Yeah, you just need to build confidence. My singing is also weak if I'm self-conscious about who can hear me. If I block out those thoughts and just belt it out, then I can sing well.
Everyone tell to me that i have soprano voice, but my problem is i'm a shy girl, i can't relax and focus when i sing high notes. i think i just can sing high notes alone in my bathroom 😄
Karimah Sungkar y’know, I started taking singing lessons now and one thing that I do when I’m not in a comfortable place is close my eyes and just focus on my voice, and the feelings I want to convey through it: feel the music in your body, I guess. That works for me, might or might not work for you but maybe try it out? (a fellow soprano) ;)
Im a guy and my voice is naturally deep, but i can sing soprano really well for some reason. I hit really high notes up to the E. I'm here because I wanna give encouragement to those struggling!! You got this! Just do some body warmups to which, may sound strange but give them a go and see how you do after...yawn to open up your vocals, cough slightly to engage your diaphragm, and do some jumping jacks! :D
I do always tend to darken my sound, it's something that was engraved in my brain, simply the way I was trained. Even though I am not a beginner, this video really helped... anyone can benefit from this video, love it, thank you :]
I started singing metal, I didn't have the darkness and heaviness at first and then I practiced and developed. It's pretty much engrained, but my lighter side has diminished a bit now.
Just realized I sing in an opera voice to my cats. I'm going to make an opera called, "You are such a cute fluffy adorable kitty lemme hug you precious fuzzy wuzzy baby"
In singing classes over a year and I love this lesson. Tell me a lot as starting point and your use of adjectives is so very specifically helpful. Thank you!
Being a singer and currently studying vocal performance (opera) in college, I can tell you that open does not always mean relaxed. I STRUGGLED with soo much jaw tension and part of that was because I grew up watching singers sing like that. The biggest key about reducing jaw tension is the breath support and your core. They are directly related, so if your core isnt working, you have to compensate... which, for me, was my jaw
Freya Casey , maybe that advice is good for light high voices but it's not very good for big low voices. You can see how great singers open their mouth at low and high notes. And if you take a look at Jessie Norman, you'll see how she open her mouth at every note😆
@@thefreyacaseymusic totally agree with that! I've sung many opera roles, and I'm so grateful for this video. There is SO MUCH MISINFORMATION about opera/classical singers because it's in the spotlight now. I'm just so glad you're here! I'm a light lyric coloratura, and I absolutely love creating jaw tension by over extending especially on pure "ah" vowels. It is something I still have to consciously think about. I find more space in my dome and very slightly by opening my jaw a bit more (but the space is mostly above my shelf/cheeks) when I'm warming up from C6 - F6. I find it easier to not create as much space when I'm sing that high and just singing a pure rounded vowel like a laser beam as you said. I think of vowels like golden snitches.: )
What you said is so very true! I couldn’t agree more 💗 I’ve just started Opera and Classical signing and I’m a high soprano. My voice is so similar to yours, it’s very light and bright and I feel like I can literally “fly” on very high notes. I love it! My previous teacher told me I should have darkened my voice, forcing my jaw to open in a very unnatural way and it felt horrible. I’m so happy my new teacher is encouraging me to express myself in the most safe and authentic way, letting my voice be just as it is. She told me exactly what you said in this video ☺️ Thank for sharing your precious experience 🌌🎶💗
I'm so glad I found Freya! Your tips are really helping me and motivating me to do more singing. I'm 26 and haven't took any singing lesson and I do like opera and am enjoying singing (practising) Ave Maria as well as e.g. Adele's songs (1st video of yours I have seen was actually Rolling In The Deep:-) Singing is so fullfilling me, I don't know what I would do withou youtube cos there is literally everything I have ever needed to learn, from piano playing, drums, guitar, singing. Wow... Just a HUGE THANK YOU to you and all people who take their time and do videos like this, so I can really learn something interesting. You are an angel
I can reach difficult high notes but I don't sound that good xD Wtf does that mean ?? Probably nothing oh well (I WISH I COULD SING UGH I LOVE OPERA AND SOPRANO SO MUCH)
