I don't like replacing pinned comments for stuff like this, but it's necessary this time. Anyways... Some of you guys are absolutely pathetic. Since you weren't smart enough to understand when I said this the first time... I do NOT hate Mars' redesign. I just slightly dislike it, but it's still better than a lot of the other ones. And no, her body itself isn't a problem at all. All bodies are beautiful! I can even relate to her since I'm a little big myself. Also, I literally said it's nice, which is a compliment, and my favorite redesign also happens to have a bigger body. It's hilarious how blind you guys are. Moving on...notice how I said the body _itself_ isn't a problem? That's because I'm just confused why she of all people has it. She's an alien, which means she's not from Earth. Why should she have anatomy that's normal to us Earthlings, then? I'm not saying she should have 4 tentacles, 5 eyes, 20 legs, or something like that, but the old unrealistic body type actually worked in her favor. It's not insane enough to make her look a bit ugly, but it's unusual enough to make her stand out from everyone else with normal bodies. She is the weird one, after all! Too bad you didn't think of that one, huh? As a summary, I'm not sorry you don't understand the basic concept of an alien, and I'm especially not sorry you can't accept that I can criticize anything I want. If you still can't accept this, get off my channel and do something more useful with your life. To all the normal people who might disagree but get where I'm coming from and respectfully voice their opinions, props to you. ^^

I personally am not one of those said people. :) I tooootally get where you're coming from with Mars, and honestly, every other character, as well. You really payed attention to their design, personality, character in general and rated the redesigns based on how well they fit with the characters' well... Character. Y'know? Good job on that!!
This seems a bit harsh, I personally like mars new body type, and if she’s just an alien like you said then she shouldn’t have a skinny body either, she should have a blob body and tentacles, cause I highly doubt aliens have just a skinny body. No offense though it’s your opinion and you can interpret mars how you want, although I am sorry if your receiving harassment for a bit of miswording.

when i saw the moon’s redesign, i knew we LOST HARD… the oversimplified design doesn’t work with most of them, and some of the outfits look just so bland. maybe they were going for more animation friendly designs but the old designs had so much charm and detail and it’s pretty heartbreaking to see them turned into this 💔
I honestly think the original designs were animation friendly as is. They're not too overly detailed and and the proportions are exaggerated so smaller details would be easier to draw. If the show were to happen, it would probably be rigged like how FIM was, so details such as Saturn's hoops would be less of a hassle than if they were to be drawn frame by frame. I think the redesigns were made to cater to a younger audience? The rounded out art style and less overall edge seems to lean into that, but it just ended up losing a lot of its charm. Appealing to a younger audience doesn't mean getting rid of cool details and outfits (Especially true with Mars).
@@Spamlum i definitely agree, i think pluto’s less defined skulls and mercury’s longer hair are the most prominent examples. and i’m also guessing that these were made with the intent of selling merchandise of? mainly because of the fact that mercury’s hair is longer and saturn’s missing nose ring but yeah, it seems like a major step backwards in terms of their initial designs. i’m sure younger kids would have loved their original designs too

A note: You can still make chubby characters look sharp and sleek! Just because the character's body type is rounder doesnt really mean everything else has to be too. You can even stylize the body to fit better!

Finally someone who actually came forward to explain all the flaws! It's very agreeable that the redesigns seem to lack charm and are far less energetic than the old designs. But some good new details remain. I might make a video where I "fix" the redesigns.
Honestly, I was thinking of RE-redesigning them too! My pfp is even a RE-redesign of The Moon (well, she's basically just the original)! Though I decided not to continue since I'm lazy and I am a bit attached lol. I'm looking forward to seeing your ideas! I stopped after Saturn whose drawing is honestly my favorite
As much as I love Lauren Faust works, these redesigns don't sit right with me. I don't know, the old art style had this special charm for me, but also the old designs seemed much more detailed and related to the planets they were originally intended to represent. In my opinion, Mars got the worst one, her outfit has lost so much of the color palette that originally made her unique and matched her personality. I don't hate the new designs though, some of them look really cool and have some interesting ideas, but overall old designs win in almost every aspect.
Yup. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that she's the same person who made the original designs, plus her other amazing work. However, the redesigns were a collab with another animator, so maybe that played a part in it. I'm really not sure, but either way, I agree with you.
Yeah, I agree. Mars is cute in the redesign but she's also less detailed and doesn't quite represent her personality and traits as well, her design (hair, clothes) should've been more spikey still.
I really MISS cartoon styles when it has sharp outlines and great outstanding sillioette. Im just sick of seeing styles that look like it came cal arts esque these days.

