. You can see Ale move from 4 string to 5 string bass. I would love to see a few more guitar solos in some of their songs.
Great video. Love The Warning.
Rick, I see that people keep telling you that The Warning is "the real deal". They are!
Rick, if you haven't checked out the new Warning album that David worked on, you should take a listen. Talented musicians who give me hope that rock has a bright future. 😃
Hell, everything they have recorded is worth hearing. It's not all perfect, but damn, it is REAL. I like their show at Liceo De Monterrey in June of 2015 on Trey Salazar's channel. It is phenomenal, considering they were 10, 12, and 15! Ale was a fourth grader playing *Hysteria* by Muse. All three of them were amazing. Perfect? No. But still jaw dropping. It was so cool to see their classmates singing along to their ORIGINAL LYRICS.
Yes. Finally. Would like to hear Rick do a WMTSG on a Warning song. There are many.
David did great things with The Warning! Best band out there
I came to hear David Bendeth talk about The Warning, I stayed for a riveting conversation. I could sit and listen to the two of you swap stories all day long.
The Warning, The Warning, The Warning, The WARRRRRNNNIIINNGGGG...thank you Mr Bendeth for doing such great and important work
The Warning Army out in force in the comment section. Hour long interview, maybe a minute talking about the Warning, and several hundred comments about them (including this one). Gotta love that baritone guitar in the new stuff.
Automatic Sun rocking the baritone 🤟🏻
I will have to check out The Warning. Paramore is absolute gold, Riot really helped break them big. Misery Business is a staple of alternative rock. The whole album is great, check out Fences for a quick change up.
All of The Warning's music is good, their latest album ERROR is 'next level' for them!!!
Then start from the very beginning - 2013 / 14 or even earlier.
Their Enter Sandman cover 2014 when they were 14,12 & 9 years old broke the internet. After that jump to the present to watch their interpretation of the song performed live in Mexico City on 08.29.2022. This interpretation was part of Metallica's Black List released in 2021.
And then move onto their originals from 2015 till today. (One thing though always check out the date of performance & their ages).
What a story!!!
Totally loved the interview! And it brings me full circle - 13 months ago I learned of The Warning and David Bendeth from Rick, and now here is Rick with David!!
13 months ago, was that a Rick Beato video? Which one? I've watched most of his vids and this is the first time I've seen him discuss Bendeth or The Warning.
His work with The Warning is flawless, such great album production.
He did a great job with the new The Warning album, for what it looks they loved working with him.
I think that the feeling was the same by David to, although they storm in his studio like an army.
He attended two of their shows on the past tour, once in New York City and once in Toronto. So, yeah, they have a connection, now. And I believe one of those show was on his birthday.
I just wish you could hear the attack on the kick drum in evolve... specifically for the double kick in the instrumental section.... oh well, can't have everything :-)
ms7624 Who attended the shows? David Bendeth? Or Rick ?
I just learned about The Warning a few days ago and I’m really glad they’re on Rick’s radar. He can help them get more exposure.
They are phenomenal.
I’m fascinated by David’s stories. And he did a great job with The Warning. @35:36
Great interview Rick. I know of David by his work with The Warning. After this interview, I have a new found respect for his career and talent. That's what I love about your channel, I'm always learning something new.
There is so much great stuff from The Warning's three full-length albums. I'm still in awe of the quality of their LPs. Queen Of The Murder Scene has become my favorite CD in my large collection.
I hope they talk about The Warning 🙏
David complimented their lyrics, saying that they had no fluff, basically that they are relevant to what people want to hear.
Watched Allison Hagendorf's interview with The Warning and was a great interview! They said that when they worked with David it was like learning play all over again because he told them they were playing together like individuals. They said that they learned a lot about playing together as a group! That is such a great compliment from them to David's style.
Rick! Loved this sit down with David! Please do a review of The Warning's "Error" album or at least a track or two. The Warning are amazing in every aspect of songwriting, playing, lyrics, just incredible and the present and future of Rock! And just what you said you like, Real musicians playing real music! No Fluff, just Greatness!
