Was just listening to this while I was doing housework, and realised one of the things I love about WW84 is it doesn't judge any of the characters for wishing on the Dreamstone. We know, as an audience, things are wrong because Diana's powers are draining and that man ISN'T Steve in reality, and we know Barbara loses herself and mourn that loss from the lovable character we're introduced to. We know something's *off* but the film refrains from shaking its finger at any of the characters. It's refreshing and, arguably, realistic. The Dreamstone is pretty benign, but once we see things start going skew-whiff we're invested because we love these characters and don't want anything bad to happen to them, including the antagonist. Never once are we given any reason to hate Maxwell. We certainly don't like him, but he truly is flawed and chasing the wrong path - and that's what this whole movie is about: chasing the wrong path. The path that allures but makes you lose yourself. As someone who's had a four month depression since the year started, that's powerful shit. Because Diana came back and gave up the one thing in the world she wanted because that's what she does, that's who she is. Honest to end even if it means she loses who she loves, because in reality she still has humanity and something to fight for instead of a man. It's okay for her to love Steve all these decades later; we continue loving people we lose. She doesn't define herself by her love for Steve...UNTIL WW84 when she comes under the spell of the Dreamstone. It's perfect. It's a perfect movie.