Dude, the big handed/big foot body design of the originals is so perfect for a show where everyone wear roller skates it's ABSURD. The skates are so small in the redesigns, it makes them feel more like an afterthought, rather than a feature uniting the characters. I mean, they're planets for pete's sake! The skates hinted at their revolving nature, made the show's gimmick apparent at a first glance "they represent planets, they skate around like planets revolve". Simple, elegant, beautiful. Not so much now.
One big issue I notice with all the new designs is how unoticeable the roallerskates have become. The old designs all had the roallerskates very big and visibles. The new ones might as well have regular shoes...
Im just gonna say that i NEED the pink skates and ESPECIALLY the sleeves back on mars. Those orangish-red sleeves made mars's color palette a lot more diverse and it was good to look at. They also gave off the artsy vibe of her personality! Overall, i feel like they are trying to make the designs more child-like, like most new cartoons, for example by changing the face analogies or the lipstick and also by making the edges smoother. I personally like the more "edgier" edges but i guess nowadays most find smoother edges appealing in cartoons
Same. It's hard when some are good, bad, or just mediocre. I would love 3.5/4.0 designs too. I've been having such a hard time accepting the fact that we may never get the old designs in all their detailed glory. 😢
These are all lacking the signature style and personality that we all have come to love about Lauren Faust's art. I get that she's trying to incorporate more body types, but these designs just break the flow of what the original was going for just to match what modern cartoons are doing.
In the early design they all look like a superheroes, from their look and their accesorries that shows more cooler things each of the character. But the new design are more describing that they are your friends and more drawen casually (sorry for my broken english)
9:00 My biggest issue with Uranus is her eyes. Why are they so squinty??? Her mouth is also way too small, yes, but the eyes! I can't help but think she looks like a stereotype of an Asian girl which kinda makes it worse because Uranus's whole thing is that she's smart
OMG yes! I wished I said that earlier because I felt the same way. I really hate how squinted her eyes are. Not as expressive and almost as bad as the removal of The Great Red Spot!
I genuinely miss the twiggy designs because thats what made them so 2010s and special Will miss the old ones but atleast they are getting recondition years later

It gives a look into how bad fashion has become. I know this is bad, but one reason I wish the show got accepted is so we would never get those redesigns, like, ever. I would rather have designs with no body diversity that make sense rather than diverse ones that make no sense at all. I understand that some redesigns are okay...but that's how they are at best.

I think the Mars redesign is adorable, and as a design on it's own it's incredible! The way the colors are spread through the outfit are amazing and her body type compliments her hair shape wonderfully. However it conveys absolutely no information about the character, in fact it portrays wrong information. As you said she looks like a kindergartner teacher, and that's just not Mars at all. The old design had a beautiful use of color theory and subtle details to portray her personality. Honestly, I think Mars' old look would be adorable in the new artstyle with the new body type.
As someone who has never even heard of Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls until this video appeared in my recommendeds, I liked how 'spunky(?)' the old Mars design looked, with her fuzzy orange jacket and crop top Her redesign is alr on its own but kind of a dial back compared to the old
They used to look like teenagers (16 - 19) and now most of them look like tweens… (10 - 12) and a big problem I had is that it almost looks like it’s trying to imitate the power puff girls style, I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence or not. Also does anyone else think that the newer Uranus looks like the “smart Asian” stereotype? With the old one it was kinda subtle or you could just think she had slimmer eyes but the newer version is shoving it in your face that she’s asian.
Rereading this comment, I personally find that the Uranus redesign resembles more of the stereotype than Venus. It also doesn't help that she's a straight A student, so... Otherwise, I agree that Venus' eyes are WAY too slanted and detailed. I hate how so little effort is put into the rest of the body, and then the eyes are all "GIVE ME ATTENTION!!"
I think I'm biased because im a huge fan of sharp angles and sharp cartoon styles so just having everything ROUNDED out made it look bad immediately even if it was a fine reDesign
And I don’t want to sound like a giant karen, but I really like the sharpness of the older designs, like Pluto with round shapes does NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT sit right with for me :/ Saturns rings ARE GOONE NOOOOAOoooOoOoOoOooOOo And I really dislike the removal of Mars’s sort of puffy orange sleeves, they were the reason why I liked mars in the first place, because her clothes were exotic Venus isn’t that bad in my opinion tbh Jupiters pants from the older design kinda fit her because she’s supposed to be a hippie i think… and the red mark on her head needs to come back. I very much agree with this opinion. To me every redesign looks so... childish (?) and bland. The Sun and Saturn were so good, though. Also kinda like the eye shape for Neptune