David, you succeeded. Error by The Warning has inspired me to play an instrument again. And learn Spanish. The Warning have become Muses to me.
Great interview, Rick! David seems like a great guy and he did a fantastic job with ERROR by The Warning!
Rick should listen to all of The Warning's albums in order. He can then note the group's progress in songwriting, musicianship, showmanship, and maturity.
He produced their latest ERROR so I bet David knows all about their songwriting and musicianship. Showmanship doesn't come across listening to them, you got to catch a live show to see that.
I have not bought music since the mid 80's. "The Warning" changed that for me to where I am VERY happy to spend money and buy their vinyl. It's not merely that they have a sound I've been **starving** for, their whole story is endearing and heartwarming -- it makes them extremely compelling to me. Opinions may vary.
Great chat! Learned watching these two Gems! David did an excellent job producing and mixing The Warning’s Error album and never was a true Rock fan until The Warning! A classic rock band with a modern flare! Keep rocking Guy’s , keep Evolving!!
Here’s two guys that love to listen more than talk. They turned it into careers. If we all really listened instead of talked the world would be a better place.
Damn I had no idea he worked on Paramore's Riot. One of the most sonically pleasing albums I've ever listened to
SCAM

The Warning!!! Best new rock band! Check ‘em out
Rick, David is correct, your interviews are something different. Your interviews with Sting and Billy Corgan were really engrossing and entertaining. You really seem to put artists at ease, I assume its because you are in the industry/peer and not just a reporter or journalist. Keep up the great work Rick.
More David Bendeth please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great interview!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paramore Riot was an epic album. Insanely good.
Amen! My teenage years. I was 17 when that album came out and it blew my mind when i saw miz biz on mtv.
David Bendeth is a pure legend. Great interview. Also very cool to hear him talking about seeing all those classic artists. 🙌🙌🙌
These interviews are amazing. The Warning is such a great band and the album is incredible as they are.
I like how Rick's voice is in my left ear and David is in my right ear. Makes me feel like I am right there.
What a smart exchange between two knowledgeable true music lovers.
I was deeply touched when David mentioned my favorite band, The Warning. Those young girls are old rock souls with fresh music and sharp lyrics that smartly chronicle today´s world.
Looking forward to the Rick Beato The Warning interview. If you haven’t already, listen to the error album. They are the entire package. Skill, talent, originality, looks and great song writing.
Most of all, they OWN whatever stages they play on. Their confidence and charisma in front of 500 or 50,000 is top tier.
Oh my days. I'm a little embarrassed. a year ago I was playing his 1st. album "Adrenalin" that i bought when it came out and thinking whatever happened to this guy?
Bro' are you kidding me? I've been listening to his productions on various bands for years without even knowing it.
Much respect to you David. Rick you did it again mate.
Rick: the interview you did with David was excellent! Please consider giving "Error " by The Warning a try that David produced, and see what you think of there music !!!
This man's voice is amazing. Idk why I feel like I have to say that but there you go
I thought they were going to discuss The Warning more, but anyways…I must agree with a lot of the other commenters that you should do some sort of review of the three young sisters from Monterrey, Mexico. They have 3 albums to date, and all of them are incredible considering how old they were when they made the first one. Great lyrics, great sound and arrangements, but what’s most impressive is their musicianship. Again, such accomplished instrument players at such a young age. And I’m assuming they don’t use Autotune or Pro Tools much because they just don’t need it. I’ve seen many of their live videos and got to see them live in Vegas, and they sound great! Although all the sisters can sing, Daniela, the eldest (guitarist and lead vocals), really has a powerful voice. She has great range, clean tones, energy, and awesome facial expressions! From what I can gather, Paulina, the middle sibling, is the primary songwriter and has really done a fantastic job with the lyrics, arrangements, and subjects -as you and David discussed. These young ladies ARE the real deal and it would be nice if you covered them in one of your videos. Aloha!
That is what Rick and David talked about during their interview. That something special we noticed when we all listened to The Warning is the same feeling David was talking about. For me it was their live performances that showed me how special this band is.
