    For people who might not know: Sloop is a real english word for a type of boat, which Canoe (SNES) and Hovercraft (N64) also are. I didn't know this either originally.
    The naming suggests that it is an emulator that was not originally developed by NERD but took over later.
    NERD tends to specifically seperate emulators that are made by them from scratch into the "Hanafuda" naming, while the rest use words that define boats.
    Kachikachi (NES), Hachihachi (DS, see Wii U VC), Hagi (GameCube), and the recently leaked Hiyoko (GB/C) are all Hanafuda based names.
    Some of the builds of Hiyoko (yes, several were leaked) are actual debug builds with debug information which gives function names and even more information on how it is developed. I have no more doubts on its legitimacy when I took a look into those builds in GHIDRA.

      @Gomam0n I think they did fix it as I played through the steam build like 5 days ago , and surprisingly I only had to install widescreen fix , the game had no other issues.. And I did compare it to the retail build , the file sizes were same. But Max Payne 1 on the other hand , wasn't very good even after applying the definitive fix.. Whenever there was intense gunfight scene , the game would outright crash..

    All this “Nintendo wouldn’t use something like a flash cart” assumes that Nintendo is a singular organism with one consistent personality.

    • @Dutchsnake5
      @Dutchsnake5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m pretty sure flashcarts are also commonly used by developers, both for emulation and even for modern game development purposes. Emulation is obvious enough; the ability to conveniently test ROMs back to back on original hardware without needing to pull out large and clunky devkits or several original game carts that you may or may not even have makes sense. It expedites the development process and makes it easier to see if you’re accurately capturing what the original hardware is doing. As for modern game development, both flashcarts and emulators help give developers new ideas. By allowing them to test out several old retro games, they can take influence from those games and incorporate ideas from them into their own projects. Many game developers have said that if it weren’t for this, many of their ideas wouldn’t have been able to be formed or inspired in a more modern or well designed way.

    There should be a lot of bureaucracy in Nintendo to get access to their own ROM library and old devkits. To me, it isn't weird at all that NERD has used flashcarts, they're in Europe and getting access from games that probably are in Japan could take a long time. Their goal is possibly to finish the emulator as soon as possible, and using unofficial stuff that is already on the web can accelerate that process.

    Game companies who are against piracy often also benefit from hardware and software developed to accomplish it. Games have been ported to steam bearing razor1911 cracked code in the executables to remove old and obsolete drm, developers for N64 games famously often used piracy carts because Nintendo couldn't supply enough devkits and materials, unsupported game mods have been used to influence features in the sequels, etc.

    • @silversonic1
      @silversonic1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Very true. And while using an ezflash would sound unorthodox, Nintendo would likely have needed to make new development tools for a small team to use to make the emulator. Since the ezflash for GBA is still being sold at about $60US, all the team would need are a few of them and some small micro SD cards, not even beyond 4GB, honestly. That saves thousands in R&D and manufacturing to make their own tool to handle the exact same thing.
      Why not use the stuff they already had for GBA development? Long story short, they may not have it anymore and it wasn't the ideal solution due to the outdated technology causing unnecessary time loss due to lack of capacity and transfer speeds.
      And anything NSO honestly seems to be developed on a tighter budget, thus the unfortunate problems cropping up upon first release. You know, like missing fog effects or no option to turn off that control info at the bottom of the screen.
      Sorry. I tend to get rather detailed. Have a wonderful everything.

    About the git change log.
    While it could be very well be legit, if it's just the .git folder without any repo working-dir content for any commit, then it wouldn't be hard to fake.
    One could produce such a .git commit log by making a local repo, with your name and email set in your local git user config (or even at the per-repo config level) to match that of a known (or maybe even made up) Nintendo dev, while having your clock set to a past time (or it could have been done in 2020) and just make various random commits.

    • @r00tyschannel52
      @r00tyschannel52 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well specifically if you have the whole .git folder, you can reproduce the whole repo by just typing git reset --hard. The .git folder contains everything needed to bring the repo back.
      I find accidentally including the .git folder to be oh so suspicious. The reason being that if you make a build from your source, you would likely then send specifically the files needed for runtime, and nothing else. It'd be quite hard to accidentally include the .git folder.
      Unless the contents of the flash were the entire contents of the git repo. In which case, the source would be there too (why would you use a git repo for the binaries only?).
      Seems a bit suspicious to me. Can't comment more though because I've not seen the contents.
      EDIT: Just to add, I know nothing about this emulator, or anything in terms of switch emulators. Only emulation on the PC. So, this comment is purely about the git folder.

      They aren't pirating their own games though. They are using Flash hardware to test their emulators. They own the copyrights to the software so it's not a moral or ethical quandary.

    • @VagrantValmar
      @VagrantValmar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is okay to download what you own though. So it is definitely okay when they do it because they are the legitimate owners of the games.
      But even if that were not the case, this is an employee doing it, not the company as a whole. You think just because someone is a Nintendo (or Sony, Sega, MS, etc) employee that means they automatically stop pirating games?