I think personally that the main problem is in artstyle. It became less dynamic, edgy and energetic, so that's why I got the feeling that new designs are much "softer" and less charismatic than the old ones. And this style doesn't go well with some Galaxy Girls' personalities(Like Pluto, for example)
1. The loss of big, chunky shoes to teensy little feet feels so counterintuitive. It's a show about girls who skate around, and you're gonna make the skates the least prominent part of the design? Part of the reason why these designs are so loved is because of the focus on their skates. It could've been a niche show about roller skating that maybe only a certain demographic would love; but in a world where modern animation keeps trying to appeal to EVERYONE, this would've be a nice change of pace. (Also, chunky shoes are a fashion trend rn, why didn't they take note of that? The iconic skate designs would've made good merchandise too). 2. The new artstyle looks too childish. The original art and designs looked more geared towards tweens to younger teens, but now it looks like it's for 5 year olds. There's also a loss in shape language and asymmetry with the designs, so now everything feels too uniform and 'corporate-y'. Uranus suffers the worse from the 'childification' of the designs, she looks more like a 12 year old rather than the 'college student' look she had previously. 3. SHOW DON'T TELL is absolutely the key to fixing these designs. There were so many elements that pertained to certain characters' personalities, design inspirations, etc. I'm an artist myself and little details like Jupiter 'Great Red Spot' and Moon's hair go a long way. It's sad to see this kind of stuff sacrificed for the sake of easier animation, but does unique and interesting character design need to be sacrificed for this too?
4:27 I dont like how Mercury looked more calmer and more caring, Sorta like she WAS caring. Her hair that went longer was a issue because Mercury, well doesnt care about anything like that. And she looked WAY too bland. Like she doesnt have a personality. Old design Mercury however, Was more expressive, and resembled the uncaring competitive childhood stereotype PERFECTLY. And they made old design Mercurys ear-wings into wing EARRINGS! I liked the fantasy feel to her, and they completely removed that! Positives: I liked how they removed her lipstick. They feel more natural, and felt more sporty. I LOVED how they made Mercurys tall rollerskates into more sporty ones. I mean, you can still see the little circles but they were still so goood!!
I'm personally miffed about the change from short hair to longer hair. What is wrong with giving female characters short hair that isn't a bob? Literally the one female character in kids animation with short hair that I can name is Gwen Tennyson. I really wish more fem characters in kids animation had short, pixie cut hair. I also feel like some of the changes were made so that Mercury didn't look too similar to Rainbow Dash, but giving her longer hair completely ruins it. She legitimately just looks like an alternative Equestria Girls RD
I agree with you! I think the only redesign I actually like better than the original is the sun, otherwise I prefer all the originals. Its nice that they have more diverse body types, but in general its disappointing how less detailed they all are and how watered down they look. The style is so much rounder than before and they all look much younger. The original feels more like a series for teens, and the new designs look distinctly like a show for little kids. Anyone can have their opinions about the designs, but I totally agree with your takes.
I think one of my biggest problems with the redesigns was the artstyle change, I feel like the shaper style and the chunkier roller skates made them feel a lot more unique and cool and now even for the few characters designs who didn’t change that much it still feels worse because the more basic artstyle makes it constantly feel like they’re missing something.

i liked milky ways og design better, the way the hair is cut looks more unique and gives a more interesting silhouette imo. also the og poses were a lot more expressive and feels more connected the way that shes actually looking at the viewer. i fully agree with your critique of the new style doesnt give off the same edge and it feels like another nickelodeon show in that aspect, looks like it was a knockoff steven universe. as for the sun, i feel like it was *alright.* i honestly prefer the personality the og gave with her being bright, warm, funny, and comforting. the redesign just doesnt give off the same energy. NOW FOR MOON.. my favorite character with my least favorite redesign. they got rid of her signature dress...they ruined her hair..she looks like a side character who showed up twice and cried. the og gives off more fluttershh, kind, quiet, the redesign gives off more over dramatic, too sensitive and its just not the same. not much to say abt mercury, but i just cant really get behind the new design..it looks wrong??
Mars is the RED PLANET and in the new design theres LITERALLY not a single bit of red or orange in her new design? I get that she’s supposed to be an alien, but they did that perfectly in her old design with the orange jacket, which not only fit her personality perfectly but also gives her something that resembles the actual planet. I also dislike the cutesy-ness(?) of all the new designs, and especially the big chunky skates. The skates were what tied everything together but now they just look like shoes with wheels
I loved how each part of the design had a motif or purpose to it, like mercury's metallic clothes to represent the literal element, or how the lightning earrings and symbol for jupiter represent the god, but these redesigns negate almost all of that. There isn't as much thought into the designs are they used to be.

EXACTLY! I STRUGGLE to think of reasons why they're completely gone now. Like, how does she have so many to the point where she has a BELLY BUTTON ring, but now she has NONE? There's literally no reason for this. It's so dumb and frustrating.
these criticisms are so real!! i think the new designs are nice but they definitely feel diluted compared to the old ones. also i don't get why a lot of redesign/reboot designs are just rounder in general (clone high, powerpuff girls)? it feels like character designers have become allergic to sharp angles i do like mars a lot though, even though it doesnt really fit with the personality i still think she looks cute :)
My problem with Uranus is that I'm not getting any spacey, cosmic vibes from her design. She's really cute, but she looks like she fits in more in a slice-of-life cartoon
Dawg. I was 50 seconds in the video before I realised the designs on the bottom were the _old_ ones. I thought they were the new ones! I feel that her poses in the old one were definitely more energetic and immediately caught my eye.
i really liked how some of the characters had bigger bodies but in some cases I just didn't, I think the only body ignorance network that really captivated me was the sun
Honestly, I quite like the Jupiter redesign. The unique head shape helps personify her more and makes her stand out. The dress helps a lot to make her less lopsided, as I noticed that in the original she's very top-heavy, something bad for a roller skater. I also love how it makes the Jupiter pattern stand out more and isn't as awkward and bright, where it was sort of cluttered being right on top of her roller skates, a bright area of the design. I do agree the hair looks worse though, it's extremely flat.
About 7:01, I forgot to take the bottom of Jupiter's pants into consideration. They're fine too since they don't take up that much space either. I also forgot to exclude The Sun, Uranus, and again, Jupiter when it came to clothing symbols.