David’s a legend in the Canadian music industry. God knows, I submitted tonnes of demos to him, of various bands I was in, years ago when I was trying to get our bands signed. Great stuff, Rick!

That’s one crazy deep voice…
When someone you respect and care about says i'm so proud of you... I'm sure Rick will remember this for a long time.
I just had a massive (you know your getting old when…) flashback….you both have the gift of musical gab “ hey ! someone throw them another cheese sandwich “✌️
The "is it a song without lyrics?" question reminded me of an Eddie Van Halen quote, "Some people say a song without vocals isn't a song. Tell Beethoven that and he'll kick your ass."
That part near the end where you guys mention that song recording is time-traveling hits so hard. I have an old Victrola record player from 1915 and some really old records that date to the 1910s-1950s. One of the records is from 1915 and it's like listening to ghosts. Every musician, vocalist, everyone involved in making that record is long gone but here I am in 2022 hearing their voices.
So, I've enjoyed of all things Beato, but...to learn he's a mutual friend of David's; next level! This is such great news for me!
David mastered my favorite record Lost in the Sound of Separation by Underoath. Sonically and musically it's the best album I've ever heard.
I love that Rick has these type interviews. My 70s teenage self is happy.
Dave wouldn't remember me because we ran in completely different circles, but we were both at Georges Vanier Secondary in Don Mills, Ontario at the same time. The guys from Rush had already graduated by the time I got there, but I did see one of their early shows one Saturday night in the cafeteria/auditorium. I remember Dave playing in a band to with twin brothers. We also had Alanna Myles (her last name was Byles at that time) in our class. There was a lot talent in that school.
Just joined TWA last week and landed on this interview. I loved the interview, as well as the Steven Wilson interview. I just started mixing live shows and am building a small studio to learn recording. By the way the new The Warning songs are rock perfection. So well mixed to capture their personalities.
Keeping Us Fed
Great to hear you guys talk about music. That Paramore album is such a great album with that weird 3/4 - 4/4 song, always had fun teaching that 🙂
Hey Rick it would be amazing if did a what a what makes this song great episode on both Paramore and The Warning.
Late to seeing this video. Very happy they mention my dear friend and mentor, Roy Thomas Baker. RTB was light years ahead of everyone else. To think he recorded Bohemian Rhapsody on 16 track is astonishing. A brilliant producer, engineer, and maybe one of the funniest people you will ever meet. A true innovator.
Guys, great interview - so interesting. Dave and The Warning - what a colossal achievement - I'm sure the girls learned lot of things, but I'm pretty sure Dave learned a thing or two along the way too. Talking about amazing guitar players, Tina S, who unfortunatelly hss disappeared from the music scene is/was one of these amazing players. Did you know that Tina S. guitar teacher (jazz-rock guitarist: Renaud Louis-Servais.) also has been Dany from The Warining guitar teacher?
Great interview. Just wished he would have talked more about his experiences with The Warning. I have not been excited like this about a rock band in 30 years. Rick should really do a spotlight/interview with them, as their story is incredible, plus they could share a lot of knowledge, on how to use social media and grow as an independent band in the age of the Internet, which they did for years before getting signed recently.
Hey Dave! I went to Georges Vanier high school in Toronto with you and your sister - great to see and hear you interviewed by Rick! I love the topic too.
Wow, David has had his hands in some great music. Loved hearing that he signed the Cowboy Junkies; such a great, underrated group.
I have that Elvis disc. Bought it when it was released. Fantastic! I bought it for a long road trip with my kids, and I wanted them to hear Elvis. To this day, my kids still listen to that disc.
Please make David a regular guest. This was a joy to watch and now I have Feel the Real in my regular rotation!
Wow ... David Bendeth! "Feel the Real" is such a groundbreaking tune ...
Wow David "Feel the Real" Bendeth! One of the classic Jazz Funk tracks!
Awesome that you brought up The Warning. Please do an episode about these talented young sisters from Mexico. Rock is still alive and well and in the very capable and talented hands of these ladies. 🎶🎸💕🤘🏼
They suck.
