One of my favorite rabbit holes to dive into. Check out the Hereford Mappa Mundi dates from c1300. It is the largest known medieval world map and is displayed at Hereford Cathedral. I do believe it is a map of Radhanites trade routes. Also you can not over estimate the value of a "lingua franca". Just think of the value of a language that gives you instant access to lodging, translation, travel info, and maybe finance. Thanks for a little dip into an old interest.
