  • After being contacted about a number of CRT televisions and computer monitors, we find there were a few more than we expected ...
If you are interested in taking any of these purely as spare parts and you have the knowledge to work on them safely, please email crt@computinghistory.org.uk

Before long, CRT's will be as rare as hen's teeth, and highly sought after. Definitely well worth preserving.

I've squirrelled 4 crts in my man cave for older analogue output computers. Modern flatscreens with their digital processing of older (and slightly funky) analogue signals doesn't turn out well visually.

Definitely worth parting these out!! horizontal output transistors, delay lines, even the gun amplifier transistors on the neck board are worth having (those transistors also make great VAS stages in audio amplifiers!)
I remember those old TV's that had wooden cases... pretty much like the one we had from D.E.R (a TV hire place) when I was a kid

Sad to see the state of CRTs now. It doesn't seem that long ago at all when they were still being sold in the main shops.
Well, I guess it wasn't that long ago in the scheme of things. I know some Countries still use them a fair bit.
The pricing of TVs in the mid-to-late 90s probably didn't help their demise. lol
I remember seeing most widescreen TVs with "100Hz" processing costing around £600-800 back then, which was ridiculous.
(and the 100Hz/120Hz processing often looked awful, like the "Soap opera effect" thing, and super grainy.)
It's only recently that I started using a CRT again for retro computers/consoles, after somebody kindly donated a 20" JVC monitor. It's fairly similar to the models you had behind you in the intro.
I used to repair CRTs a lot in the 90s/00s, and even I forgot just how nice the image can look.
From about 1989 onwards, I used to make my own RGB SCART cables for as many of our computers as possible, like the CPC 6128.
I was never a fan of using RF, so would at least try to get Composite out of a machine if possible.
If only I lived closer to Cambridge, I'd be happy to volunteer my time to help repair and restore CRTs and computers.

  • @SimonSideburns

I'm pretty sure I saw a Grundig Super Color 22" TV in that pile. I've got the one my family bought in the early 1980s in my shed. It likely needs some TLC too, and spares for it would be good as those components aren't going to last forever.

I have one of these as well as a few similar ones. The tuners all have dry joints, so if you can't tune into an old game console or computer, check the solder joints in the tuner.

Might be worth posting on the UKVAC forums or letting places like Arcade Club know about these. I'm certainly no expert, but they might be able to make use of some of the tubes or the internals to extend the life of their machines.
Would certainly be an enormous shame if most of these go to landfill. I wish you lots of luck saving them from the tip!
(Got to say, I saw the same model B&W Ferguson portable with the rotary tuning dial that we used though my childhood with our Speccy.
Used to be able to get a damn good picture on that once you'd got it tuned in, even if it was in black and white. No colour clash for me!.
Used that all the way up until I got my Atari ST and a 14" Sharp Colour portable for my 18th birthday. Still got that one in my loft on standby in case my Trinitron breaks down).

    • @tsd550
      @tsd550 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think (not certain), that the model with the printer was a Pye, (possibly available as a Philips model too), but crucially was the Prestel model, (which included teletext).
This applies to the U.K. market, and it was a long time ago, so I may be wrong.

The majority of the last TV's were based upon one of another identical circuits. No point reinventing the wheel. Especially when all of the major brands were swallowed up and all still sold TV's under there respective brands, either slap the right labels on it and send it out the factory door. It still happens today with white goods, if you cannot find the part for your washing machine look for identical machines made by the same group of companies and you will probably find it's the same parts, just research first.
Some of the last Sanyo TV's were Sony Trinitron TV's with different product codes, Bush and Alba TV's were all made in same factory with almost identical part numbers, as were Grundig, Goodman's, and JVC. Some were just sold to different markets, but we're identical except for regional changes like tuning or timing, which in later models were firmware changes saving even more money.

I would imagine you guys were a bit envious over what we had here in North America Canada-US, when it came to TVs.
But to be honest, I think what Europe has and had when it comes to electronics, are definitely very interesting.
I still don't see why, things must be different, when it comes to voltages obviously but when it comes to design and style, not so much.
Also a better term for some of these TVs, would be North American NOT American.

    • @tsd550
      @tsd550 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

North America used the NTSC broadcast system, Europe used (mainly) the PAL system, in different versions depending on the country. France used the SECAM system. None of these were interchangeable. In Some markets, especially the Middle East, you could buy multi standard sets if you had plenty of money and enjoyed making life really difficult for yourself!

Haha, thanks Tim for making me even more conscious of my ummmms! I know I do it A LOT! :)
It was filmed live walking around these TVs on the spur of the moment. I haven't got the time to sit down and write a script and re-voice it all. I just did it to see if I can get others to help rescue these, not as a 'proper' presented video.
Trouble is my talk box stops working if my brain isn't driving it. I'm like the sound chip in the BBC Micro. The low pitched first beeb (The Ummmm) is when the processor isn't running and hasn't initialised the sound chip. The second beep (me talking) is when the processor (my brain) is running .... :)
Sorry if I annoyed you with my ummms, but you should try living it!
