I may well be one of the few people alive who actually heard him sing this role, that was Covent Garden in 1939, although he had the Real Otello voice and an incredible range in his voice including shadings and colourings, he was not good in Italian and because of this he could be inaccurate, but his Esultate was one of the greatest you would ever want to hear, it was recorded on his 30 and 31 Otello's at Covent Garden by the BBC, also the 39 two performances were done complete with the BBC, but they were not able to Broadcast because of Copyright, but there are snippets still at large so to with Martinelli from 1937 including his incredible Esultate's from the back of the Stage Melchior did as well, Zenatello did not he did it from the front so to Slezak. His acting even good was not in the same League has his friend Martinelli, neither did he have the Polished Italian of Martinelli but I would say that with Del Monaco those three are the Three Greatest Otelo's that I have heard in my very long and now waning life, it is recordings like these that bring back more than memories, they Uplift your spirit. That's amazing. Thank you for this contemporary report! Melchior's voice is clearly well suited for Otello. My information was that there were no recordings of his Otello. I only know the recordings of the famous arias. There are the 1930 recordings in German, which are the best, and also some later recordings in Italian. I had never heard of the 1939 BBC recordings, I will do some research!
This is not your usual monologue. What this recording does, is it highlights Melchior's amazing mezza voce. The legato singing is marvelous and shows how wonderful an artist Melchior was.