I mean, Yeah old design Venus also had a bland one, But the heart in the dress in old design Venus made it have lot of depth then it should be. Venus’s eyes are so.. SLANTED! I agree with the positives! Originally some designs weren't going to have positives at all, but I felt like it was too rude so I used "they didn't change that much" as a placeholder. Venus - 0/10
I really like it when stuff has sharp edges 10:29 And usually shark edges display stuff like being edgy or energetic which Pluto is so the sharp lines need to come back for her

Old designs give nostalgia. Now they are just. Kinda blank. Also their eyes. They dont have much expression. Although i do like saturns redesign even if its nothing like the planet.
Something I don’t like which I feel that was quite important for recognizing the show was the roller skates, in the older design, the roller skates had the essence and influence of the show, but in the new design, they are almost unnoticeable and look like toys. Also, is it me or does the new design of Uranus look like Edna from The Incredibles? (😭)

It would be cool to see them in the new artstyle, because it does have potential for more expressive silhouettes than just monster high-esque copy and paste lineup of tall, thin girls. Some styles and hairs could be updated, but I wish they weren't so drastically changed, like Moon's slit skirt turning into a dress etc.

I don’t even know much about what this is but I saw all the video and now I’m intrigued and I think I found a new hyper fixation lol This video is really well explained and made understand little bits of the characters I don’t have the context of, wich is great! I’m sad this aren’t the best designs Lauren Faust has created though, I hope her and the team can actually hear the criticism because I think the new designs have a lot of potential but clearly need fixing :3 Great video ❤️
I think the one that suffered worst from the art style change is Pluto. Given her look as like an edgy rock girl, having all of her edges softened and rounded really hurt the look.
the older poses were more exaggerated and dynamic, these went kinda lost in the redesigns, but I can see how they went simplified, looks like they could fit right in an animated show
Well, the 2010s were the last full decade we've had compared to the other ones, so it's more recent than the 2000s, 1990s, 1980s, etc. The 2010s is when we really started to see particular trends that would shape modern cartoons.
I think the problem is that the original designs were supposed to be dolls, with tons of small details to set each character apart while the updated ones feel like they were optimized for animation and so a lot of the details were lost. Its good they wanted to introduce diversity in body types (this issue was present in the original because they were meant to be dolls and doll lines typically have one or two molds they use for every character and then add details on top, both bc its cheaper and also so dolls can share clothes) but i feel like a lot of the charm was lost by switching to rounder less detailed style.
Wished Lauren Faust's kept the sharp/zigzag line for the redesign. It was the charm! She even uses them for Them's Fightin' Herds! Why not here too? For me, the biggest offense are Mars, Moon, Pluto and Uranus. Mars is obvious because she lack her colorful, kooky feel. Like others says, she looks like a teacher. I hate how her hair are poofy. For Moon, you don't get the poetess, melancholic vibe. She is now a sad little girl. I miss her dress. Pluto is the first character to have a redesign and boy, I already hate it! Why is her hair poofy? She is mean to be a hardcore punk/goth rock girl! The old hair is so much better for movement! And last but not least, Uranus. My god, Uranus, what did she do to her? She become a stereotypical nerd girl with her straight down hair and Asian face. Twilight is also a smart girl with straight hair but she doesn't go overly nerdy and her mane look like book spines, a reference on how she is smart, resourceful and organized. Uranus is mean to be a break out of smart characters! She is not only smart but determined (or ambitious as you says), wanting to put her knowledge for the greater good! Far from the isolating, anti-social bookworm image. Overall, the redesign are forgettable. The only one I like is Saturn.
My opinions on each redesign: The main problem is the soft and simple style, it strips away the characters' edge and personality. The fifth season of Rainbow High also has this problem, as it tries too hard to appeal to little girls to the point of taking the characters' personalities away. Milky Way - She looks nice but way too softened, I also don't like her bangs The Sun - Her clothes feel oversimplified and off without the cropped top, and her earrings look more like flowers rather than suns, but I like the 1970's black singer/disco vibes, reminds me of Nina Simone and Gloria Gaynor The Moon - She looks very pretty and I love her look, I also love her slim and tall body type, but her hair should have had different shades and her dress is rather casual compared to her old one Mercury - I love how she looks, but there are some unnecessary changes, like the ponytail, the shorter pants and the slight whitewashing Venus - I live how she didn't stray from her gorgeous old design, but her eye is way too big and her dress is too basic without the heart stamps Mars - Mars looks very cute with the chubby body type and the freckles, but the hair is too soft and her personality is not present in her clothes, she shouldn't have had her iconic orange fur coat taken away and the colors of her socks should be more vibrant Jupiter - She looks very pretty and it's a nice take on the old design, but her bangs are missing and so is her bindi, her top is also odd and she would look better with pants with this new skirt's stamp Saturn - I feel like this is an alternate outfit Saturn could wear, but her rings are missing and it would be better if her pants had their iconic rainbow details back Uranus - I don't like how she looks because she feels like a younger version of herself. The hair, sleeves and face are too oversimplified Neptune - The unkempt hair is a very nice touch, but she should have her iconic sunglasses back and a t-shirt instead of a cropped tank top just feels odd Pluto - Her outfit in the old version was too simple but it fit her, so her redesign could have had a ripped and more detailed outfit with a spiked belt. With a little more tweaking- they could be the new monster high. but the new designs some of them fr have ME tweaking.. 😭 as someone whos art speciality is character design lemme tell you- sacrificing detailed and complicated designs for an easier animation is a TRAGIC CURSE that befalls too many artists. Think shows like Ever After High, Monster High, Winx, Littlest Pet Shop (Bratz & Barbie) etc that embraced complex designs and singlehandedly raised a generation! To this day, whether they lasted 10 seasons or not, theyre still considered to be some of the most iconic shows (and movies) that gave fashion a more personal connection with identity. Ask yourself- would you prefer your show to air MANY episodes and seasons over a longer period of time, or have a shorter franchise that echos throughout the years and gets remembered as iconic or unforgettable- nostalgic even?