I'm a soprano, but I can't really hit notes above the bar. Or I can hit notes up to G#6 (or makes noise), but anything above G5 starts hurting my throat, and they have no vibrato but they're not breathy either. I know I have a lot of tension in my throat, but I just can't seem to get rid of it. And I have been taking voice lessons many years and thought that now is the time to start practicing high notes (I've always been afraid of them) but no matter what I do they sound and feel horrible. I lift my soft palate, I open my jaw, I (try to) relax and open the throat, I try to support more, I sing in the mask, but nothing really works, they're still awful. What's the problem? :((
it sounds like the main thing is when you’re trying to hit those notes, you’re clenching your throat because of the fact that you’re afraid of them and I actually had this same problem which is why I thought I was an alto my whole life (I’m actually a first soprano, go figure). something that worked for me was while singing those high notes, I would squat or shake my hand in front of my face or anything that took my mind off the notes so my vocal cords would relax on their own. just keep doing that until you’re comfortable with them and then to add vibrato you need more breath support and expansion in the diaphragm area. if you’re still taking voice lessons then ask your teacher for more tips because if they’ve been with you for a long time they may know what works best for you
You don't really need to "get good at opera" as you put it to play the part of Christine. That is, at the end of the day, musical theatre. So you need to work on your range if you are not already doing so but don't push your limits until your voice, and you, are ready.
I’m a dedicated choir student who was picked for events etc. I’ve done choir for a few years now, so I have a strong foundation. I have absolutely no idea how I ended up here, but I did. I aim to be a better singer and this is how I’ll do it!! >:DD
My chorus teacher says that if you sit up straight with feet flat on the floor also backs away from the chair it is ok. However, for harder songs, it is better to stand while singing
I mean, considering professional opera singers are laying on their backs while they are dying on stage, I think youll be fine. But definetly try standing when practicing... this way you know how it will feel when you actually perform it
Thank you so much for your explanations. It has been quite a while since I wanted to sing Opera because all of my mother’s side of the family is an Opera singer or has great vocals. I don’t know if you know him but my grandfather is Matteo Manuguerra which was an Opera singer ( he died before I was born ). My grandmother, which had a very powerful link with me through music, died a few months ago and I just feel the need to learn Opera so I will feel closer to my family and to my grandparents :). Again thank you so much for your videos !
i’m an alto and my vocal teacher gave me the piece “caro mio ben”, which i’m hella struggling with - especially since i’m not used to hearing myself sing such high notes in general :’)
This is vague misinformation, I’m an opera singer myself. No offense to this video, I’m saying this out of the love of singing. If any of you are serious about learning how to sing it’s simple. Anyone can do it with hard work and patience! 1) learn how to take a deep breathe on command (like how you do when you’re preparing to fall asleep). Then learn how to exhale (like you’ve taken a big yawn and you’re slowly breathing out. Naturally allow your ribs to relax). 2) You must develop the voice!! Like you develop your biceps. Simply learn to sing everything using the muscle groups you use for talking. First chest muscles (thyroid arytenoid). Then you will be able to learn to lighten that chest voice and sing with Head voice muscles (cricothyroid). Believe me, I’ve learned to sing with the placement technique and it was very harsh and stressful for my voice. Now I sing using these muscle groups and I sound free and in control. 3) Most importantly listen to the right singers, people who didn’t shy away from using their whole voice (dimitrova, Obrastova, del Monaco, ponsella, etc) to get an understanding of how those notes should sound. You should never sound like Kermit the frog, or feel like your have a big poop. Must be learned in this order for optimal results.
I was inspired to learn opera because of Vitas's cover of Skyfall by Adele, but I know that I and no other human being could ever even fathom having a voice like his.
I took classical for a short time. I found out that at the time which was years ago that I'm categorized as a Mezzo soprano, but at the time and I don't know anymore if I can t get to whistle. But back then i could get into whistle a bit.