  • @TsukinoAzura
    @TsukinoAzura 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something interesting that you didn't mention about Sloop is a priority in the games list. Each game had a priority, either A or B, and I can only assume the A priority games would have been on a GBA Online service first with B ones being considered later, or not even included.
    I did manage to install Sloop on my softmodded Switch and something to take note is Sloop does not save SRAM/FLASH/EEPROM Data upon closing the application. So if you saved your game in Zelda, then closed the app and came back, there would be no save data. Sloop doesn't even create sava data on the Switch, and if you attempt to create save states in Sloop, the application crashes.
    Now these could be because of how Sloop was re-compiled with retail keys so it can be installed on a retail system, or it could be because saving is not implemented in the test.
    There are some test scenerios in Sloop that involve running 2 instances of the emulator on the same Switch to do trades (maybe Pokemon?) and some that do link cable over the internet for multiplayer!

    As someone who has done software developer work for companies before, I don't feel that just because there are references to EZFlash and open source tools here that it would invalidate the work being by Nintendo.
    To me, this seems like a proof of concept. I've put together projects before on my own as well as part of a small group that started like that. A big part of it is to show a working prototype to higher ups and to be able to speak to costs and time. Sometimes that requires using tools that may not be completely kosher, but wouldn't influence the project itself beyond the pitch. In a situation like this, Nintendo, especially those who would build a proof of concept, know how passionate the community is about emulation perfection. Using the same tools that the community uses would just be obvious.
    That being said, there is no guarantee that this emulator will make it into NSO. If it is a proof of concept, this could be the foundation, the real thing could be something totally different, or Nintendo may not have even been satisfied if it was used for a project pitch.

    The inclusion of the EZFlash image doesn't neccesarily indicate their internal purchase/use of that brand of flash cart. Using a flash cart or similar device to test on real hardware seems like good move for development, and perhaps the devs just googled for an image to put there and the ez flash popped up first.

    • @joemck85
      @joemck85 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Or maybe they really did use EZFlash. They're still readily available for purchase by anyone and shipment in under a week many places. The official Nintendo GBA flashcarts are at the very least in some box buried in a dusty corner of a warehouse that the NERD team developing this probably didn't have access to.
      ... Or they've recognized that modern EZFlash is a better product than their two decade old dev cartridges. The official flashcarts needed a probably parallel port based device to write a ROM onto them, so you need to find the writer devices, something with a parallel port, and the old software to use it. Or you can just drag your ROM onto an SD card.

    A minor point, but some of the commit messages reference what looks like JIRA issue numbers. This is consistent with Sloop being an internal-only project, as I just can't believe Nintendo uses JIRA for their internal bug-tracking for production games and services. I'd honestly expect them to use an idiosyncratic customized version of bugzilla they've been dragging around since the early 2000s. Besides the issue count (3 digits) is really on the low side for developing an emulator from scratch.

Not saying that they should start publicly telling people it's okay, but simply quit with the façade that they themselves aren't emulating games and using the public's efforts in some ways to improve it; in the last few years, people have been able to datamine and leak a number of things that show quite a bit of hypocrisy between their words and practices, and with the reveal of Sloop to the public it just hammers that point even further.

    This is rather interesting. And I honestly believe that Nintendo is ok with their use of the flash cart, and for good reason. It would be quite expensive to make new hardware to help them compare the emulator's accuracy against the real thing. Since ezflash is one of the cheaper flash cart manufacturers for GBA still being produced, using them seems like a good idea. Besides, I don't know how many people are actually involved in the project. As I don't have details, it could likely just be a handful. It would be rather ridiculous to make brand new testing tools if they aren't necessary.
    And honestly, Nintendo would be fools to scrap the project due to the leak. Game Boy fans are popping up left and right, chatting about how awesome it would be to have games from the entire Game Boy line playable on their Switch. It's essentially hype they didn't have to pay for. If anything, if this was fake or unapproved, it has shown them that there's a market and they need to get on top of it.

    A DS emulator on the switch would be amazing as well, but it would only be decent in portable mode for some games, like WarioWare: Touched. On TV it could work by using the right joystick as a cursor and using either the triggers or the the joystick button to emulate a touch. Perhaps motion controls would even be better, if not too sensitive!

    You're the first youtube that gave me a valid reason for a vpn (regarding the spying stuff not the geoblocking part) in his surf shark ad segment (old unsecured websites). it's great to see that at least some people really understand what they are talking about. subscribed now just because of this

    While this is all interesting, I don't have NSO anymore since I don't use it. Though Golden Sun being on it would be a reason to get it I guess.

    Considering this was dumped from a console it may have been on purpose, sorta like the bar that new Apple devices kept getting "lost" at.

    I tried SurfShark but it didn't work for me. Incredibly slow at busy hours and had trouble downloading files (corrupt files). There are way better options out there.