Pluto's design is nowhere near sharp enough, Jupiter and Mars deserves to have their bell bottoms and fluffy orange jacket back respectively, and WHY DO VENUS, URANUS AND MILKY'S EYES LOOK LIKE THAT??
There’s something about the old eye designs that I just… really liked. It was charming like powderpuff girls but if they were more of teens/adults. Also for clothing it’s SO much more expressive in the old style (except for the sun, her redesign clothes are great) and there’s just something that adds onto them in the old design. A note for Pluto is that she feels more like a kid trying to act like a teen or an ‘emo’, which just doesn’t fit right with me. Sure, Pluto is now confirmed to be a dwarf planet and no longer on our solar system but still, it just didn’t sit right with me. Btw the Moon got SO robbed of her old design. Bright it back please :(

Some of you guys are absolutely pathetic. Since you weren't smart enough to understand when I said this the first time... I do NOT hate Mars' redesign. I just slightly dislike it, but it's still better than a lot of the other ones. And no, her body itself isn't a problem at all. All bodies are beautiful! I can even relate to her since I'm a little big myself. Also, I literally said it's nice, which is a compliment, and my favorite redesign also happens to have a bigger body. It's hilarious how blind you guys are. Moving on...notice how I said the body _itself_ isn't a problem? That's because I'm just confused why she of all people has it. She's an alien, which means she's not from Earth. Why should she have anatomy that's normal to us Earthlings, then? I'm not saying she should have 4 tentacles, 5 eyes, 20 legs, or something like that, but the old unrealistic body type actually worked in her favor. It's not insane enough to make her look a bit ugly, but it's unusual enough to make her stand out from everyone else with normal bodies. She is the weird one, after all! Too bad you didn't think of that one, huh? As a summary, I'm not sorry you don't understand the basic concept of an alien, and I'm especially not sorry you can't accept that I can criticize anything I want. If you still can't accept this, get off my channel and do something more useful with your life.

when i saw the moon’s redesign, i knew we LOST HARD… the oversimplified design doesn’t work with most of them, and some of the outfits look just so bland. maybe they were going for more animation friendly designs but the old designs had so much charm and detail and it’s pretty heartbreaking to see them turned into this 💔
I honestly think the original designs were animation friendly as is. They're not too overly detailed and and the proportions are exaggerated so smaller details would be easier to draw. If the show were to happen, it would probably be rigged like how FIM was, so details such as Saturn's hoops would be less of a hassle than if they were to be drawn frame by frame.
I think the redesigns were made to cater to a younger audience? The rounded out art style and less overall edge seems to lean into that, but it just ended up losing a lot of its charm. Appealing to a younger audience doesn't mean getting rid of cool details and outfits (Especially true with Mars).
@@Spamlum i definitely agree, i think pluto’s less defined skulls and mercury’s longer hair are the most prominent examples. and i’m also guessing that these were made with the intent of selling merchandise of? mainly because of the fact that mercury’s hair is longer and saturn’s missing nose ring but yeah, it seems like a major step backwards in terms of their initial designs. i’m sure younger kids would have loved their original designs too

Finally someone who actually came forward to explain all the flaws! It's very agreeable that the redesigns seem to lack charm and are far less energetic than the old designs. But some good new details remain. I might make a video where I "fix" the redesigns.
Honestly, I was thinking of RE-redesigning them too! My pfp is even a RE-redesign of The Moon (well, she's basically just the original)! Though I decided not to continue since I'm lazy and I am a bit attached lol. I'm looking forward to seeing your ideas!

As much as I love Lauren Faust works, these redesigns don't sit right with me. I don't know, the old art style had this special charm for me, but also the old designs seemed much more detailed and related to the planets they were originally intended to represent. In my opinion, Mars got the worst one, her outfit has lost so much of the color palette that originally made her unique and matched her personality. I don't hate the new designs though, some of them look really cool and have some interesting ideas, but overall old designs win in almost every aspect.
Yup. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that she's the same person who made the original designs, plus her other amazing work. However, the redesigns were a collab with another animator, so maybe that played a part in it. I'm really not sure, but either way, I agree with you.

Dude, the big handed/big foot body design of the originals is so perfect for a show where everyone wear roller skates it's ABSURD. The skates are so small in the redesigns, it makes them feel more like an afterthought, rather than a feature uniting the characters. I mean, they're planets for pete's sake! The skates hinted at their revolving nature, made the show's gimmick apparent at a first glance "they represent planets, they skate around like planets revolve". Simple, elegant, beautiful.
Not so much now.
One big issue I notice with all the new designs is how unoticeable the roallerskates have become.
The old designs all had the roallerskates very big and visibles. The new ones might as well have regular shoes...