I have a weird voice! I'm 26 years old and my voice is childlike, mumble-like, LOUD( no volume control!), and I can make a very good Steve Urkle impression! But I STILL WANT TO LEARN OPERA! HOW DO I KNOW WHAT KIND MY VOICE WOULD SOUND GOOD AT AND HOW DO I PRACTICE IF I CAN'T UNDERSTAND IT?
Is there an age limit?? I know that I was born to sing opera, life got in the way, I’ve sung in choruses over the years, but would love to give a lesson or two a go. I just turned 60. 😳😳😳💜❤️
Kate Oliver people’s voices are changing ever so often. So it isn’t abnormal. But always make sure you are practicing BUT with safe technique. Because you can lose that range.
Kate Oliver start off slow. When going up higher you want to use more of the back muscles in your vocal folds and leans than front. You know you’re doing this if it feel light and airy BUT NOT BREATHY. You know you are using too much front muscle if your voice cracks or it feels like you are shouting and pushing. Now you may not know how to use these leans unless you have training so I wouldn’t recommend trying it out the first few weeks of using right techniques. When you go up the scale the high notes should feel lighter and lighter each ascending note.
Kate Oliver and remember always that front muscle is for high notes where front is for low and you should keep you larynx low. There are plenty of safe way of brightening the sound without keeping your larynx relaxed. When making the sound brighter while your larynx is low pretend you’re meowing like a cat then it will get so bright it will sound nasally. Don’t use front muscle though. Feel the brightness in your nose but keep the muscle placement correct and larynx low ALWAYS.
Why is that when im singing in front of my classmate i an go higher than d5 like i can go from d5 to c6 but if there's no one listening to me i can't go higher anymore😣😣😣 (Btw im a countertenor)
I had 1 classical singing lesson, I was told usually darker voice develops with age. This is mine, and is how I see it's supposed to be, female singing opera. Now learning other and all versions. But nothing is better than nice vibrato when relaxed. To overcome so many details to let voice flow.......
Hi. First of all keep up the good work on the videos these are the only ones I've come across that help budding opera singers. I would like to know how much of your advice applies to Tenors especially the upper register tutorials? Thanks Steve
I used to sing in my local opera company. In my question I don't think has anything to do with Sopranos. But I almost died last week and I'm trying to remember what range I was in, as apparently it was quite rare for a man, perhaps even women I'm not sure. May I please ask you for some advice. My comfortable range. Where are use my diaphragm efficiently. Is approximately, mid (well sorry that doesn't help much you don't know what my mid range is lol), range. But I confirm I have access to a high range for a male in the upper registry for a male is where I'm most comfortable. I just want to start singing again. Rediscover the joy and health benefits of music and singing with your vocal instrument. Thankyou. I mean once I learnt proper vocal technique. Had my deviated septum repaired, which gave me access to more air. My voice and control took off like a rocket ship. Lol. Have a nice day. Do you disappear into your music? Do you understand what I'm saying when I say I miss home? But I have a much better description if you're willing to let me message you please. Salut! 😪
Hi I wanted to ask what exercises I can do to improve the timbre of my voice to sound more operatic and with more color?I am a baritone/future tenor(F2 to G4). But my voice doesn't sounds like it fit for opera and I really need some help to change that.
I'm already 23, I stopped singing before I hit my puberty hahaha. I wanted to sing Opera (once I've done this and even mistaken I was an opera singer even though I was just playing). But I don't know if I could sing anymore.
Dear Freya, I have a high voice, but I need to work on my voice technically. I really need good lessons to be able to sing in a large concert choir. ❤ Farzaneh
Can you do videos about developing head voice in different genres/styles (pop, musical theatre, gospel, jazz, and opera)? Also, how to avoid singing in an operatic style all the time accidentally, like when covering a song from a non-opera genre?