Im just gonna say that i NEED the pink skates and ESPECIALLY the sleeves back on mars. Those orangish-red sleeves made mars's color palette a lot more diverse and it was good to look at. They also gave off the artsy vibe of her personality!
Overall, i feel like they are trying to make the designs more child-like, like most new cartoons, for example by changing the face analogies or the lipstick and also by making the edges smoother. I personally like the more "edgier" edges but i guess nowadays most find smoother edges appealing in cartoons
Another note for Mars, orange would make so much sense to have in her palette since the surface of Mars is that dusty orange color!

I think the issue for me is that 3.0 feels like yet another IP starting to go down the "Minimalism drain" (Especially Moon).
These are all lacking the signature style and personality that we all have come to love about Lauren Faust's art. I get that she's trying to incorporate more body types, but these designs just break the flow of what the original was going for just to match what modern cartoons are doing.

My biggest issue with Uranus is her eyes. Why are they so squinty??? Her mouth is also way too small, yes, but the eyes! I can't help but think she looks like a stereotype of an Asian girl which kinda makes it worse because Uranus's whole thing is that she's smart
OMG yes! I wished I said that earlier because I felt the same way. I really hate how squinted her eyes are. Not as expressive and almost as bad as the removal of The Great Red Spot!

In terms of modernization, I'm with you. Something about the fashion doesn't feel very extreme and unique anymore. It gives a look into how bad fashion has become.
I know this is bad, but one reason I wish the show got accepted is so we would never get those redesigns, like, ever. I would rather have designs with no body diversity that make sense rather than diverse ones that make no sense at all. I understand that some redesigns are okay...but that's how they are at best.

I think the Mars redesign is adorable, and as a design on it's own it's incredible! The way the colors are spread through the outfit are amazing and her body type compliments her hair shape wonderfully. However it conveys absolutely no information about the character, in fact it portrays wrong information. As you said she looks like a kindergartner teacher, and that's just not Mars at all. The old design had a beautiful use of color theory and subtle details to portray her personality. Honestly, I think Mars' old look would be adorable in the new artstyle with the new body type.
As someone who has never even heard of Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls until this video appeared in my recommendeds, I liked how 'spunky(?)' the old Mars design looked, with her fuzzy orange jacket and crop top

They used to look like teenagers (16 - 19) and now most of them look like tweens… (10 - 12) and a big problem I had is that it almost looks like it’s trying to imitate the power puff girls style, I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence or not. Also does anyone else think that the newer Uranus looks like the “smart Asian” stereotype? With the old one it was kinda subtle or you could just think she had slimmer eyes but the newer version is shoving it in your face that she’s asian.
Rereading this comment, I personally find that the Uranus redesign resembles more of the stereotype than Venus. It also doesn't help that she's a straight A student, so...
Otherwise, I agree that Venus' eyes are WAY too slanted and detailed. I hate how so little effort is put into the rest of the body, and then the eyes are all "GIVE ME ATTENTION!!"

I think personally that the main problem is in artstyle. It became less dynamic, edgy and energetic, so that's why I got the feeling that new designs are much "softer" and less charismatic than the old ones. And this style doesn't go well with some Galaxy Girls' personalities(Like Pluto, for example)
1. The loss of big, chunky shoes to teensy little feet feels so counterintuitive. It's a show about girls who skate around, and you're gonna make the skates the least prominent part of the design? Part of the reason why these designs are so loved is because of the focus on their skates. It could've been a niche show about roller skating that maybe only a certain demographic would love; but in a world where modern animation keeps trying to appeal to EVERYONE, this would've be a nice change of pace. (Also, chunky shoes are a fashion trend rn, why didn't they take note of that? The iconic skate designs would've made good merchandise too).
2. The new artstyle looks too childish. The original art and designs looked more geared towards tweens to younger teens, but now it looks like it's for 5 year olds. There's also a loss in shape language and asymmetry with the designs, so now everything feels too uniform and 'corporate-y'. Uranus suffers the worse from the 'childification' of the designs, she looks more like a 12 year old rather than the 'college student' look she had previously.
3. SHOW DON'T TELL is absolutely the key to fixing these designs. There were so many elements that pertained to certain characters' personalities, design inspirations, etc. I'm an artist myself and little details like Jupiter 'Great Red Spot' and Moon's hair go a long way. It's sad to see this kind of stuff sacrificed for the sake of easier animation, but does unique and interesting character design need to be sacrificed for this too?

4:27 I dont like how Mercury looked more calmer and more caring, Sorta like she WAS caring. Her hair that went longer was a issue because Mercury, well doesnt care about anything like that. And she looked WAY too bland. Like she doesnt have a personality. Old design Mercury however, Was more expressive, and resembled the uncaring competitive childhood stereotype PERFECTLY. And they made old design Mercurys ear-wings into wing EARRINGS! I liked the fantasy feel to her, and they completely removed that!
Positives: I liked how they removed her lipstick. They feel more natural, and felt more sporty.
I LOVED how they made Mercurys tall rollerskates into more sporty ones. I mean, you can still see the little circles but they were still so goood!!
I'm personally miffed about the change from short hair to longer hair. What is wrong with giving female characters short hair that isn't a bob? Literally the one female character in kids animation with short hair that I can name is Gwen Tennyson. I really wish more fem characters in kids animation had short, pixie cut hair.
I also feel like some of the changes were made so that Mercury didn't look too similar to Rainbow Dash, but giving her longer hair completely ruins it. She legitimately just looks like an alternative Equestria Girls RD