My top tips: If you're full on operatic as a general rule, imagine talking the songs instead of singing them! It's a really weird shift, it feels so diminutive, but you will still be heard 😉. Use an accent - deliberately. I'm Irish. I use a slightly exaggerated Irish accent when singing non-classical music. - It's great because the Irish accent naturally lifts the soft pallet / cheeks and accidentally creates the space I need. I'm not saying use an Irish accent if you don't have one! (They're notoriously difficult to pull off) But find something relative to your own accent that helps you. It'll put you in a different frame of mind. And it'll cover up the training to some degree. Oh, and relax!!! Anyone classically trained is usually trying 15 times harder than everyone else!
I cant do proper vibrato for shit at the high notes. It Sounds to me like some Kind of banshee...do you have advice? I have no Problem with vibrato in the lower Range...
I am not a soprano(I'm a 2nd soprano) but love your name, my middle name is the same as your first name just different spelling and a lot people call me by my middle name :)

My goal is to be Christine Daaé on broadway or a national tour or even a professional production one day!
Why is that when im singing in front of my classmate i an go higher than d5 like i can go from d5 to c6 but if there's no one listening to me i can't go higher anymore😣😣😣
(Btw im a countertenor)
Im looking for a video for tenor or baritone do you reccomend one? thank you very much
I had 1 classical singing lesson, I was told usually darker voice develops with age. This is mine, and is how I see it's supposed to be, female singing opera. Now learning other and all versions. But nothing is better than nice vibrato when relaxed. To overcome so many details to let voice flow.......
Again, we amateurs have NO IDEA what the larynx OR the pharynx. Show a PICTURE. Many coaches talk about it but don’t show it. Love you!
Im a contralto.
:( Cant do these birdy squeaky high notes.
That's not all that matters
Oh but you can do those beautiful earthy deep tones... I'm a true true fan of those!
Can someone explain to my why I sound like kermit the frog when I sing pop songs but like Maria callas when I sing opera????
Gosh her voice , lovely

thanks for the tips! Your voice is beautiful!
Hi. First of all keep up the good work on the videos these are the only ones I've come across that help budding opera singers. I would like to know how much of your advice applies to Tenors especially the upper register tutorials? Thanks Steve
Im brazilian in love with ur videos! I also follow Natalia Aurea! Keep doing this amazing musical contribution for us!
Hi Freya, just 'discovered' your channel last week, it's very interesting! Thanks for all the work you put into it.
I am Soprano 2. So much help for my voice, I love it appreciate ❤
“Cause I’m a high soprano” hair flip*
I'm already 23, I stopped singing before I hit my puberty hahaha. I wanted to sing Opera (once I've done this and even mistaken I was an opera singer even though I was just playing). But I don't know if I could sing anymore.
Min Luv Why can’t you sing anymore?
@@christinafurlow6815 I focus too much on my studies. =( I wanted to sing again, but I don't think I could anymore, because of my age.
How much of this applies to mezzo singers? Do you have a series of videos for mezzo too?
I have never been able to do that thing with the tongue getting into that V shape )
back from penthouse :D
I was just watching penthouse
Dear Freya, I have a high voice, but I need to work on my voice technically. I really need good lessons to be able to sing in a large concert choir. ❤ Farzaneh
Can you do videos about developing head voice in different genres/styles (pop, musical theatre, gospel, jazz, and opera)? Also, how to avoid singing in an operatic style all the time accidentally, like when covering a song from a non-opera genre?
My top tips:
If you're full on operatic as a general rule, imagine talking the songs instead of singing them!
Wooo ... no idea why I typed in opera tutorial at 7 am in the morning on a holiday...but the 5 mins
Any place know where there’s cheap opera lessons ? I want to learn opera without paying so much
Beautiful Voice!👏👏👏👏👏👏
I don't even know how to sing with vibrato, I've no idea why I'm here but listening to her is relaxing for some reason.
I loved this. Thank you.
I cant do proper vibrato for shit at the high notes. It Sounds to me like some Kind of banshee...do you have advice? I have no Problem with vibrato in the lower Range...
Yes I recognise that I have great voice after singing Opera and now I don't know how to start ,or how to learn 😭😭😂plz help!!