I agree with you! I think the only redesign I actually like better than the original is the sun, otherwise I prefer all the originals. Its nice that they have more diverse body types, but in general its disappointing how less detailed they all are and how watered down they look. The style is so much rounder than before and they all look much younger. The original feels more like a series for teens, and the new designs look distinctly like a show for little kids. Anyone can have their opinions about the designs, but I totally agree with your takes.
I think one of my biggest problems with the redesigns was the artstyle change, I feel like the shaper style and the chunkier roller skates made them feel a lot more unique and cool and now even for the few characters designs who didn’t change that much it still feels worse because the more basic artstyle makes it constantly feel like they’re missing something.
Ngl Teen Titans Go and PowerPuff girls really impacted the industry more than people think 😭

i liked milky ways og design better, the way the hair is cut looks more unique and gives a more interesting silhouette imo. also the og poses were a lot more expressive and feels more connected the way that shes actually looking at the viewer. i fully agree with your critique of the new style doesnt give off the same edge and it feels like another nickelodeon show in that aspect, looks like it was a knockoff steven universe.
as for the sun, i feel like it was *alright.* i honestly prefer the personality the og gave with her being bright, warm, funny, and comforting. the redesign just doesnt give off the same energy.
NOW FOR MOON.. my favorite character with my least favorite redesign. they got rid of her signature dress...they ruined her hair..she looks like a side character who showed up twice and cried. the og gives off more fluttershh, kind, quiet, the redesign gives off more over dramatic, too sensitive and its just not the same.

Mars is the RED PLANET and in the new design theres LITERALLY not a single bit of red or orange in her new design? I get that she’s supposed to be an alien, but they did that perfectly in her old design with the orange jacket, which not only fit her personality perfectly but also gives her something that resembles the actual planet.
I also dislike the cutesy-ness(?) of all the new designs, and especially the big chunky skates. The skates were what tied everything together but now they just look like shoes with wheels
I loved how each part of the design had a motif or purpose to it, like mercury's metallic clothes to represent the literal element, or how the lightning earrings and symbol for jupiter represent the god, but these redesigns negate almost all of that. There isn't as much thought into the designs are they used to be.
Man most of these redesigns just kinda make me sad, not that they're necessarily bad, they just don't have the same charm as the old ones, they feel sorta bland. Plus I really miss characters with angles, idk there's just something appealing about sharp angles on cartoons.

I feel that her poses in the old one were definitely more energetic and immediately caught my eye.
i really liked how some of the characters had bigger bodies but in some cases I just didn't, I think the only body ignorance network that really captivated me was the sun
Honestly, I quite like the Jupiter redesign. The unique head shape helps personify her more and makes her stand out. The dress helps a lot to make her less lopsided, as I noticed that in the original she's very top-heavy, something bad for a roller skater. I also love how it makes the Jupiter pattern stand out more and isn't as awkward and bright, where it was sort of cluttered being right on top of her roller skates, a bright area of the design. I do agree the hair looks worse though, it's extremely flat.
About 7:01, I forgot to take the bottom of Jupiter's pants into consideration. They're fine too since they don't take up that much space either. I also forgot to exclude The Sun, Uranus, and again, Jupiter when it came to clothing symbols.

Negatives:
The dress in redesign Venus looks so bland. I mean, Yeah old design Venus also had a bland one, But the heart in the dress in old design Venus made it have lot of depth then it should be.
Venus’s eyes are so.. SLANTED! It looks like she has a eye disease. Old design Venus had more straight eyes that really added to her design as it feels alot more graceful, Like.. she was calm..
I absolutely hated how her earrings are so big! Just like the eyes, It feels unbalanced. It’s literally bigger then the body!

I agree with the positives! Originally some designs weren't going to have positives at all, but I felt like it was too rude so I used "they didn't change that much" as a placeholder.

Old designs give nostalgia. Now they are just. Kinda blank. Also their eyes. They dont have much expression. Although i do like saturns redesign even if its nothing like the planet.
Something I don’t like which I feel that was quite important for recognizing the show was the roller skates, in the older design, the roller skates had the essence and influence of the show, but in the new design, they are almost unnoticeable and look like toys. Also, is it me or does the new design of Uranus look like Edna from The Incredibles? (😭)

It would be cool to see them in the new artstyle, because it does have potential for more expressive silhouettes than just monster high-esque copy and paste lineup of tall, thin girls. Some styles and hairs could be updated, but I wish they weren't so drastically changed, like Moon's slit skirt turning into a dress etc.

I don’t even know much about what this is but I saw all the video and now I’m intrigued and I think I found a new hyper fixation lol This video is really well explained and made understand little bits of the characters I don’t have the context of, wich is great! I’m sad this aren’t the best designs Lauren Faust has created though, I hope her and the team can actually hear the criticism because I think the new designs have a lot of potential but clearly need fixing :3 Great video ❤️

I think the one that suffered worst from the art style change is Pluto. Given her look as like an edgy rock girl, having all of her edges softened and rounded really hurt the look.
the older poses were more exaggerated and dynamic, these went kinda lost in the redesigns, but I can see how they went simplified, looks like they could fit right in an animated show

Well, the 2010s were the last full decade we've had compared to the other ones, so it's more recent than the 2000s, 1990s, 1980s, etc. The 2010s is when we really started to see particular trends that would shape modern cartoons.

mostly they arent so bad. But jupiter.. oh how low it fell. the removal of bangs, the long skirt and the change of the earrings sucks.
I think the problem is that the original designs were supposed to be dolls, with tons of small details to set each character apart while the updated ones feel like they were optimized for animation and so a lot of the details were lost.
Its good they wanted to introduce diversity in body types (this issue was present in the original because they were meant to be dolls and doll lines typically have one or two molds they use for every character and then add details on top, both bc its cheaper and also so dolls can share clothes) but i feel like a lot of the charm was lost by switching to rounder less detailed style.
Wished Lauren Faust's kept the sharp/zigzag line for the redesign. It was the charm! She even uses them for Them's Fightin' Herds! Why not here too?
For me, the biggest offense are Mars, Moon, Pluto and Uranus. Mars is obvious because she lack her colorful, kooky feel. Like others says, she looks like a teacher. I hate how her hair are poofy.
For Moon, you don't get the poetess, melancholic vibe. She is now a sad little girl. I miss her dress.
Pluto is the first character to have a redesign and boy, I already hate it! Why is her hair poofy? She is mean to be a hardcore punk/goth rock girl! The old hair is so much better for movement!
And last but not least, Uranus. My god, Uranus, what did she do to her? She become a stereotypical nerd girl with her straight down hair and Asian face. Twilight is also a smart girl with straight hair but she doesn't go overly nerdy and her mane look like book spines, a reference on how she is smart, resourceful and organized. Uranus is mean to be a break out of smart characters! She is not only smart but determined (or ambitious as you says), wanting to put her knowledge for the greater good! Far from the isolating, anti-social bookworm image.
Overall, the redesign are forgettable. The only one I like is Saturn.

My opinions on each redesign:
The main problem is the soft and simple style, it strips away the characters' edge and personality. The fifth season of Rainbow High also has this problem, as it tries too hard to appeal to little girls to the point of taking the characters' personalities away.
Milky Way - She looks nice but way too softened, I also don't like her bangs
The Sun - Her clothes feel oversimplified and off without the cropped top, and her earrings look more like flowers rather than suns, but I like the 1970's black singer/disco vibes, reminds me of Nina Simone and Gloria Gaynor
The Moon - She looks very pretty and I love her look, I also love her slim and tall body type, but her hair should have had different shades and her dress is rather casual compared to her old one
Mercury - I love how she looks, but there are some unnecessary changes, like the ponytail, the shorter pants and the slight whitewashing
Venus - I live how she didn't stray from her gorgeous old design, but her eye is way too big and her dress is too basic without the heart stamps
Mars - Mars looks very cute with the chubby body type and the freckles, but the hair is too soft and her personality is not present in her clothes, she shouldn't have had her iconic orange fur coat taken away and the colors of her socks should be more vibrant
Jupiter - She looks very pretty and it's a nice take on the old design, but her bangs are missing and so is her bindi, her top is also odd and she would look better with pants with this new skirt's stamp
Saturn - I feel like this is an alternate outfit Saturn could wear, but her rings are missing and it would be better if her pants had their iconic rainbow details back
Uranus - I don't like how she looks because she feels like a younger version of herself. The hair, sleeves and face are too oversimplified
Neptune - The unkempt hair is a very nice touch, but she should have her iconic sunglasses back and a t-shirt instead of a cropped tank top just feels odd
Pluto - Her outfit in the old version was too simple but it fit her, so her redesign could have had a ripped and more detailed outfit with a spiked belt. Her hair feels too soft and a chubby soft body just feels off for her. I love her boots though.
With a little more tweaking- they could be the new monster high. but the new designs some of them fr have ME tweaking.. 😭 as someone whos art speciality is character design lemme tell you- sacrificing detailed and complicated designs for an easier animation is a TRAGIC CURSE that befalls too many artists. Think shows like Ever After High, Monster High, Winx, Littlest Pet Shop (Bratz & Barbie) etc that embraced complex designs and singlehandedly raised a generation! To this day, whether they lasted 10 seasons or not, theyre still considered to be some of the most iconic shows (and movies) that gave fashion a more personal connection with identity. Ask yourself- would you prefer your show to air MANY episodes and seasons over a longer period of time, or have a shorter franchise that echos throughout the years and gets remembered as iconic or unforgettable- nostalgic even?
YES! THIS COMMENT! So many new shows hate being complex for some reason. I'm so frustrated that the redesigns came with that side effect. Also, "some of them fr have ME tweaking" is gold. ^^

Pluto's design is nowhere near sharp enough, Jupiter and Mars deserves to have their bell bottoms and fluffy orange jacket back respectively, and WHY DO VENUS, URANUS AND MILKY'S EYES LOOK LIKE THAT??

There’s something about the old eye designs that I just… really liked. It was charming like powderpuff girls but if they were more of teens/adults. Also for clothing it’s SO much more expressive in the old style (except for the sun, her redesign clothes are great) and there’s just something that adds onto them in the old design. A note for Pluto is that she feels more like a kid trying to act like a teen or an ‘emo’, which just doesn’t fit right with me. Sure, Pluto is now confirmed to be a dwarf planet and no longer on our solar system but still, it just didn’t sit right with me.
Btw the Moon got SO robbed of her old design. Bright it back please :(
